After yesterday's mass sprint, the bookmakers got their brains back and predict another sprint for this third stage from Red Deer to Calgary.
Marin the only survivor of an early flight, taking the points but more importantly seconds at the intermediate sprint. Behind him, Nelson and Haller take the remaining seconds, with GC leader Keough in fourth.
A gap occurred between the riders who participated in the sprint and the teams which didn't. This results in a group of twenty having a gap of three minutes at the moment, without any signs of holding the legs still so they can be caught. Here are the names:
Bain, Hochmann, Mendes, Minnard, Mollema, Ockeloen, Van Heerden
Haller, Irvine, Park, Walsleben
Bridges, Le Court, Nelson
Keough
Marin
Matthews
Meyer
Nizzolo
Tzortzakis
Rothaus obviously the team setting the pace, with seven out of eight riders in their squad in the first group ( Markus the omission). Kraftwerk and Podium Ambition also have some workers with them. Sprinters missing the boat by not participating for the first intermediate sprint are Castañeda and Colbrelli. No signs of an organized chase in that group.
It got much worse for the teams behind, as the gap extended to seven minutes within no time! Ayubowan and Kulczyk (despite having one rider in the front group) are aware of the gravity of the situation and start chasing.
Keough wins the second intermediate sprint ahead of Nelson and Meyer. The group still leads by 4 minutes with 80 kilometers to go, but the gap has gone down a bit as the Rothaus riders get tired.
Down to 2'30 at 35. Matthews wins the final intermediate sprint, with Keough and Meyer picking up bonus seconds as well.
Ayubowan and Kulczyk are trying their absolute best, but they can't get the gap under two minutes and there are only ten kilometers remaining. Rothaus giving everything with their excess riders.
Minnard - Hochmann - Van Heerden the Rothaus train, Walsleben - Park - Haller the Kraftwerk train, Le Court - Bridges - Nelson the Podium Ambition train, the others positioning behind one of them. Irvine fakes an attack on the right, with Bain following him. The other Rothaus helpers and lucky escapee Marin are dropped, Keough struggling at the back of the leaders!
Kraftwerk wins from Rothaus, while the Podium Ambition train including Meyer loses serious ground. Matthews, Nizzolo and Tzortzakis behind Van Heerden. Irvine and Bain did not get a gap.
Same scenario as yesterday, Park giving Haller a great tow but can the Austrian finish it off today? Hochmann again the best Rothaus sprinter in the dysfunctional train, having the edge over Van Heerden. Nelson and Keough completely out of the picture.
The leadout works this time. Marco Haller wins in Calgary in a stage which will be remembered as "weird". Hochmann and Van Heerden finish second and fourth, bad use of the situation by Rothaus. Matthews third, Meyer fifth, Nizzolo sixth, Tzortzakis eight, Nelson tenth.
Keough twelfth, still in the same time but not enough bonus seconds to remain leader, that honor goes to Haller as well.
Marin 15th at 40 seconds, which makes him the best young rider of the day and also overall.
The gap to the second group got up to nearly four minutes. Boev won the sprint for 21st ahead of Cisse and Castañeda. Luckily for them the front group did not contain major names for the overall victory. These twenty riders now also form the GC top twenty, which will likely stay this way until the first time trial with this gap.
