Course de Solidarnosc - Stage 2
Vien
Course de Solidarnosc – Stage 2

It's day two or the Course de Solidarnosc and it's unsurprisingly another day for the sprinters. Today's one is even longer: 232,9 kilometers. It also features the first KoM sprint which may get quite popular for the many teams who want to squeeze out every little point in the later part of the season.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh starts the stage as leader – can he keep it up? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen are still his main competitors, but both bombed yesterday. Will be interesting to see if they try any other tactics today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0015.jpg

The stage starts off with a single rider trying to break away – pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Hristov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Amanuel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vandewalle join him a bit later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0017.jpg

And that's it: These three are the break of the day! Then it's obviously important to spectate the KoM sprint. But before that, some uproar in the peloton: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Guillén gets a puncture. He gets back into the pack quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0018.jpg

Anyway, the KoM sprint was won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Amanuel! He was the strongest puncheur on paper, started the sprint a bit late but won it with ease. That'll be a nice jersey for him tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0019.jpg

Time for the finale then. The three riders almost had 10 minutes, but nothing is left of that with one lap (10km) to go: 21 seconds. Delvaux is doing most of the chasing work, which is different from yesterday. Seems like they want to make absolutely sure they start the sprint in a good position today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0020.jpg

And indeed they have a leadout at 3 kilometers from the finish line, together with Rothaus. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh is alone but should be pleased with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri's wheel. An overview:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Guillén

Manninen is present today as well it seems.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0021.jpg

1000 meters to go, and we can see that Guarnier has to do it all alone while Van Heerden is still in Coutinho's wheel! Salleh and Manninen are still in with a chance, too. Others seems to have to go for a top 5 at most.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0022.jpg

200 meters. Guarnier seems to be hanging on? Or can any of the trio Salleh – Manninen – Van Heerden still pass him?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0023.jpg

Hell no! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri is the winner of the second stage of the Course du Solidarnosc! A nice comeback for him after this terrible stage 1. Now it's up to him to keep this up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Van Heerden, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Guillén complete the top 5 in that order.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0024.jpg

Vanoverschelde, Carsi, Vanderaerden, Matthews and Coutinho finish 6th-10th. Bummer for Matthews escpecially, who had a strong showing in stage 1.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0025.jpg

There was a small gap after the #14... But no time gaps were given. This looked scary though, the riders who want a top-15 spot will have to be extra on their guard in the next stages!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0026.jpg

So.. Let's start off with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri on the top step of the podium. I'm sure he hopes this won't be the only time this week.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0027.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh still quite comfortably holds the GC lead though, being the most consistent rider. He's followed by Van Heerden and Guillén.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0028.jpg

And as announced, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Amanuel gets on the podium as the proud owner of the KoM jersey!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0029.jpg

And lastly, no young sprinter did well today meaning that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Yamamoto still has the U25 jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/2/PCM0030.jpg

And that's all for now! Stage 2 was a lot different than stage 1, but there are still a large number of riders looking to improve themselves and challenge Salleh for the race win. Will we get any shakeups tomorrow? We'll have to wait and see!
