Ten long days, but tomorrow we finally have a rest day. Beforehand, we are riding a tough mountain stage to the Apex Mountain Resort. The last stage in Canada, we will resume in the States in two days.
Many KoM sprints in the early part of the race, so the break contains many KoM contenders:
Mendes (1st, 41 pts)
Riesebeek (2nd, 30 pts)
Magnusson (12th, 12 pts)
Feng (14th, 11 pts)
Le Court (20th, 8 pts)
Wallays (21st, 8 pts)
Quispe
Vermeulen
Over the first four climbs of the day, one third and three fourth categories, Riesebeek grabs the most points and is now just one point behind Mendes in the standings. Magnusson also very active, finishing second on nearly all climbs and moving himself towards the top of the rankings.
And on the fifth categorized climb of the day, Riesebeek wins again to overtake Mendes in the virtual classification. The gap to the peloton got to a maximum of six minutes, but is now down to four with 115 kilometers to go. Azteca leading the way.
Riesebeek attacks on the category one climb Fairview Road, and goes across the top first to increase his lead by another sixteen points. Magnusson and Feng are the only other members of the now former breakaway to avoid being caught by the peloton on the climb. Still the gap to Riesebeek is three minutes, so he went up the mountain quite fast.
Four riders attack ahead of the final climb:
Medvedev
Ivanov
Ockeloen
Rojas Villegas
The quartet joined the trio to create a new lead group of seven, but the Azteca train rolls on and caught them with 20 kilometers to go on Green Mountain Road, the prelude to the final climb. Stetina and Mannion lead the way for Eastman, saving Squire for later. De Vos in fifteenth the highest ranked rider dropped, the Canadian in danger of losing his white jersey on the last day in Canada.
Yates and Atapuma attack at 10.5 kilometers, De Marchi not strong enough to follow. Has Suaza lost leadership after his horrible performance yesterday, and is the team putting its money behind Atapuma now?
Eastman himself closes the gap, bringing Valls, Talansky and Berhane with him. The riders behind would also close the gap, resulting in a regroup six kilometers from the top.
Atapuma trying again, now Pozzo leading the chase for Valls, as the Azteca train is catching breath.
Old friend Yates joining him, then Valls makes the jump. Anacona, Khripta and Eastman following next, followed by Talansky and Berhane. Suaza at the back of the group.
Valls spots Eastman coming and attacks again, Yates able to follow the Spaniard. Eastman left Khripta and Anacona behind, but they are still ahead of the group Talansky/Berhane, which is already a minute behind Valls.
The four leaders get together at the top of the climb. The final 1500 meters are downhill, thus likely a sprint between these four.
Eastman and Valls those with the most energy left, Atapuma too tired to even sprint.
Ryan Eastman wins in the yellow jersey at Apex Mountain Resort! Valls second, then a gap of seven seconds to Yates and fifteen to Atapuma. Eastman with bonus seconds now 1'19 ahead of Yates and 1'23 ahead of Valls.
Khripta fifth, Anacona sixth at 1'19. Good rides from them.
Claerebout wins the sprint for seventh ahead of Mannion, Pozzo and Koshevoy. A very large group at 1'47 actually, containing Talansky, Berhane and Suaza. Talansky loses his third place in the GC to Valls. Berhane, Anacona, Affonso and Atapuma fifth to eight with just thirteen seconds between them.
De Vos managed to come back to this group, thus saving his youth jersey as we leave Canada. We will return to the country for stage 15, when we finish at Red Mountain Resort, but for now the riders will enjoy a rest day and fly to Billings, Montana, where we continue the race with another mountain stage.
