Deutschland Tour - Stage 5
Vien
Deutschland Tour – Stage 5

The storm has passed and the sun has set. But the Deutschland Tour isn't entirely over yet. (ayy!) One more stage has to be ridden around Hannover before pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Coppel can be absolutely sure of the victory in this Tour.

It's a sprinter stage once again, and like stage 2, it has some hills in the first two thirds but ends almost pan flat. It shouldn't tire out most of the sprinters. This means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb has another chance to show his dominance in the sprint. Or will riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero finally step up? Assuming this stage won't end up in a breakaway victory like yesterday, that is.

Also interesting – this stage features quite a lot of hills. Can anyone still pass pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Wackermann and steal the KoM jersey away from him on the final day?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0093.jpg

So let's get started!'After only 10 kilometers, six riders have two minutes over the pack. The names are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Postlberger
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Dal Col
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kolev
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Nareklishvili
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Drouin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Fejes

No treats to the GC, and no one has KoM jersey either. This will please pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Wackermann, though more than 16 points can be gained if someone wins most of the KoM sprints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0094.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Postlberger seems to be the most greedy to claim the KoM jersye. After three climbs, he already has 13 points!

Also, the breakaway already has 9 minutes...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0095.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Postlberger also wins the fourth KoM sprint and has virtually claimed the KoM jersey already!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0096.jpg

As Postlberger also wins the final KoM sprint, with 61 kilometers to go, their lead is only 3 minutes. Seems like the sprinters' teams have learned from yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0097.jpg

And indeed, Festina catches the breakaway with 6 kilometers to go. It's time for a bunch sprint again! Can anyone beat pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb this time and at least leave the Tour with a good feeling?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0098.jpg

And it seems like it will become a weird one. Seven riders have a gap over the rest of the peloton with 2,5 kilometers to go:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Barpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Santospcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Brockhoff
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquardpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino

Yes, Festina is leading both trains... Kastrantas should be looking to slow down the right one, as Coquard has the best odds of the top sprinters right now: Degenkolb and Swift are quite far behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0099.jpg

2 kilometers. Kastrantas indeed broke the train on the right; Mohs and Avelino now joined Coquard's wheel. Aegon's train is now storming up to the left, but this is Coquard's one to lose!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0100.jpg

Under the red kite, Santos is still leading out Coquard beautifully. Mohs and Avelino however are trying to pass him on both sides! Looks like the winner will be one of these riders...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0101.jpg

600 metres to go and the order is now Avelino-Coquard-Mohs! Other sprinters like Swift and -especially- Degenkolb are too far behind and can now be ruled out for victory...

Coquard will be mad if he can't close this one...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0102.jpg

100 meters and.. Well, just look at that picture! This is so close, who is going to take the win?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0103.jpg

The winner of the fifth and final stage of the Deutschland Tour is... Not pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino! That's all info I can give you right now! We'll have to wait for the juries to see who may step up on the podium!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0104.jpg

What we do know however is that Swift claimed the “best of the rest”-spot and became fourth. In front of Kennaugh, Degenkolb, Moser and Goss.

A small gap behind them, but leadouts Bauhaus and Van der Sanden complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0105.jpg

Van der Lijke (11th), Cavendish (12th), Vantomme (14th) and Guerao (16th) were some of the riders who couldn't find the right wheel and had another disappointing result. A Tour to forget for these riders for sure.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0106.jpg

And we can also see that a split has appeared in the peloton! And this makes some time trialists lose their position in the GC... Mostly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Viennet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ovechkin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Schädlich, which may have cost their team some valuable points... A reminder to always stay sharp until the very end...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0107.jpg

Off to the podium then. First of all, we can announce today's winner. And it was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs! Another sprint, another German winner. Though it's a disappointment for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard who had the perfect train but couldn't finish off the job... Just.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0108.jpg

And then for the final GC. Respectfully, the top 10 didn't have to do much to claim their GC spot, as they only had to show up in one stage... But since a lot of riders wanted to do it, it's obviously a very good achievement.

And then one name easily overshadows the rest: The winner of stage 3 and thus also the winner of the Deutschland Tour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Coppel! The freshman was the best time trialist and proves that, despite its unpredictably, in order to win time trial you just need to be damn good. Take notes, managers.

Behind him, completing the podium: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Vorobev and home favourite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Kittel. A surprise to see Vorobev here, as there were so many better time trialists. Kittel should've expected a top 5-result and will be pleased with his third place.

Two more surprises in fourth and fifth then: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kwok and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Viviani!

Durbridge, Cornu, Vlatos, Brändle and Goldstein complete the top 10. Good results for Brändle and Goldstein, perhaps for Cornu too, but the other two probably would've wanted more.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0109.jpg

The best sprinter in the GC (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Silvestre)
only finished 19th. But that's why there's a separate classification for them. And despite his mediocre stage 5, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb takes the points jersey with ease. That should do for him for sure!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0110.jpg

The KoM jersey then. As already announced, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Postlberger took this one from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Wackermann in the final stage. What wasn't announced however is that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Fejes just passed him too. Bummer!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0111.jpg

And finally, the U25 classification. The top riders were settled at the TT and remained unchanged: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Goldstein takes it by 8 seconds over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Kung. Sprinter pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Samolenkov joins them on the podium, one and a half minute behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/5/PCM0112.jpg

And that's it for the 2018 edition of the Tour of Germany, aka the Deutschland Tour! Apart from a breakaway win in stage 4, it turned out quite as expected: Time trialists on top, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Coppel on the highest step on the podium. We hope you enjoyed the coverage and hope to see you in another broadcast soon!
