Tour of Britain - Stage 3

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/01.jpg

The day puncheurs are fearing is here, the ultra long time trial. There's a slight hill, but likely not enough to throw the time trialists of guard. We will definitely see a shake-up at the top of the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Burke is not the first to start but is the first to finish as the second-a-last in the GC overtakes last placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Puccioni. The benchmark time set by him is 1 hour, 16 minutes and 5 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/03.jpg

He couldn't settle in the hot seat for long, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Stannard throws 1'38 off that time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Johansson is 37 seconds down at the second checkpoint, but regains a second in the final part for provisional second place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Li slots in behind these two at 49 seconds from Stannard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/06.jpg

Familiar picture. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Kovalev is 47 seconds down but decreases the deficit towards the end, 42 seconds for third place. The big guns now know Stannard can be beaten with a strong final section.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Viennet leads at the first split by sixteen seconds. His advantage goes down to seven in the midpart, but extends back to sixteen to beat his teammate: 1h14'11.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Goldstein five seconds faster at the first split, dead even on the second, three seconds down on the third and nine at the finish. He puts himself between Viennet and Stannard in second.

Teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Nechita virtual seventh at 1'17.

Underperformance from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Christian, eight place at 1'19.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Cheung lost only 44 seconds, which makes him virtual fourth.

A bad day for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Novak, who's already way down after the callback on stage one. + 2'47 and another dent in his morale.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Postlberger a bit shaky at the start, Twenty seconds down at the split, but otherwise a very consistent race which sees him finish at + 24 and the new fourth place.

One of the hybrids who might take advantage of today's stage: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Bazhkou. He lost just over a minute in a decent performance, finishing between Kovalev and Li.

I called Christian an underperformer but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Steensen does even worse. + 2'25 and way outside the top ten.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Brändle overtakes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Prevar and teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Gidich on his way. The extra reference points sees him beat Viennet's time by eighteen seconds. New leader!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Reus using the hill to his benefit. Fifth place at 39 seconds is better than we've seen him perform in recent times.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/13.jpg

Similar skillset for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Navardauskas, slightly worse time. Sixth place at exactly a minute from Brändle. This performance might move him into the GC top ten.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Van Zandbeek three second slower on stage, but four seconds ahead in the GC, so he stays ahead of his Lithuanian teammate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/15.jpg

No mountains for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Choi, but a decent time trial. + 1'29 keeps him ahead of Van Zandbeek and Navardauskas.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Nepomnyachsniy overtakes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Konovalovas, who isn't too bad a time-trialist. Nepo posts the seventh time at 43 seconds and currently the best GC time amongst the finishers.

Konovalovas at 3'31, had hoped for better I think but virtually fifth in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Moazemi at 3'36, but that keeps him ahead of Konovalovas in the GC by one second.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Izagirre lost a bit of time on the first stage, but he should make up for that today. It's not the winning time, currently sixth at 42 seconds, but he should be back into GC contention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/18.jpg

Onto the GC top ten. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Froome loses 4'45 and will not be in the top ten after today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Juul-Jensen with a better ride, gaining a minute on Froome.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Ignatiev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Costa started next, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Coppel overtakes all of them. He's nearly a minute up on Brändle at the first check, and continues to demolish the opposition: 1h11'37 is surely the winning time and the GC lead. Brändle at 2'16.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/21.jpg

Shocking from Ignatiev to be overtaken by Coppel. In fact, he lost four minutes and finished just outside the stage top twenty. That's an end to his title aspirations.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/22.jpg

Costa does better, but still losing just over three minutes. That means Izagirre and Nepomnyachsniy jump him in the GC, besides Coppel obviously.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/23.jpg

And then Meyer, overtaken by Coppel, Costa and Ignatiev. He would finish at 6'12, which actually isn't that bad as it only drops him just outside the GC top ten.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/24.jpg

Nine minutes and eleven seconds for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Di Maggio. Ouch. That will be a huge tumble in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Palini doesn't do much better though, eight minutes and twelve seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Britain/S3/26.jpg

And finally, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Anuar Aziz. He beats Palini's time by seven seconds, but that's not something to be proud of. His time in the yellow jersey is over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Jerome Coppel wins the stage with a giant margin. Brändle and Viennet complete the podium at over two minutes.

The Frenchman now also the GC leader, by three minutes over nearest rivals Izagirre, Nepomnyachsniy and Costa. That's a considerable margin, but it's not completely done yet. Though with Coppel's hill ability three minutes might be enough to take the win.

Choi and Ignatiev fifth and sixth in the GC at four minutes. The Philips duo of Navardauskas and Van Zandbeek seventh and eight at 4'43 and 4'44. Moazemi and Konovalovas complete the top ten at six minutes, just ahead of Juul-Jensen and Meyer. Brändle thirteenth at 6'43. Anuar Aziz 22nd at 7'39.
