Euskal Bizikleta - Stage 4
Vien
Euskal Bizikleta – Stage 4

Finally, it's time for the fourth and final stage of the Euskal Bizikleta! And the race organisers have saved the best for last. A 159-kilometer stage from Zumarrage to Arrate which has six categorised climbs and an uphill finish. Fans of cycling from all over the world will enjoy this one!

GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kadri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Di Maggio finished with the same time yesterday and are likely to be fighting it out for the GC victory. If pre-race favourites pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ben Nasser want to win, they have to make up over a minute and attack early on!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0059.jpg

With so many climbs, there's a huge chance the KoM classification will get wide open once again. It's led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Ballerini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Poljanec. Of these riders, only Ballerini made it to the breakaway, but his KoM win isn't certain yet: There are quite a few better puncheurs in there!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Thill
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Craddock
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Fumic
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Othman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Bauer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Rocchetti
and, as already mentioned, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Ballerini.

All 4'09 or further behind in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0060.jpg

Once the breakaway was long confirmed as the break of the day, with 3 minutes ahead, three riders decide to make the jump after all:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Paajanen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vuillermoz (GC #21, +2'38)
And Ballerini's KoM rival, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Poljanec.

Will the peloton allow a 11-rider break though? It seems dangerous, even if only Vuillermoz is a small threat to the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0061.jpg

The pack hesitates, but lets them go. Three minutes as we start the first (cat 2) climb of the day!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0062.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Paajanen wins the first KoM sprint with ease. He's now on 16 points. Ballerini and Poljanec couldn't get any points and are stuck on 32 and 28 points, respectively.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0063.jpg

The second sprint also goes to Paajanen. Ballerini got close to fifth, but gets zero points for his efforts.

Ballerini – 32
Poljanec – 28
Paajanen – 26

4 minutes to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0064.jpg

The third climb is the most interesting, as it's a category 1-climb. Lots of points and handed out here, and the 16 points are once again for Paajanen!

Paajanen – 42
Ballerini – 32
Poljanec – 28

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0065.jpg

Meanwhile the peloton isn't standing still either. Although the gap is still 3,5 minutes, only 52 riders are left in the bunch!

No notable names got dropped though, but we might be seeing some riders out of time today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0066.jpg

Paajanen takes another KoM sprint. This means that we can now almost confirm that he has won the KoM jersey. So it's time to focus on the stage results!
2'30 to the peloton with 43 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0067.jpg

As the breakaway is slowly giving up against the peloton, we can see that its pace is already making some puncheurs drop with three climbs still to go! The first names are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Haas (GC #9) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Weiss (GC #13), who have a long day to go...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0068.jpg

Two climbs and 22 kilometers to go. Only two breakaway riders are left: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Craddock and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Paajanen. But they do have over two minutes left. So they are potential stage winners!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0069.jpg

No attacks on the second final climb then, which should please the three GC leaders. Paajanen and Craddock almost got caught already, though. The peloton stayed complete: There were 46 riders at the foot of the climb, and despite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Diaz' fast pace, 48 will start the final brutal climb of the Euskal Bizikleta in the main group!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0070.jpg

But before we even started the final climb, with 4.8 kilometers to go, we have an attack. And it's the same rider as yesterday who starts the firework: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Bardet!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0071.jpg

His attack only lasted 1,5 kilometer however. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Elissonde and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Vichot get him back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0072.jpg

3 kilometers to go and no attacks have been placed... But we go see that that peloton has split into two! And some big names are in trouble. They include:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Di Maggio (GC #3)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Serry (GC #8)pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Hategeka (GC #16)
And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Weiss (GC #13) once again. What a terrible day for ENI-MOL after yesterday's convincing stage...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0073.jpg

Further near the front of the peloton, GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kadri could've been positioned better too. Though it's not known if he's in trouble, or just timing his climb differently. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Pibernik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Teuns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ben Nasser are in the back of the front group, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0074.jpg

And ooh... pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kadri was in trouble... Surely he must've been further ahead otherwise? He doesn't look to be struggling, but I think he can forget about the GC win today. Espcially as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Elissonde, who is weaker on paper, is leading the peloton and deciding the pace.

Same counts for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ben Nasser, who won't be taking revenge for yesterday's result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0075.jpg

Let's just see who wins the stage first, shall we? And three outsiders are positioned the best so far: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Elissonde, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Teklit and attacker pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Bardet. Though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Teuns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier still have a kilometer to move up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer is a bit further back, but with Kadri and Di Maggio cracking, the GC win must be on his mind!

Yes, that is an Equinor rider in first on this picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0076.jpg

500 metres, and yes, that is still an Equinor rider in first. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Teklit can smell the vitory, but with a climb this steep, there's still a lot that can happen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Elissonde is behind him with about the same speed. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Teuns is faster, but has ground to make up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0077.jpg

300 metres, this one is clearly between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Elissonde and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Teklit! Elissonde is faster, but Teklit has an adventage... Will we see an Equinor rider winning today?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0078.jpg

YESS! LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, AN EQUINOR RIDER HAS WON A STAGE! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Teklit is the winner of the fourth and last stage of the Euskal Bizikleta, in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Elissonde! At the moment of writing this report, if my sources are correct, it was the first win of an Equinor rider ever. What a memorable day for them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0079.jpg

Bardet, Teuns and Campero finish 19 seconds behind the two. Actually all riders from #3-#19 finish within the same time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0080.jpg

Which is good news for Ben Nasser and Meyer, who, despite finishing only 11th and 17th respectively don't lose any time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0081.jpg

Behind them though, there was some drama to unfold. Kadri is the first rider with a time loss, #20 at +1'07.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0082.jpg

Degand and Vichot finish behind them. 1'31 and 1'41 on Teklit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0083.jpg

And even worse... Di Maggio only manages to finish 43rd, over five minutes behind Teklit. Serry seems to have waited for him and finished ten seconds earlier...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/4/PCM0084.jpg

And sadly, that's it as far as the pictures go. With the game crashing after the stage, all we can do is showing you the final results by text.

So first of all, the winner of the GC.. It's Travis Meyer! Certainly the most consistent rider in this stage race. Well deserved!

Second place is for accelertation wonder Kadri, who managed to create enough of a gap yesterday to maintain a podium spot! He's followed by another rider with high acceleration: Ben Nasser. Just outside of the podium are Teuns and a slightly disappointing Gautier.

Further in the top 10 are Pibernik, Equinor's saviour Teklit, Geschke, Bardet and Hugentobler. Pre-race favourite Di Maggio can only be found in 19th.

The points jersey is for Kadri, just one point ahead of Haddi. The mountain GC is for Paajanen, whilst Pibernik secures himself the U25 jersey. Finally, Adastra has won the team GC.

And that was it for the Euskal Bizikleta! A great emotional race with lost of tears... Just not the same type of them! Goodbye for this year!
