Heistse Pijl
A broad type of riders have moved to Belgium for the start of the Heistse Pijl. And almost all riders will have something to do there. Either try will try to break away, or help their cobbler or sprinter. As both of those rider types have a change of winning today!
If we have to believe the bookies' AI though (which is an intense algorythm at times!), this 199,0 kilometer race will be one for the cobblers. Zhupa, Ferreira and Jacobs get mentioned as the biggest favourites. No sprinters made the cut on this list.
First attack of the day by Resell, Andersson and Wallays.
Four riders try to follow them:
Verbist ( a very dangerous cobbler!)
Yechezkel
Meiler
and Gallego Martin.
They get caught quite quickly. Too dangerous to let them go, I guess. So the three man in the break today will be Resell, Andersson and Wallays.
3 minutes with 168 kilometers to go.
As we reach the first cobbles, we can see that many teams are trying to control the pace. Rothaus (with Bain) seem to be the most agressive chasers.
Rothaus did a great job at chasing. The breakaway gets caught with 20 kilometers to go. Meanwhile, the peloton is still intact. When will the first attacks come?
After the second last cobbled section the peloton splits into two. Though not a single manager should be worried. Every sprinter is still in the main, 87-rider bunch.
And it seems like it will stay this way. Led by Rothaus, with some work by GCN too, we have seen no attacks under the 5km-border. Interesting to note is that Guillén is in 4th pace here, showing we're very likely to see a sprinter take this win!
1,8 kilometers to go and we can see that not a single train has been formed. We're onto the final cobbled section of the race, and the sprint is very likely to start soon. In good positions are Zhupa, Jacobs, King, Tewelde, Ferreira, Guillén, Drucker, Salleh... Actually too many to mention but it's all about the rider who can find a gap and time his jump perfectly!
And this gap has been found by King, who has Tewelde in his wheel!
700 meters to go and look at the gap these two have to Salleh! Will anyone even be able to get close, or will these two fight for victory?
Nah, it's between these two! King is still in front but Tewelde is doing his move with 300 meters to go...
And passes him! Amateur rider Tewelde is the winner of the Heistse Pijl! What a shocker!
King has to settle for second. A bit of sour taste there probably, but he would've been happy with that before the race.
Behind them, we can see that Korzh became the best of the rest, another surprise. Manninen, Salleh and Keukeleire are more predictable names in fourth, fifth and sixth.
Drucker and Guillén finish 7th and 8th. Followed by three cobblers: Jacobs, Ferreira and Zhupa.
Time for the podium then. We can see that Tewelde has changed his tan a bit and is enjoying his victory. Congratulations!
And with that we have to conclude today's race. I never thought the result could've been more unpredictable than this was looking to be already. But I guess that's the charm of C2 races in general, right? Anyway, see you soon for more late-season racing.
