Euskal Bizikleta - Stage 3
Vien
Euskal Bizikleta – Stage 3

We've reached the halfway point of the Euskal Bizikleta! And not only does this mean that it's time for the GC favourites to step up, but the profile wants to tell them this, too. As today we are in for the first official stage for the puncheurs. Four laps around a circuit followed by two climbs and a downhill finish. Time gaps may prove a little low after 170 kilometers due to this downhill finish, but one thing's for sure: A bad day, and you're out of contention for the win of this tour.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vangenechten will be hoping for a quiet stage today, so that he can keep his leader's jersey for one more day. Though it's hard to not see a puncheur winning today. If so, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ben Nasser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Di Maggio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer are the most likely to succeed in achieving this.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0036.jpg

No KoM points will be given today, which means it will be a quiet day for KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Ballerini. Still, seven riders are interested in trying to win the stage from a breakaway:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Campero
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Vila
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Yzeiraj
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Quintana
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Hussein
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Lasinis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Abreu

Of these riders, only Hussein and Lasinis are behind in the GC. The rest finished within the peloton twice and has 52 seconds to make up on Vangenechten.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0037.jpg

Oberfranken and Telia are keeping the gap low. 3'30 with 100 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0039.jpg

A big bunch of nothing then. With the final two climbs to go, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Quintana has a 40-second gap with the peloton. The rest has been caught already. Puncheurs are in striking distance from the front of the peloton, will we see any attacks here already?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0040.jpg

Yeah, but not by a rider you'd expect: It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Bardet who makes the first move! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Hardy tries to close the gap, but he's going so fast that only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier can follow him! ENI-MOL seems to be stressed about this and try to close this gap as soon as they can.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0041.jpg

Though when this was about to happen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier decides to go off by himself! And it's quite a strong attack too, he has 18 seconds near the top and will try to keep this during the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0042.jpg

And over this top, we can also see that the peloton split up heavily. Nine riders are now leading the chase to Gautier:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Quintana (from the break)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Di Maggio
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kadri
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ben Nasser
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Bugge
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Bardet
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Teuns
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Hardy

They have 46 seconds on the peloton (64 riders) already, meaning if a rider from the pack still wants to win, they have to ride a very fast final climb!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0043.jpg

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vangenechten already lost contact with the peloton. So the winner of today's stage will likely be the new GC leader too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0044.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kadri lead the chasers on the downhill and managed to get Gautier back before the start of the final climb.

Time to see how this stage will unfold!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0045.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Quintana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Hardy almost immediately have to drop from the 10-man group. They've both done their job and won't surprise even further today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0046.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Bugge is the next one to drop due to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer's frantic pace...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0047.jpg

And oh my.. At the top, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ben Nasser and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier get in trouble too! They have to ride a very fast descent to join back the leaders with only 6 kilometers left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0048.jpg

But the survival of the fittest-race continues, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Teuns gets dropped on the descent!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0049.jpg

This means three riders will fight it out for victory today: Meyer, Kadri and Di Maggio. And they enter the red kite in this order.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0050.jpg

Di Maggio doesn't stand a chance in this sprint, so this one will be between Kadri and Meyer. Kadri is faster, but Meyer has the inside corner. Who will win it?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0051.jpg

It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kadri! What a shocker! The Frenchman wasn't a top favourite, not even the best puncheur of his team on paper, but simply kept up with the pace of the favourites and finished the deal as if it was nothing! What a great result for him and Delvaux!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer takes second in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Di Maggio. They will have the biggest chance to win the GC now for sure.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0052.jpg

Now let's see what happened behind them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ben Nasser managed to pass pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Teuns and takes fourth, 1'09 behind Kadri.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0053.jpg

A four-man group then finishes 1'34 behind Kadri, which includes three riders who were still in the peloton at the foot of the final climb! It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Haas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Serry and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Pibernik, who saved their energy well and got what's probably their best possible result today.

This can't be said for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier, who gambled with an early attack and has to pay the prize because of it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0054.jpg

And overjoyed with the win of his teammate, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Vichot ends 10th. Though we're already talking about a loss of 2'18 here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0055.jpg

that concludes the racing, now it's time for the podium. It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kadri who enjoys his victory once more.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0056.jpg

He also takes the GC lead... And even the points jersey! He's surprised about that, too!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0057.jpg

Meanwhile, the U25 jersey is for GC's 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Pibernik. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Schlegel seems to still be able to compete with him for the win here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/3/PCM0058.jpg

So, that was puncheur stage #1 with a surprise winner, a trend here in Spain.. Will we see the same uphill tomorrow? Tune in then for the grand finale!
