Course de Solidarnosc - Stage 1
Vien
Course de Solidarnosc – Stage 1

The Course de Solidarnosc starts off with almost 224 kilometres from Gdansk to Bydgoscz. Thankfully I don't have to prounounce that. It's flat at first but offers some hills near the end, as per usual in this race. It'll give a good indication of which rider will end this race on the final GC podium.

Behind top favourite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri, who finally wants to turn his wage into a lot of points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Van Heerden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh are regarded as his biggest competitors. Though especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Keukeleire think they can win this, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Yechezkel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Bonnamour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Waersted open the race and are the first ones to create a gap over the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/1/PCM0002.jpg

They don't make it, though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Yechezkel tries again and gets pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Blekevicius, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Soulious and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vandewalle with him. Interesting tactics from the Israeli rider, who has a great sprinter in Manninen in his team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/1/PCM0003.jpg

Third time's the charm for him, though. The break of the day consists of the following riders:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Yechezkel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Yamamoto
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Amanuel
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Van der Ploeg

3 minutes with 155 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/1/PCM0004.jpg

Sauber and Rothaus are the most present chasers, and close the gap to a minute with 20 kilometers to go. 'Looks like we're getting a mass sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/1/PCM0005.jpg

It's not over though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Van der Ploeg accelerates from the break and is still 27 seconds ahead with 6 kilometers to go! This will disrupt the sprint trains for sure.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/1/PCM0006.jpg

GCN takes over the charge and the peloton is complete again with 4 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/1/PCM0007.jpg

2 kilometers left. Sauber have the inside corner, and is putting pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh into a great position! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Keukeleire's train, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Matthews and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Guillén in their wheel, are doing fine, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Van Heerden are further behind and have to find a gap!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/1/PCM0008.jpg

We're almost under the red kite and the situation looks like this:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png McLaypcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Manan
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Keukeleirepcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Coutinhopcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Matthews
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Guillén
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Doull

Seems like Coutinho is sprinting instead of Van Heerden. All the other sprinters have to move up quickly...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/1/PCM0009.jpg

Salleh moves onwards, while Keukeleire falls back a little. It seems like this will be Salleh vs Matthews with 500 meters to go. Who will win this?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/1/PCM0010.jpg

It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh! The Malaysian rider was part of one of the two smartest teams who had a train and was able to finish it off. What a great start for him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Matthews and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Guillén finish the top 3 and set a good result, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/1/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Van Heerden (after all) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Keukeleire finish the top 5. Vanoverschelde, Carsi, Angarita, a very disappointing Manninen and Vanderaerden also get one or more bonification seconds.

However, the biggest disappointment is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri in 11th. Delvaux couldn't create a train and Guarnieri coduln't seem to improvise...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/1/PCM0012.jpg

So let's enjoy the celebration of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/1/PCM0013.jpg

While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Yamamoto earns himself the U25 jersey with the help of the intermediate sprints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/1/PCM0014.jpg

That's all for today. Time for the biggest favourites to rethink their strategy. We'll see if they can do better tomorrow!
