Euskal Bizikleta – Stage 2
It's another day in the saddle for the peloton of the Euskal Bizikleta. And while yesterday may have been a resting day for most, with sprinters only being able to sprint for second behind Vangenechten, chances of riders taking it easy today will be lower. As we're still having a “flat” stage, but with two pretty damn major climbs near the end, chances are huge that it will affect the final outcome of a sprint. Or will any of the GC riders fancy their chances today already?
The famous algorythm doesn't believe any attacks will be succesful. They expect a sprint like yesterday, with punchy sprinters having about as much chance to win as regular sprinters.
Lots of attacks right from the start. And the reason is a KoM sprint at 3.7 kilometers already. Eriksson wins it, in front of Poljanec and Olei.
KoM jersey wearer Ballerini also tried, but only magaed to get fourth. Are these guys interested in joining the break of the day too though?
They were, but the peloton didn't allow them to. Likely because of the good GC placings.
After they've been caught however, on the long category 2 climb, Ballerini and Poljanec give it another go. And Ballerini wins the KoM sprint, meaning he's virtually back in the jersey again. 16-14.
The next category 3 KoM sprint was close, but Poljanec takes it. Which means it's 20-20!
They are 3'17 ahead of the pack with 70 kilometers to go. Telia is leading the pack, but they don't seem to be actively chasing just yet.
The next one is for Ballerini again. 26-24 now, with two category 3 climbs to go.
And the first one is Ballerini's! Meaning the KoM jersey will very likely stay his.
What's even more interesting though: Still 2 minutes with only one climb to go. They have a chance to stay ahead...
Though it won't happen this time. With three more kilometers until the mountain top and 15 kilometers left in the stage. Rosa catches them back. Now we can see how the GC favourites handle this climb. Will we see any attacks?
The answer is no! Which means we're in for a sprint. And judging by Thorsen's decent positioning, we can say that all main sprinters will be there today despite the hills.
The only team that managed to set up some sort of a train is Valio. Though as we can see here, it's a complete mess: Aaltio missed Omarsson wheel and Manninen has to bridge the gap by himself!
Berger, Bogdanovics and Meyer are in the front row too, with 2,5 kilometers to go. Geschke and Haddi feel dangerous too, having found Manninen's train's wheel.
Berger is the fastest right now though, and takes Habtom and Angarita with him!
But they run out of steam soon and it's Geschke and Haddi who are leading under the red kite! Meyer seems to want to go for a top spot too, while the favourites are quite far behind. Actually Gautier seems to be outperforming Manninen on the right.
300 meters. Haddi leaves Geschke's wheel and seems to be going for victory! Manninen and Kreder are now moving up too, but surely they started their sprint too late?
Kreder storms up extremely fast, but it's too late! Moroccan champion Haddi is the winner of the second stage of the Euskal Bizikleta! He took the wheel of the smartest sprinter today, Geschke, who has the settle with third behind Kreder.
Kadri and Bogdanovics complete the top 5.
Behind them a lot of puncheurs, who were hoping for bonification seconds today but just missed out: Gautier, Ben Nasser, Pibernik, Teuns and Teklit.
Manninen only managed to finish 11th. Seems like the stage was a little bit too hard, but with Haddi's win, this can't be an excuse!
Let's all cheer for Haddi once again!
Vangenechten still owns the GC lead, in front of Haddi. And he can't seem to believe it!
Haddi also takes the green jersey, thanks to the point is also gained yesterday. A nice extra for him for sure.
And that marks the end of the “sprinter” stages of the Euskal Bizikleta, with two winners that certainly would've earned you a lot of money if you bet on them beforehand. Only time will tell if these surprises continue once we enter the true puncheur stages of this race!
