The fourth stage takes place in Wales, from Machynlleth to Caerphilly. I'm sure I pronounced that wrong. Anyway, we're going back into the hills. After yesterday's shake-up the puncheurs will have to step into the limelight again.
A five-man morning breakaway:
Iino
Vlasov
Belevics
Rosa
Sanchez Gil
Boonratanathanakorn and Krul tried to join but failed.
Michely currently fifth in the KoM standings, and attacks seven kilometers before the first sprint in order to gain points. The gap is just under two minutes though.
The Luxembourgian makes it past Belevics, but the rest stays ahead. Sanchez takes ten points on the top of Pont Crugnant. The peloton did not increase the pace and allows Michely, who sits 34th in the GC at 8'55, to be part of the breakaway.
Kasa and Videika see through what Michely is doing and decide the best defense is to attack. They too bridge towards the breakaway which now counts eight riders.
Michely shows his efforts have not been in vain as he takes sixteen important points at the Cwm Owen. Sanchez takes twelve while Kasa and Videika only take fringe points. The new virtual classification is Michely at 40, Pirazzi at 36, Cahyadi and Kasa 32, Videika 26 and Sanchez 24.
An attack from the peloton at roughly 40 kilometers to go, by Geschke, Dall'Oste, Bernas and Ziesler. They have come within 30 seconds of the break at the first ascent out of four on Caerphilly Mountain. 35 kilometers to go, the peloton at 1'30 and very close behind.
Only Michely, Sanchez Gil and Iino survive on the top, that also being the order on the category one mountain sprint. Vlasov together with Dall'Oste and Geschke, the remainder of the former breakaway caught by the peloton with Bernas and Ziesler awaiting similar fate. The second and last ascent are uncategorized, but the third does give points towards the mountain classification.
On the second ascent the heavens have opened to bring us some classic British weather. Michely and Sanchez Gil the two leaders, 30 seconds to Geschke and Iino, another 30 seconds to Dall'Oste and another 30 seconds to the peloton. SPAR takes over control from Indosat. Coppel in fourth place, Anuar Aziz in fifth.
Two laps remaining Iino and Dall'Oste are caught, Geschke still trying to join the two leaders. Only 53 riders remain, with from the GC top twenty Van Zandbeek, Brändle and Reus dropped.
Here goes Froome! There's answer from a Indosat rider but it's not Anuar Aziz, it's De Souza.
Froome finds his way past the leaders and is first at the top. This is the third time we passed the mountain, but there's an uncategorized fourth time. Michely holds on to seconds to extend his lead in the KoM even further. More attacks in the background, let's see when they get to the top.
De Souza was indeed a smokescreen for Anuar Aziz. Di Maggio followed the Malaysian, with Sanchez fighting to hold on. Then a gap to Geschke, with Bilbao and Juul-Jensen.
Ten kilometers to go, and the backmarkers make the gaps difficult to assess. Froome has 45 seconds to the duo of Anuar Aziz and Di Maggio. Michely did a bit of pacing for him, now together with Bilbao and Juul-Jensen at one minute from Froome. Another 25 seconds to Geschke and the reduced peloton at another 20.
Coppel leading the chasing from the 24-man group himself. Konovalovas, Chérel and Hategeka dropped.
Froome reaches the top with the same gap to Anuar Aziz and Di Maggio. Stage win likely in the bag, but the most important question is how much time he can gain on Coppel?
Coppel rides away from his group together with Palini, Meyer and Izagirre. The latest gap to Froome is two minutes. Bilbao and Juul-Jensen thirty seconds ahead of them. Geschke fell back into the peloton.
Two kilometers and Froome is hiding inside a group of lapped riders. GPS shows Anuar Aziz and Di Maggio at 58, with group Coppel catching Bilbao and Juul-Jensen at 1'49.
Chris Froome would not be caught, and wins the fourth stage. This might put him back into GC contention!
Anuar Aziz beats Di Maggio for second by quite a margin. 52 seconds for the former, 1'03 for the latter. Both picking up bonus seconds.
Strong final five kilometers for the group Coppel, limiting their loss to 1'13. Izagirre takes fourth ahead of Bilbao, Meyer, Juul-Jensen and Coppel.
Ignatiev with a late escape to take ninth at 1'49.
Palini sacrificing himself for Coppel, rewarded with tenth place at 2'16.
A much better performance from Bystrom compared to the first stage, finishing eleventh but still losing 2'41. Moazemi behind him at 2'54.
Then we have to wait another minute for the next group. De Souza finishes slightly ahead of it. Costa at nearly four minutes from Froome in fourteenth. Pichon, Roux, Waeytens, Nepomnyachsniy, Bellis, Pibernik and a few others in this group.
Choi, Navardauskas and Kebede at five minutes. The large group of riders at 6'18.
Coppel remains in the lead with Izagirre second at 3'04. Ignatiev the new number three at 4'37, Froome jumping to fourth at 5'28, Nepomnyachsniy and Costa fifth and sixth at 5'51 and 5'53. Juul-Jensen, Meyer, Anuar Aziz and Bilbao moving into the top ten. Coppel and Anuar Aziz tied at the top of the points classification with 45. Michely with a coup in the mountains classification. Gougeard still in the youth jersey but Pibernik closing in today. SPAR at the top of the teams classification with Fablok close behind.
