Deutschland Tour – Stage 2

Stage two of the Deutschland Tour and it's another one for the sprinters. Though this one features a lot more hills in the first half of the stage. If no gaps will appear there (and that if is a big one!), it might cause the sprinters who have some puncheur abilities to have that little bit of extra near the end that could net them a stage win in Wolfsburg.

The bookies believe this is the case... Though they also did yesterday for little reason. As apart from yesterday's winner and GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Houle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Theuns are mentioned as the favourites. It should give them a little morale boost at least, as they had no influence on the result yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0024.jpg

The first break that managed to pass the front of the peloton was by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Edet and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Wackermann. Who's going to join them?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0025.jpg

Nine riders try to do so, including.. Yes, you've seen in right, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb! I guess he just followed his wheel and got in the break somehow, but at least it'll save his teammates a bit of work having to chase this large break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0026.jpg

This means Edet and Wackermann are the only ones ahead at the first moutain sprint, which Edet wins with ease.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0027.jpg

Once again a large group tries to break away.. And once again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb is in it... What the heck!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0028.jpg

Finally he allows one more rider to break away. Likely because he, just like Edet and Wackermann isn't a threat to the GC at all. I'm taking about pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Boonratanathanakorn, who is confirmed as one of the three riders in the break of the day!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0029.jpg

Edet takes the second mountain sprint for minor points. This will get interesting for him though, as two category 3 climbs are coming up. And he only needs two more points to tie Senyenov for the KoM jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0030.jpg

He doesn't manage to win the first one though. In fact, he only gets last. This means we will see another fight for the KoM jersey on the final climb, as the standings are now as follows:

Senyenov 12
Edet 12
Unchima 10
Boonratanathanakorn 9
Wackermann 8

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0031.jpg

And Wackermann wins the final sprint with ease. Edet seems to have spent too much energy at the first sprints and is third once again...

This means the standings are this stage will be:

Wackermann 14
Edet 14
Boonratanathanakorn 13
Senyenov 12

We'll have to wait and see how the organisers handle this tie!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0032.jpg

Both the breakaway and the pack end the downhill without any problems. The breakaway still has 5 minutes with 70 kilometers to go though, which triggers a lot of teams to join Iberia in the chase. This mainly includes Carrefour, Áegon, Fablok and Festina.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0033.jpg

And this great work between the many teams means the break has almost zero chance to succeed. With 17 kilometers to go, Wackermann is giving it one last try. He's still around a minute ahead of the peloton. How long can he hold on?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0034.jpg

Not very long.. In fact Edet and Boonratanathanakorn work together and get him back. They can't start looking at each other now though and have to keep working together, as the pack is nearing rapidly...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0035.jpg

They do hoewever, and almost reach a sur place... Which triggers Wackermann to try it again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0036.jpg

He doesn't stand a chance against the storming peloton though. Which means it's bunch sprint time!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0037.jpg

3 Kilometers to go and we can once again see 3 trains: Iberia's Festina's and Aegon's. Aegon's in the furthest behind, though thtye may have learned from yesterday and decided to storm up a bit later this time.

Let's take a closer look, shall we?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sandenpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criadopcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swiftpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Vlatospcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero

Which once again means that the punchier sprinters, who were marked as favourite, are invisible.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0038.jpg

2 kilometers and the only change we can see is that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme managed to jump to Lo Cicero's wheel on the right. Aegon really needs to move up now though...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0039.jpg

Under the red kite we can see that the trains have completely fallen apart! Santos is about to let Coquard finish the job on the right, but Goss and Moser have decided to leave them and go by themself in the middle. Avelino, Lo cicero, Mohs and Vantomme are all in striking position, too.

Once again Degenkolb seems the chillest however, both him and his leadout Merino Criado are yet to show any agression.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0040.jpg

700 metres... Moser is now up front, what a surprise would it be if he could keep this up! Goss in in second, in front of top favourites Degenkolb and Lo Cicero, Others, including Swift and Coquard, will need a great burst of speed if they want to win today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0041.jpg

400 metres. Moser and Goss are slowing down, allowing Degenkolb to get next to them! Swift is also getting to top speed on the left.

This seems to be Degenkolb's once again, unless Moser can hang on.... Or can anyone still skyrocket to first place?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0042.jpg

Ohh, Swift is getting close...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0043.jpg

Though it's not enough!pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb wins for the second day in a row, in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift. And the German crowd goes wild!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino passes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Moser on the line to get third, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Stauff finishes fifth. Lo Cicero, Mohs, Vantomme, Guerao and Goss complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0044.jpg

Yesterday's surprise pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh couldn't do much today and finishes 13th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke also couldn't benefit from the hlllier stage: 11th for him, far behind the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0045.jpg

The biggest disappointment today however was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish, he only finishes 15th....

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0046.jpg

Time for the podium then, at which we can see that obviously pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb leads the first three classifications!

Kennaugh, Swift, Avelino and Coquard are the other riders with bonification seconds and will start the time trial as the top 5.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0047.jpg

And finally, as for the KoM jersey... Well, for some reason pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Wackermann has 16 points instead of 14, even though I counted many times. Home adventage? Corrupt juries? Or am I just dumb? No clue, but he will wear the KoM jersey tomorrow!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/2/PCM0048.jpg

That's it for stage 2.. And now that the sprinters have had their fun (for now), it's time for the GC-deciding time trial. Until then!
