Welcome to the opening stage of the Tour of Britain, we're in the Yorkshire region, going from Leeds to Sheffield. A few big hills along the route, so we'll likely see the puncheurs in action today.
Since we're in Yorkshire, cycleYorkshire is at the front of the peloton. They pulled back all three breakaway attempts before the early intermediate sprint. The reason why is not clear to us, as the bonus seconds there are likely not influential on the GC.
Pirazzi attacks and wins the intermediate sprint by doing that. Malecki, Petilli and Schleck follow in the background. No interest in the sprint from cycleYorkshire or anyone else for that matter.
This attack was brought back as well but the fifth one succeeds:
Pirazzi
Malecki
Vandewalle
They have a gap of 2'30 with 130 kilometers to go.
Oxenhope Moor, a category one climb at 110 kilometers from the line. Pirazzi is the strongest, with Malecki second and Vandewalle third. The gap to the peloton got up to 4 minutes but thanks to the work of Carrefour, ENI and Indosat it's down to 2 again.
Malecki and Vandewalle in trouble on one of the many uncategorized hills. They are nearly caught by the peloton while Pirazzi maintains a reasonable distance.
Pirazzi on his quest to the mountain jersey, taking the points on this second category climb as well. His two breakaway companions are caught, resulting in the domestiques from the teams at the front getting some decent points.
The Italian would be caught on Hole Moss, the next climb from the first category. Cahyadi takes the most points by happening to lead, but that does propel him to first place in the virtual KoM classification thanks to his peloton points on the previous climbs. 52 kilometers to go, including three category two climbs, and 131 riders still in the peloton.
A group has been dropped on the last col, and it contains one major victim: Bystrom. Repsol decides to send literally the entire team back to help. Other riders caught up in the split are Pibernik, Reus, Bernas, Ziesler, Othman and Stuyven.
Michely takes the next mountain sprint, which means he's now in third place at four points from Pirazzi. Cahyadi also picking up four points, now six ahead. Behind him some big names: Costa, Izagirre and Anuar Aziz ready for battle. Group Bystrom at 2'30 with 36 kilometers to go, tough story to get back.
A change in leadership as it's Khalilikhosroshani from Indosat to cross the next sprint first, with ENI nowhere near the front. Coppel now at the front. Another small group had to let go, including Bazhkou, Brändle and Prevar.
Five kilometers to go, only an uphill sprint on Jenkins Road remaining. The front group has been reduced to just 41 riders. Michely returning to the front. Coppel and Anuar Aziz lining up behind. Costa, Izagirre, Ignatiev, Froome, Di Maggio, Juul-Jensen and Bilbao behind.
Palini comes to the front with Coppel on his wheel, as if it was a train on a regular sprint stage. Gougeard does the same for Izagirre, and Michely uses his last energy to help Di Maggio. De Souza for Anuar Aziz, then the soloist Costa and Ignatiev with Froome.
Inside the final kilometer and the uphill section, Palini has done a beautiful lead-out for Coppel but can the Frenchman finish it off and effectively win the race after the first stage.
Palini is so strong that Coppel can't make his way around, in fact Palini has a gap over the rest of the group. Michely somehow still in third place, followed by fellow lead-outs Gougeard and De Souza. The road is quite narrow so the favorites can't really make their way around them.
Anuar Aziz finds a gap with 150 meters to go and blasts past everyone, but can he catch Palini?
100 meters and Di Maggio finds the same exit. Palini still holding on but visibly struggling.
Anuar Aziz takes it on the line! Heartbreak for Palini, who does manage to hold on to second against Di Maggio.
Fourth place for De Souza after helping out Anuar Aziz. Coppel fifth, Froome sixth, Costa seventh. Michely a respectable eight ahead of Costa and an anonymous Meyer. Juul-Jensen and Chérel completing the group which is given at six seconds from the front three.
Then at twelve seconds we find Roux, Pichon, Venter, Izagirre, Pellaud, Waeytens, Bilbao and Moazemi.
Bellis losing 1'44, not the best start for the double-winner. Wondering what all his team's work in the begin was about then.
A group with today's losers at nearly four minutes: Stuyven, Pibernik, Barrio and a few other minor contenders.
Reus, Brändle and Prevar losing 4'30.
But the biggest shock of the day is Bystrom, who loses seven minutes. To make things worse, Duchesne and Levarlet are with him, and Novak is behind. Thus Repsol's GC ambitions are shattered on the first day.
