The second stage is one for the sprinters, from Edmonton to Lacombe without any major obstacle. With the field very close together and the winner receiving twenty bonus seconds, anyone can take the leader's jersey from Hamza.
The bookmakers disagree though, listing puncheurs as top favorites. I'm not so sure...
There were two breakaway attempts, containing four riders each, but Azteca brought them back each time. Why? An early intermediate sprint, with 6, 4 and 2 bonus seconds. The third attempt consists of only Wallays, and he is allowed to go. No one would join him, so he sets off on a adventure in solitude.
Wallays thus takes the six seconds bonifications at the first intermediate sprint. Keough takes four seconds, Nelson two, so the former is now the virtual leader as he only needed one second. Haller and Matthews lose out this time.
Keough does not settle there, as he goes for four seconds at the second sprint, with Meyer taking two and Colbrelli coming just short.
And the final intermediate goes to Meyer ahead of Nelson, with nearly every sprinter participating. So Keough takes eight bonus second today, Meyer six, Nelson four. Twenty, twelve and eight seconds remaining for the top three on the stage.
You'd almost forget Wallays, who has now taken eighteen by winning all three. This means he's now just behind Keough in virtual second place.
The Belgian was caught at 10 kilometers from the line, due to the work of Kraftwerk, Podium Ambition and Rothaus. These teams are also setting up sprint trains.
Rothaus looks to have the best train going into the final three kilometers: Ockeloen, Markus, Hochmann, Van Heerden, with Nelson dropping in behind them. Kraftwerk comes to the forefront with Terasaki, Park and Haller, with Matthews and Keough in their slipstream. Ayubowan putting a lot of faith in Tharuka and Silva. Meyer, Nizzolo and Castañeda are far back surprisingly.
Podium Ambition forms a train after all with Robov and Bridges guiding Nelson towards the line, but they are behind the other two trains, with Kraftwerk having a slight edge over Rothaus. Juarez will participate in the sprint instead of Castañeda, while Meyer did find his way forward. Keough on the other hand is losing ground, maybe spending too much energy on the earlier sprints.
Park perfectly launches Haller into the final kilometer. Morales behind them but without Colbrelli. Hochmann leads the sprint on the left side, having lost Van Heerden. Meyer, Juarez and Matthews are following, while Nelson's leadout has derailed, resulting in a even bigger deficit. Nizzolo moving up a few places.
Haller can't seem to get past Park at 500. Matthews draws alongside Hochmann, with Meyer also in the mix.
Michael Matthews with the strongest sprint in the end to win the second stage in Lacombe. Haller second, Hochmann third, Park holding on to fourth, Nizzolo with a strong finish for fifth. Meyer, Keough, Nelson, Markus and Van Heerden complete the top ten.
The trio who received bonus seconds were amongst the worst in the prologue, and did not pick up bonus seconds elsewhere, so Luke Keough becomes the new race leader, with Meyer, Haller and Matthews at five seconds. Wallays was one of the few riders who lost touch with the peloton in the end, so his solo was all in vain.
