International Österreich Rundfahrt - Stage 7
Vien
Int. Osterreich Rundfahrt – Stage 7

It's the final day of the Tour of Austria, and we're finishing off with a 30 kilometer time trial. Despite its length, huge changes in the TT are not expected however. This ws mainly due to the enormous time gaps in stage 2. This means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Úran seem to be settled for 1st and 2nd.

The most interesting GC battles should be the battle for third between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Denifl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Henao Montoya. As well as the battle for 7th between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Roglic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Monsalve and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Keizer

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Velits seems to be isolated between them, but may still win or lose a spot depending on a good day.

Of course, there's also a stage than can be won. The bookies seem to favor the GC favourites to win this one. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Mullen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Steensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Dees and many other TT specialists are looking to upset them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0015.jpg

The rider to start is already a TT specialist. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_red.png Hamza sets the time to beat at 20'48 at the first checkpoint, and 41'42 at the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Li can't beat it, so it seems to be a good time. He finishes 25 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_red.png Fominykh then. He can't beat Hamza either. 7 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Steensen then. He smashes Hamza's time by 44 seconds and sets a new best time of 40'57.

Also note how it started raining. Though it didn't matter much for Steensen, it seems.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0019.jpg

The weather did seem to matter for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Mullen. He loses 49 seconds on Steensen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0020.jpg

It's now dry again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Janse van Rensburg may benefit from this!

He doesn't. Same time as Mullen, actually.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0021.jpg

Janse van Rensburg's teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Haga however seems to be doing better. Perhaps he's fresher after the mountains.

He's 11 seconds behind Steensen at the first checkpoint.. But can't keep up that pace. +'52 for him.

Outside the camera however, another Minions rider does pretty well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Barton finishes on a provisional second place, 42 seconds behind Steensen!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png De Luna surprised with the 4th time so far. +44.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Rolland then. And he gets soo close! But in the end, he loses 4 seconds on Steensen. Still second though!

His teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Dees can't surprise. 33 seconds behind Steensen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0024.jpg

Time to watch the top 15 riders live then. And first of all: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Pantano Gómez, who gets passed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Garby with over 10 kilometers to go. Expected perhaps, but still a bummer for stage 5's bravest GC rider.

Garby loses a minute on his teammate Steensen. Pantano exactly four.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Berhane has been invisible in this tour, and this won't change today. +2'12.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0027.jpg

So has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Eastman, but he's just been busy doing Eastman things. He did well today, though. +'19 on Steensen, 4th for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0028.jpg

Time for the U25 GC battle then. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Carthy doesn't seem to be able to surprise. '+1'28 on Steensen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0029.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Kudus then... Holy smokes, he only beats Carthy by 3 seconds! But it's close enough, the U25 win is his!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0031.jpg

BOOM! No, not Lars Boom, but his fellow Dutchie pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Keizer beats Steensen's time by 1'39! 39'18 is now the best time. I doubt anyone can beat that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0030.jpg

Alright, time to calm down a little. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Monsalve is the next to finish, and does so-so. 2'43 behind Keizer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0032.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Roglic does a lot better. He finishes in 6th place for now, 2'06 behind Keizer. Monsalve won't pass him now, that's for sure.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0033.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Velits then. As mentioned before he was on a but of an island GC wise. And this will likely stay the same. He beats Roglic by three seconds and is now 6th, 2'03 behind Keizer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0034.jpg

Time for the podium battle then. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Henao Montoya squeezes out every second in the final kilometer and finishes two seconds faster than Velits. So 6th once again, +2'01.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0035.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Denifl does slightly better. 4Th, +1'45. So his 4th place is secured at least, Henao won't pass him...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0036.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Penasa then... Damn, he does worse. He loses 3'14 on Keizer, which means he loses over a minute on Denifl and Henao. We'll have to wait until the official results to see its implications, but he might lose a GC spot or two here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0037.jpg

The top two only have to make sure they don't fall to secure their GC spot. And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Úran safely cruises to second. He loses 1'35 to Keizer but beats Steensen by 4 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0038.jpg

And last but not least, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin steals Úran's second place and “only” loses 46 seconds to Keizer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0039.jpg

Which means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Keizer has won the final stage of the Tour of Austria! Congratulations!

Also, one rider has gone unnoticed, but deserves a major shoutout: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Brandt finishes this stage in 7th!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0040.jpg

And then we're off to the final GC. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Úran met their expectations and finished first and second. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Denifl also secured the “best of the rest”-title in the final stage and steps on the podium on his home race.

Then, the surprises slowly start coming. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Henao Montoya's fourth place may not be one of them, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Penasa's fifth spot certainly is! With this result, he proved what we kinda knew already: Acceleration is also important on mountains. Though it could've been much more for him, as he only feel one second behind Henao on the final stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Velits ended up sixth as expected. Decent, especially when taking his stage win into account. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Keizer then shot up with his dominant TT win and ended up just in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Roglic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Monsalve, who couldn't turn around his rather unimpressive season here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Eastman finishes 10th. Should boost his team's morale for the Tour of America a little.

Kudus (11th) certainly won't be happy with his final rank... Carthy (12th), Garby (13th), Berhane (15h) and Duarte (16th) could've done better, too. Senni however, will be happy with his 14th place.

Talansky disappoints even harder with 18th. Nazaret couldn't impress either and finishes 19th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0041.jpg

The top 4 of the GC is also the top 4 of the points jersey. Shows how dominant Pluchkin and Úran have been.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0042.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_red.png Koumpetsos wins the KoM jersey in front of the GC winners. A result that certainly puts a smile on this completely independant reporter's face.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0043.jpg

And as announced, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Kudus wins the U25 jersey by 8 seconds over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Carthy. At least that's something for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0044.jpg

And lastly, Indosat snatches the team GC from Popo4ever, who had been leading since day 1.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/Austria/7/PCM0045.jpg

And that's it for the coverage of the International Österreich Rundfahrt! We've seen some very expected stages, with Pluchkin proving to be the best GC rider of the PCT once again. What was your favourite moment? Let us know in the comments! See you next year!
