Spoiler I haven't played PCM for about 8 years (except a very short spell in 2015 when I won PCM15 on a contest here on Daily). I bought PCM18 for this year's steam summer sale and I will be looking to see if I still enjoy playing the game. And since I'll be playing, I figured a story would be fitting as well. Since I don't have a lot of free time I won't be doing very detailed reports with stage races coming with one report per race and not per stage. If I get that far, I hope I can do stage by stage for Grand Tours.
I'll be using the RSM/PCMdaily 2019DB.

One of George Bennett's objectives this season comes early with the Tour Down Under so he isn't in a bad shape at this point in the season, which was highlighted by coming third in the time - trial.
In the road race, the race went rather uneventful in the first part, with a group of 5 riders making a move with about 100km to go, including EF1's Tom Scully and George Bennett. The Jumbo rider was clearly the strongest rider in the group and with 30km left before the finish line he attacked his breakaway companions as neither of them had a lot left in the tank.

The riders in the pack waited too long to start the actual racing, with Bevin making the most important move with 10km to go, but at that point Bennett had more than 3 minutes in front of them and it was clear that they will be needing a miracle to catch Bennett. The miracle didn't happen and Bennett was first to cross the finish line.

On paper, Elia Viviani was the strongest sprinter in the Down Under race. And he did not disappoint. The Italian champion won all 3 stages that ended in a mass sprint. Our sprinter, Danny Van Poppel finished in the top 10 in all of them, with a highlight in the second stage where he even reached the podium.

With the first, second and fifth stage ending in mass sprints, the puncheurs had the other 3 stages to show what they are made of. But unlike Viviani's, their plans didn't go as planned as in the third stage with 15km before the finish line Robert Gesink crashed and brought down with him most of the leading group of 30 riders. Five riders were able to survive the crash: Tony Gallopin, George Bennet, Paul Martens, Michael Woods and Sep Vanmarcke.
Gallopin even managed to get a gap to the other four and he rode alone to the finish line to claim the stage win and the leader's jersey, finishing with an advantage of 22 seconds in front of Bennett and 1'48 in front of the main group. The other 3 riders that survived the crash were eventually caught by the group behind.

In the fourth stage only about 40 riders survived the final climb but with a downhill before the finish line we saw no gaps between the favorites. Gesink and Eenkhoorn tried to set up Bennet for a sprint, but Caleb Ewan who had managed to survive the climb took the win, with Bennet in second place and gaining 6 seconds on Gallopin.
With the crash from stage 3 having caused such a big gap between Gallopin and Bennett and the rest of the favorites, it was clear that it will be a battle between the two on Willunga Hill in the last stage for the overall win.
Inside the last 3 kilometers a group of 8 riders created a small gap to others: Fuglsang, Valgren, Stuyven Izagirre, Nibali, Woods, Rui Costa and George Bennett. This was great news for the fresh Kiwi champion as Gallopin had failed to make the move. The move which would prove to be the winning one in the end.
In the final kilometer, Bennett proved to have the strongest legs as he sprinted for the stage win on the last corner of the race. With Galloping's group finishing 14 seconds behind, Bennett had done enough to take the overall victory as well.

Elia Viviani, Caleb Ewan and Fernando Gaviria were the biggest sprinters at the Santos Tour Down Under. However, none of them will be taking part in today's race, making their team-mates in Alvaro Hodeg, Tosh van der Sance and Simone Consonni and the biggest favorites of the day.
Despite some very fearless attempts to trick the peloton for all of the last 30km, the race headed towards a mass sprint. UAE controlled the sprint and put Consonni in a perfect position to claim the victory. He was followed by Mezgec and Hodeg, with Jumbo's Danny Van Poppel taking fourth.

Dylan Groenewegen's first race of the season had two sprint opportunities, in the first and the last stage of the race. After a fantastic team effort in the first stage, Dylan delivered his first win of the season in his very first race. Things didn't go as smooth in the last stage though and with Roosen and Jansen not being able to follow the pack on the last climb of the day, Groenewegen's train was not as strong and he only finished third behind Bauhaus and Ewan.

The second stage of the race brought us a sprint between the GC favorites with Dan Martin taking the stage in front of Salvatore Puccio.
Puccio would take over the leader's jersey the next day when Ineos finished second in the team time - trial, one second behind our very own Jumbo Visma. The team's performance put Gesink into second overall.

The fourth stage of the race was the only one with an uphill finish. Ineos controlled the pack on the entire climb, setting up Poels and Thomas for the final sprint. Still, neither of them was as fast as Rigoberto Uran, who was first over the finish line.

Woet Poels finished second to take over the lead of the race and eventually the final overall rankings. Gesink finished in a group which lost 30 seconds to the leading trio, which dropped the Dutchman to 5th overall.

Dylan Groenewegen took advantage of a rather weak start list in term of sprinters in Portugal and with a fantastic train to lead him out, the Dutchman was first to cross the finish line in three stages of the race.

The wind in the second stage allowed a small group of riders, including our sprint train, to create a gap to the rest of the pack. The time gain helped Tony Martin move into the overall lead after the third stage, the only stage with an uphill finish.
However, Tony Martin didn't have a great day in the time - trial and surprisingly lost the lead of the race and further time lost in the final stage saw him drop out of the top 20. Martin having a bad day in the time - trial wasn't the only surprise of the race though as it was Fabio Aru who produced a very good time thanks to the climb in the first half of the stage and took the stage win and overall win.

After a rather easy start of the race which saw Geraint Thomas move into the lead after the third stage, Valverde went hard on the attack on the last two stages. After a spectacular ride in the fourth stage and despite being in the race lead, Alejandro destroyed the competition on the final stage crossing the line with more than 2 minutes advantage over Daryl Impey, who came in second and almost 3 minutes on G.

