Stage 3 - Schifflange > Walferdange Chavanne still leading the GC after yesterday's sprint victory from Coutinho. Today's the first hilly stage with a flat finish though. It may be the less crucial of the two hilly stages here, but it's definitely a first key day for all riders, who have an eye on the GC. Particularly the pure cobblers will need to limit the losses on this parcours.
As for the stage, Ben Nasser looks like the top favorite. He performed very strong yesterday and just like Meyer and Siskevicius (as other premium puncheurs) his combination of sprint and climbing skills should make him a real threat for line honours today. The same could go for punchy sprinters like Modolo (who will be one of those riders, who target for the GC lead) or Kreder, Geschke and also Aregger. Those guys will hope for a less selective race.
Like yesterday, the break of the day has been formed quickly:
Dahlberg
Burke (GC 13th, + 0.15)
Brynjolfsson
Bonnamour
Taubel
Penko (KoM 2nd, 7pts) would join the leading group just ahead of the first mountain sprint, but he spent too much energy on his way to bridge across the group - leaving him without a chance to contest for the mountain points today!
Brynjolfsson would take two of the first four sprints, but Dahlberg appears to be the most consistent scorer across the first sprints (also taking one of the sprints as first). Bonnamour would take the fourth sprint ahead of him.
Daspuntsag then attacks from the peloton with 35km to go! The always aggressive second-tier puncheur attempts to bridge across the breakaway, that is 1'35" ahead of the bunch at this point. It looks like he's allowed to give it a try at least.
And he indeed joins the leading group with just 20.5km remaining, going past Dahlberg just at the top of today's fifth mountain sprint!
Taubel, Brynjolfsson and Penko can't follow, Bonnamour got dropped a few moments before. The peloton ain't too far behind with a 1'30" disadvantage and now only one small climb ahead.
Daspuntsag would then go for another acceleration and drop Dahlberg easily. It's enough for him to also take the final mountain sprint with just a 35" gap on the bunch though:
Provisional KoM Dahlberg 15, Thomson 13, Brynjolfsson 12, Bonnamour 11, Daspuntsag 10, Penko 8
It ain't enough for Daspuntsag to go for the stage though, as the peloton (reduced to just 64 riders in the meantime) would caught him with now just 4km to the finish!
Pibernik attacks just when Daspuntsag got caught!
Just 2.5km remaining and Pibernik opened up a 23" gap on the main group! Ben Nasser himself is leading this group now. No bigger attacks so far, so Pibernik's move has been today's most dangerous. And it still "lives" of course!
As said before, we have just 64 riders in this group now. The most notable names being dropped so far:
Ferreira (group A3, about 2 minutes behind the bunch)
Kulppi (A3)
Drucker (A6, more than 5 minutes behind)
Zhupa (A6)
Grand (A6)
As well as several sprinters, which shouldn't come as a big surprise. A tough day for particularly Drucker and Zhupa though. Also Ferreira might have hoped for something better, especially with the main group still rather big in numbers!
Just 1km to go for Pibernik, who holds on to a 26" advantage over the main group, where the situation at the front of the group goes as follows:
Hugentobler
Kluge
Kruopis
Hoelgaard
Ben Nasser - Taborre - Rosa
Serry
Modolo - Cahyadi
Haas - Favilli
Van der Haar
Chavanne
Siskevicius
Meyer
Bole
Those guys will fight for the runner-up spot only, since Pibernik takes the stage! He fought hard until the end, does not celebrate but keeps fighting for a possible and crucial gap here. He took advantage of the main favorites keep shadowing each other and chosed the perfect moment to attack, just when Daspuntsag got reeled in.
Hugentobler kicks off the bunch sprint from the leading position, with Modolo and Taborre, as well as Kluge in the premium positions with less than a kilometre to go!
Kruopis is there, Hoelgaard loses some speed.. Favilli is there..
Modolo outsprints Kluge for today's 2nd place though! Another strong sprint by the Italian, which would be enough for him to take the GC lead.. if Pibernik hadn't indeed gained a crucial gap here:
27 seconds, to precisive! So this main group lost half a minute on Pibernik, who will move up into the race lead that way.
Favilli finishes 4th on the stage, ahead of Kruopis, Hugentobler, Ben Nasser, Hoelgaard, Geschke and Meyer. Chavanne (12th) did quite well again, but his team hadn't the power/tactics to defend his GC lead for another day.
Pibernik takes the race lead by just 6 seconds ahead of Modolo and Chavanne drops to 3rd place with 15 seconds on Pibernik now. Kluge (25 seconds) as 6th and with the premium position to attack the race lead in tomorrow's cobbled stage! Some more cobblers in striking distance though. Except of those already mentioned: Ferreira (+ 3.46 in the GC now) and Zhupa/Drucker/Grand would need an extraordinary stage tomorrow, if they want to stay in the GC contention somehow.
