A lovely day for cycling here in the early autumn of Finland. Bright sunshine greets our riders as we're flagged off for the first time in this race.
The first attack goes off early and the peloton doesn't bother chasing it down. No one else makes a move and this is our breakaway for the day:
Rabitsch
Girdlestone
Valio, Delvaux, Banco de Bogota and Sauber controlling the pack but not necessarily showing any urgency yet.
100 km to go for the break and their lead stands at 5'53". Rothaus and ENI-MOL have come to the front of the pack now too.
50 km to go. The peloton is still all together as they bring down the break's advantage to 2'50".
Van Poppel and Losch attack out of the pack with 34 km left. They don't survive for too long off the front.
We jump to 13 km to go as the break is caught. The peloton is still together, but the pace at the front has drawn them out.
33 riders are dropped! Kreder and Aregger are the two big names in this group.
Sakala attacks with 6 km to go hoping to Time Trial his way to the finish.
He gets daylight to the peloton but can only hang on for 3 kilometers before getting caught. Wippert and Liepins with the bulk of the work to chase him down.
There is a split of 12 riders at the front, with Sakala stuck in no man's land between E1 and the pack. Here's the situation in the front group:
Vanoverschelde Hochmann Keogh Brus Vinther Tewelde Salleh Manninen Carsi Guarnieri Van Heerden Wippert Liepins
Past the last corner and its Liepens - Wippert - Van Heerden at the front with Manninen and Guarnieri behind. 1200 meters.
Not an ideal leadout for Valio, with home favourite Manninen not in touch with Liepins, but maybe he will get a tow later on.
800 meters. Manninen with a huge burst of speed in the last 400 meters to catch up to his teammate. Perhaps he'd be better off in his slipstream?
600 meters to go and Liepins has run out of gas.
Manninen leads to wild cheers but Guarnieri and Carsi are closing quick.
Just a 100 meters later and Guarnieri is past Manninen. Salleh with a rapid sprint closing in on the leaders.
Now Carsi goes past Manninen on the other side of Guarnieri in a move which reminds me of the famous Hakinnen overtake on Schumacher, while lapping Zonta, at Spa Francorchamps in 2000!
Salleh also past the Valio sprinter now, who's rapidly going backwards. 200 meters left.
Salleh has nearly drawn level with Carsi with a 100 meters remaining.
No problems for Guarnieri though as he takes a rare win this season. Great powerful sprint from the top favourite.
Carsi just hangs on to 2nd place ahead of Salleh. 5 more meters and the result would've been reversed!
Manninen hangs on to 4th place in his and his team's home race, ahead of Keogh and Brus. So close for Valio to a dream result at home, but wasn't to be.
Van Heerden claims 7th ahead of Tewelde with a tired Liepins in 9th.
Vanoverschelde completes the Top 10, fastest from the pack.
