Deutschland Tour - Stage 1
Vien
Deutschland Tour – Stage 1

The Deutschland Tour starts off with one of the four sprinter stages this renewed stage race has to offer. The first one is 196 kilometres long and could be ranked as the third hardest one in this tour: A bit hilly, slightly uphill near the end too, but espcially since this is only the first stage, all sprinters should be fresh near the finish line.

They bookies do think the hills will have an influence on this stage, though. They even regard pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Houle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Theuns as today's favourites!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0001.jpg

The first attack was made by Fenn, Uchima (who won the first mountain sprint), Edet, Tarvis and Pranata. They did not manage to escape, but a later attempt led by mostly the same riders created the break of the day:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Fenn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Pranata
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Senyenov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Van Niekerk
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Uchima
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Tarvis.

They have 1'30 on the peloton with 170 kilometres to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Senyenov'wins the second mountain sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sagiv and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Uchima. Though even more interestingly, the gap with the peloton got reduced by one minute.. Will they get caught early on?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Fenn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Van Niekerk were dropped from the leaders on the climb and got swallowed up by the peloton. The other five are still going strong now, and the peloton allows them to do so – 2,5 minutes already!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0004.jpg

Mountain sprint #3 was won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Pranata! Quite far behind them, Tarvis sprints to second in front of Senyenov. This means the standings are as follows:

Sagiv 6
Uchima 6
Pranata 6
Senyenov 6
Tarvis 3

The next and final mountain sprint is a category 3 climb, with 6 points being given. So we might be in for a mini-finale soon...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0005.jpg

And that final KoM sprint was won by. *drumroll*.. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Senyenov! Uchima was ahead for quite a while, but Senyenov passed him on the final meters. That will be a nice jersey for him for at least one day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0008.jpg

Time to focus on the stage win then. Iberia and Aegon are leading the chase. They have 4 minutes to make up with 60 kilometers to go. Shouldn't get too scary, but who knows?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0009.jpg

The chase is going fine.. But what was missed by the weather forecast were strong winds. And the peloton is splitting apart with 19 kilometers to go! None of the sprinters were affected, but some outsiders for the GC who have to hope to come back are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Korsaeth
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Gonzalez Salas
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Gretsch
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Dal Col
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Nascimento
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Yatsevich....

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0010.jpg

.With 10 kilometers to go, this means only 101 riders are left in the peloton. The only rider from the break who is still ahead is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Senyenov; the other riders used their white flag without too much of a struggle. He is 32 seconds ahead of the peloton, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Brockhoff. The peloton still seems to be into chasing mode; no trains are being formed yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0011.jpg

6 kilometers to go and Senyenov seems to be tired. Iberia, Aegon and Festina aren't very scared of him anymore and are working on trains...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0012.jpg

And with 3 kilometers to go, we can see that Festina is the winner of the battle of the trains and is quite far ahead of Iberia's train! This is how the field currently looks like:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Santos
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendishpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Brockhoff
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Sbaragli
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swiftpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantommepcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Van der Lijke
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Guerao
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelinopcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Theuns

All other sprinters, such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero, missed getting a train and likely won't be fighting for any top spots today...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0013.jpg

2 kilometers and Aegon's train managed to close the gap to Festina's! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard should be the favourites to win this now. What can Iberia do on the left though?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0014.jpg

Aegon keeps going but Festina is exploding! It looks like they let pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar go on for way too long... Even Iberia on the right now look more solid.

This means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift is in pole posiiton, but will likely get alone soon, and there's still a kilometer to go...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0015.jpg

Indeed, under the red kite, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Sbaragli has to let the pace go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Swift immediately loses time to Iberia's train.Behind Degenkolb, Kennaugh and Goss are the ones looking for a gap to fancy their own chances!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0016.jpg

500 metres, Degenkolb was launched and is launching himself to the finish! Swift still has a top spot but is on damage control, Kennaugh, Guerao and Goss seem to be fighting for podium spots... Though Coquard has the highest pace right now; he finally went for it. But will it be too late?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0017.jpg

Far too late! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb is the winner of the first stage of his home tour! He was the fastest sprinter, but more importantly, had the train who kept the calmes and balanced theit energy the best. Congrats!

Kennaugh just held on to second (pic was taken a bit too late, sorry!) in front of Coquard, who simply started his sprint too late. Guerao finished fourth, in front of Cavendish. Swift went too early and managed the finish sixth place, which could've gotten a lot worse if the finish line was just a bit later.

Mohs, Avelino, Goss and Van der Lijke complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0018.jpg

After the top 10 there was a large gap to the number 11: Silvestre. Actually, the gap was so large that 15 seconds were given!!!

Another few names that couldn't make the top 10 but had potential to do so were Theuns (17th), Houle (22nd), Vantomme (24th) and Lo Cicero, who was too tired to sprint and fell outside of the top 50...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0019.jpg

The crosswinds inded causes some time gaps to appear. Only 67 riders finishes within the aforementioned 15 seconds, which means a lot of riders can say goodbye to their GC dreams...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0020.jpg

But let's get out of all the drama and watch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb enjoy his victory! He obviously leads the GC and spoints classification, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0021.jpg

And as announced, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Senyenov gets the mountain jersey!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0022.jpg

and that's not all for him as he takes the U25 jersey too, thanks to the help of bonification seconds! What a nice surprise!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Deutschland/1/PCM0023.jpg

That's all for stage 1 of the Deutschland Tour. Tomorrow will feature another sprint. Revenge time for the sprinters, or will Degenkolb assert his dominance even more?
