Euskal Bizikleta - Stage 1
Vien
Euskal Bizikleta - Stage 1

The riders are ready for the first “flat” stage of the Euskal Bizikleta from Pamplona to Viana. And I'm saying “flat”, because I've seen flatter stages being marked as a hilly stage before... Anyway, flat is the way the peloton will approach this 180-kilometer stage, and therefore a sprint will be the most likely outcome.

Actually the bookies expect the hills to have an even smaller outcome on this stage than anyone could've expected: They've placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Thorsen as top favourite! Though realistically, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kreder should be the guys to beat today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0001.jpg

The first rider to try to break away is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Ferreira. He quickly gains a minute on the pack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0003.jpg

He is joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Quicibal a bit later. Will anyone else try to bridge the gap?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0004.jpg

Yep! Three more riders try to do so: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Vila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Oliveira and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Zahiri. Though the peloton doesn't like this. Valio and Campari are trying to chase them back!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0005.jpg

Therefore a new attempt had to be made, and this one was successful. The four riders in the breakaway of the day are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Ballerini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Poljanec
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vangenechten
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Yzeiraj.

2,5 minutes on the pack with 125 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0006.jpg

There is only one KoM sprint today, so its winner will become the wearer of the KoM jersey. And this winner is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Ballerini! Though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vangenechten had the most speed, but completely mistimed his move...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0007.jpg

Meanwhile, Valio, Campari and Eddie Stobart are the most active chasers. They have 4'43 to make up with '81 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0008.jpg

They have to hurry up, though. Under the 10 kilometer-banner, the gap with the break is still 1'06.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0009.jpg

And right as the gap gets below a minute, with 7,4 kilometers to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vangenechten decides to attack on what's probably the steepest part of the stage that's left! It seems like a punchy attack, too. Both his breakaway companions and the peloton will have trouble catching him, that's for sure...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0010.jpg

With only 5 kilometers to go, the peloton still hasn't gotten closer! And Vangenechten also has 28 seconds over his three breakaway buddies. As long as he doesn't crack, this stage might be his!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0011.jpg

And it seems like his main rivals won't be from the breakaway, as they are about to get reeled in. We can see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kreder in a great position, but they may have to sprint for second...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0012.jpg

But I can't make it more exciting than it actually was, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vangenechten never slowed down a won the first stage of the Euskal Bizikleta! That's a great start for him and Telia, and the gap he made should allow him to keep the leader's jersey for at least another stage, too. A great result showing that breakaways can even work out on earlier stages in a tour!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0013.jpg

30 seconds later, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen sprints to second with ease. Surely some words will be shared in the team bus, as it's almost unbelievable that Valio couldnt've chased this one harder.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Geschke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Haddi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Bogdanovics also finish within the top 5. A mixed field, meaning that positioning and/or form of the day may have been more important than the ability to get over the hills without losing energy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ben Nasser is the first of the GC riders, finishing 9th. In front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kreder, who certainly would've wanted more today.

There was a split in the peloton, but no time gaps were being given.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0015.jpg

Podium time then! Congratulations once again to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vangenechten!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0016.jpg

He doesn't get the KoM jersey however, as he got outsmarted by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Ballerini on the only categorised hill today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0017.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Poljanec takes the U25 jersey for today thanks to some bonification seconds he gained in the break. It was a close one, though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Euskal/1/PCM0018.jpg

And that's it for the first stage of the Euskal Bizikleta! Will the peloton have learned from its mistakes on tomorrow's similar stage? Hopefully for them!
