Grands Prix Cyclistes - Stage 1

Bonjour from sunny Québec City, Québec for the first stage of the Grands Prix Cyclistes. The riders will ride ten laps on the circuit around the city, including some short but vicious climbs. It is essential not to lose time today and be in a favorable position when we head to Montréal.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/02.jpg

A first attempt to form a breakaway:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Rujano
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Taubel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Yzeiraj
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Zekavica

However it is brought back fairly quickly. Apparently there are riders in there who might be considered dangerous.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/03.jpg

The second attempt is more successful though:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Daspuntsag
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Manfred
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Ngandamba
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Rujano
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Taubel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Vila
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Yamamoto
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Yzeiraj
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Zekavica

Indeed, all riders from the first attempt are gone again plus some more. The break was formed more or less accidentally, because this group of riders did not really attack on the Côte du Boulevard des Chutes but simply because those behind them slowed down considerably. They have 1'27 with 171 kilometers to go, wondering if they'll continue or stop.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/04.jpg

Continue it is, but without Rujano who couldn't follow the pace. Eddie Stobart feels responsible for the chase, and keeps the gap around two minutes. They even forced a split, whether intentional or not, with 83 riders on the good side of it. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Anacona, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Othman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Wahyudi most notable names in the second peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/05.jpg

More riders drop from the breakaway: Ngandamba, Taubel, Yzeiraj and Zekavica. The four remaining riders are 1 minute ahead of them, and 2 ahead of the peloton. No KoM or intermediate sprints today or tomorrow, so there is no KoM jersey to be won, and the points classification is only based on the stage results.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/06.jpg

Yamamoto also struggling to keep the pace on the steep Côte de Saint-Gregoire. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Schurter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Taborre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Wallays were briefly the next victims of a split, but quickly recovered. The second peloton is at 1'30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/07.jpg

The second peloton rejoins the first peloton, who is now 2'30 behind the breakaway with 120 kilometers to go. Yamamoto coming back to the front, but that's more a deceleration from the front trio than an acceleration by him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/08.jpg

Two minutes behind, every team with a possible stage contender seems to be participating in the relay: Stobart, ENI, Valio, Equinor, Compal, Campari, Delvaux, BNZ, Cerveceria.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/09.jpg

ENI-MOL really puts the hammer down to catch the breakaway at 40 kilometers from the finish. Schurter was dropped again in the proces, this time together with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Amanuel. 94 riders remain in what now becomes the first group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/10.jpg

Côte de Salaberry, 30 kilometers to go and the peloton is split once more, with a group of 25 riders seperating themselves from the rest:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ben Nasser, Ikibe, Kebede, Meiler, Rocchetti, Rosa
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Haavardsholm, Mahdar, Thill, Zaini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Goncalves, Kadri, Vichot
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Cahyadi, Di Maggio
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Edmondson, Hindley
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Hoelgaard, Kluge
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Kangangi, Teklit
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Cimolai, Meyer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Pibernik

Sauber leads the chase with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Hugentobler. The gap is 50 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/11.jpg

Telia joins Sauber and the two teams manage to close the gap. Just over 1 lap of 25 kilometer remaining, 92 riders together at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/12.jpg

15k and 2 inclines remaining, yet no one tries to get away. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Chérel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Hardy lead the peloton. Another small split occured with Hugentobler on the wrong side again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/13.jpg

Inside the final 10 kilometers and the riders seem to be waiting for the final hill towards the finish line. The group is reduced to 38 riders, with some smaller fraction desperately trying to get back. Most contenders have a helper around them in case of emergency.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/14.jpg

The final turn before the final climb and the riders are battling over who gets to start at the front. Zaini, Teklit, Ben Nasser, Gautier, Di Maggio, Meyer, Edmondson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Vichot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kadri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Hategeka all there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/15.jpg

Zaini comes out on top heading into the final kilometer, with Teklit going after him. Gautier and Ben Nasser in the next positions but not with the same strength as Zaini.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/16.jpg

The Italian has a considerable gap at 500 meters to go. Victory looks imminent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/17.jpg

And indeed, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Tommy Zaini wins the first stage of the Grands Prix Cyclistes in Québec!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier just managed to sneak past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Teklit for second. Ben Nasser crosses the line in fourth. All at eleven seconds from Zaini.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/19.jpg

Pibernik finishes fifth, leading home a group of 20 riders who will be given the same time as the three ahead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Mezgec exceeding all expectations in the uphill sprint to finish sixth! Hoelgaard, Edmondson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Ziesler and Othman complete the top ten. Di Maggio and Meyer finish eleventh and twelfth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Cyclistes/S1/20.jpg

Haavardsholm celebrating as he crosses the line in fifteenth. Vichot and Kadri finish 16th and 17th respectively. Not the dream start for Delvaux, but there's not much time lost. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Geschke a few places behind, looking good if he can deliver in Montréal.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Haas in 27th, leading a group who lost just under a minute. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Serry, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Skjerping, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Hugentobler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Wahyudi also losing time.
