Deutschland Tour - Stage 4
Vien
Deutschland Tour – Stage 4

After yesterday's time trial, we are back for a normal stage in the Deutschland Tour. It's a flat but long stage, and should end up in a mass sprint. As we are getting further in a tour however, a breakaway win can't be ruled out either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Houle are still mentioned as favourites... Will the bookies ever learn? At least pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb, winner of the first two stages, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift are following them this time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/4/PCM0079.jpg

Unlike stage two, today, the breakaway was formed on the first real attempt:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Olsson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Nielsen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sagiv
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Nareklishvili
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Richardson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Politt
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Drouin

None of these eitght are dangerous for the GC, Ligthart (71th) is positioned best at 5'14 behind Coppel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/4/PCM0080.jpg

Aegon, Iberia and Carrefour are leading the chase. 3'30 for the leaders with 71 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/4/PCM0081.jpg

10 kilometers to go and there is still 1'20 left. There is potential for an upset!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/4/PCM0082.jpg

5 kilometers and sitll a little bit more than a minute. Yep, it looks like the winner will be from the breakaway! Though the peloton isn't slowing down, instead of trains being formed, everyone is working together to get the breakaway back...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/4/PCM0083.jpg

3 kilometers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Olsson has started the sprint and got a small gap over his other breakaway guys. The rest are trying to save their energy a little and start their final burst a bit later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/4/PCM0084.jpg

As for the peloton, we do see Iberia, Aegon and Festina with a train once again. But will it be too late?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/4/PCM0085.jpg

1300 meters to go, and I can almost confirm that the breakaway has won. But who is going to pass the line in first? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Olsson is still in first, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Nielsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sagiv are going a bit faster than him.

8 seconds behind them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Drouin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Richardson may also still get close the the front...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/4/PCM0086.jpg

700 metres and it looks like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart is burned out, as he has to get back into the saddle! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sagiv is going the fastest of the top 3, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Olsson's lead is quite comfortable. Can he still pass him?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/4/PCM0087.jpg

No!!! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Olsson repeats his performance in the Tour de France and wins the Deutschland Tour stage 4 from a breakaway! What a mad man!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sagiv and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart also beat the peloton for second and third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/4/PCM0088.jpg

Time to look at the bunch sprint them. And it seems like it was quite a weird one. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado was a bit too good of a leadout and finishes fourth in front of his leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb. Then, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Nielsen finishes sixth from the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/4/PCM0089.jpg

The same happened to Aegon as happened to Iberia: Sbaragli and Swift finish 7th and 8th. Lo Cicero and Coquard complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/4/PCM0090.jpg

And now for the podium. Congratulations once again to breakaway expert pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Olsson!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/4/PCM0091.jpg

As for the rankings, everything stayed the same. The only notable thing is that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb now leads the points jersey classification by over 25 points. Meaning that Swift will need to win intermediate sprints to stealthis jersey from him in the final stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/4/PCM0092.jpg

And this concludes stage 4! The final stage tomorrow is quite the same, but a little bit hillier. So we might be in for the same thing! Or will the sprinters' teams be more awake now and finish this Tour in a bunch sprint?