Jumbo's race wasn't very exciting with Steven Kruiswijk managing to grab a top 10 place in the overall rankings, while the highlight came from the white jersey won by Sepp Kuss.

Jumbo-Visma came in third in the opening TTT
All of the three flat stages designed for sprinters were quite haotic with only 2 of them ending with a mass sprint. Fernando Gaviria won one, while Max took the other.
The important things started with the third stage when Esteban Chaves and Jesus Herrada proved to be the strongest guys of the day. Chaves crossed the finish line first, while Herrada took over the overall lead. Jesus Herrada was in top shape in the next stage as well as he and his brother broke away from the other favorites in the last kilometer. Exteding the overall lead wasn't enough for Jesus though as he took the stage win as well instead of gifting it to his brother.
All in the family
Pretty much everyone was expecting Herada to crack in the queen stage, but the Spaniard's fantastic shaped was once again highlighted as he took another stage win and secured the overall win in a World Tour race, a terrific feat for Cofidis.

Roglic managed to finish third overall mostly due to the opening TTT and the third stage where even though he wasn't able to keep up with the leading duo he was still able to put time between himself and the others. Powless also enjoyed a very good race until the climb up to Jebel Jais in the 6th stage where he slipped out of the top and with it lost the lead in the white jersey classification as well.

There weren't a lot of big names at the start line in Gent which put all eyes on Wout Van Aert and Jumbo-Visma. And the team did a very fine job controlling the race and the breakaway up and until Muur-Kapelmuur where a massive crash which also involved Wout Van Aert blocked a good part of the peloton.

Following the chaos from the Muur, two riders, Ian Stannard and Nelson Oliveira, went clear from the rest of the crash survivors. Behind them a group of four riders formed with 2 from CCC (Guillaume Van Keirsbulck and Michael Schar) and 2 from Jumbo-Visma (Danny Van Poppel and Amund Jansen). The group behind worked really good together and eventually caught up to the leading duo.

Jansen put in huge turns, knowing that cathing the riders at the front would put Van Poppel in a great position to take home the win, and as a result he couldn't keep up with the rest in the closing kilometers. Still, even withouth Jansen Van Poppel was a huge favorite as he was by far the best sprinter in the group and that was shown in the final hundred of meters.
But Van Poppel was too sure of his power and decided to raise his hands way before the finish line which resulted in both him and the team missing out on a huge win as Schar throw his bike over the line and got the best of him.

Despite a lot of early crashes in the race which saw our very own Timo Roosen out with a broken hand and some attack attempts in the last kilometer, the race headed to a mass sprint.

Even without Roosen the team did a fantastic job to put Groenewegen in a perfect position. But Dyland launched his sprint from Van Poppel's wheel too late and only finished second, behind Caleb Ewan.

De Tier, Van Aert and De Plus enjoying the white roads
Kwiatkowski, Valgren, Impey and Jesus Herrada all tried in multiple attempts to break away from the pack but all of their moves failed which saw the winner being decided in a sprint with a rather larger group at the front.
As soon as he saw the cobblestones in the last kilometer, Van Aert felt at home and he moved to the front of the pack in an attempt to anticipate the final sprint.

It wasn't the best move though as he was not able to keep up the rythm and he was eventually overtook by the riders behind him.
It was Kwiatkowski who proved to be the strongest in the end, taking the win in front of Calmejane and Herrada. Jesus Herrada with another amazing result this season.

Dylan Groenewegen continued his series of wins with 2 stages in Paris - Nice out of the four opportunities for sprinters. One stage went to the breakaway while the other other went to Sony Colbrelli.
It was win clear as day for Groenewegen in the first stage
Colbrelli did more than just compete in sprints though as it the fourth stage he was able to go side by side with the GC riders, claiming the stage win in front of Jakob Fuglsang and Tim Wellens, who were happy to put time between themselves and the other GC favorites.

The battle for the GC would continue with the stage 5 time - trial which saw Geraint Thomas come up on top, with Fuglsang moving into the overall lead. Fuglsang didn't have a great day on the queen stage though and as a result he slipped off the podium.
Simon Yates, Vincenzo Nibali, Richard Carapaz and Rui Costa were the strongest, with the last two stealing the show in the final kilometers of the climb. Costa's legs proved to be fresher than Carapaz' and he sprinted away from the Movistar rider to take the win and the yellow jersey, which he would have no problem defending in the last stage.

George Bennet couldn't find his legs in France and was only a shadows of the rider who surprised everyone in the early season in January. With him not being able to ride for the general classification, it was Robert Gesink who brought the team another top 10 in a World Tour race this season.

The fastest team in the opening TTT
There were only two opportunities for sprinters in Italy and both were claimed by Pascal Ackermann. The German champion was clearly the fastest man in the pack and having the former World Champion, Peter Sagan in his train made it mission impossible for other sprinters.
Stellar lead out of Pascal Ackerman
Stages 4 and 5 had the hardest profiles in the race and they proved to be the most decisive. In the fourth stage, Kwiatkowski, Tom Dumoulin and Lutsenko were a head above every one else in the competition, while in the fifth stage we saw larger group make it to the finish together. Both stages were won by Kwiatek who claimed the overall rankings as well.

The TTT was a perfect set up for our riders to ride a good GC here, but with Roglic failing to follow the strongest trio in the fourth stage he was not able to get into the final overall podium. Laurens De Plus had his best race of the season so far being in the top 5 until the final time - trial, where he lost a place to Rohan Dennis.
