Baltic Chain Tour - Stage 3
Vien
Baltic Chain Tour – Stage 3

Welcome back to the Baltic Chain Tour! After yesterday's hectic sprint, in which pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb took the stage win and the leader's jersey, a lot of teams will be in for their final chance to join the GC battle.

This stage around Hanko is a bit longer: 201 kilometers. This means stamina may play a bigger role this time. This means the bookies also changed the favourites slightly: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb is still the one to beat, in front of yesterday's 11th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ewan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish. Followed by quite a few of yesterday's biggest disappointments!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0055.jpg

First break of the day attempt by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xwa.png Fankhauser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Kochetkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Paez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0056.jpg

No one seems to be interested in countering. Meanwhile, Iberia (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden) and Novatek are trying to control the pace.

5 minutes with 150 kilometres to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0057.jpg

With 80 kilometers to go, the biggest news of the day is that it's now raining. Not that the riders care too much, as their extremely modern luxury equipment prevents them from falling. But it's still quite uncomfortable.

Still 5 minutes!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0058.jpg

A (dry) 25 kilometres to go, and there seem to be crosswinds! The peloton has broken into two. All sprinters are positioned quite well, but one rider who won't be too happy with this is U25 leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Zepuntke: He's very far behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0059.jpg

BOOM, the peloton splits into two once again, and now bigger names are involved! Including:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Roelandts
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Nizzolo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Kruopis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xfc.png Kip
And green jersey wearer pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Matthews.

They are officially 49 seconds behind the peloton. The leading three are still 50 seconds ahead, but are about to get swallowed up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0060.jpg

7 kilometres to go and it started raining again (why am I so obsessed with this?). We can now see that the aforementioned riders won't be coming back to fight for the stage win. All they can hope is to keep a good pace so that they won't lose any time now. What a shocker.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0061.jpg

6 kilometres to go and we can see that catching the break is still the pack's main priority. Carrefour and Kraftwerk however are also setting up a very impressive train for their leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0062.jpg

Most other sprinters are all alone behind them. This doesn't count for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss, who is struggling to get to the front of the pack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Van Asbroeck is even further behind...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0063.jpg

3 kilometers to go and we can see that Carrefour is now leading the peloton. Actually they are the only one with a very solid sprint train! Will this be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero's day?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0064.jpg

Once again the positioning behind them is a complete mess, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ewan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Holloway and especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Guerao are losing contact with the top 10 and are going to struggle to get a good result today. It's more of a survival-of-the-fittest-race than a clear sprinter race so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0065.jpg

2 kilometers to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Feiereisen is about to take over the leadout from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Bercz. Behind them the order is as follows:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Drapac
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Coutinho
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Rowe
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Ulanowski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Lander

Degenkolb does have teammates, but they are awkwardly positioned to the left. Behind them, it's Kraftwerk's train desperately trying to get back up front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0066.jpg

Degenkolb's train seems to be back together and it's Carrefour vs Iberia now! On the left, it's Drapac trying to fight them, but it'll be hard for him to keep up this pace alone for much longer.

On the right it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Maikin working for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish, but the latter has lost his wheel...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0067.jpg

Under the red kite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero awkwardly ignores his own leadout and decides to choose pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Maikin's wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Drapac seems to take a gamble and go for a very long sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado is next to him, trying to lead out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0069.jpg

500 metres to go and it's still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Drapac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado going strong! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Coutinho and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Rowe seem to be the only ones who could still fancy their chance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0070.jpg

300 metres to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado cracks but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Drapac seems to be unstoppable! But the finish is still so, so far away.... Can he hang on for a massive upset?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0071.jpg

Hell yeah! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Damion Drapac decided it was time for his annual surprising victory here in the Baltic region! Congratulations to him and his Minions!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb finishes second. He went too late, but it's a good result for him, GC-wise.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0072.jpg

Quite a while behind them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Rowe finishes third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero couldn't turn his great train into a good result. He finishes 4th, just in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Lander and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Coutinho, who ended up getting past just before the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish managed to pass his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Maikin. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Holloway complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0073.jpg

What's even more important than the minor placings though is the riders who lost time today. The “groupe pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Roelandts” did everything they could to now get awarded a time gap. But they did. 2'46 for them, and only a breakaway can make them get a good GC result now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0074.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Zepuntke finishes a minute behind them. He doesn't seem to care much about losing his U25 jersey. But at least his teammate won the stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Baltic/3/PCM0075.jpg

No podium sadly due to a crash, so we have to look at the results below to see this stage's implications on the GC. And then we can see that Degenkolb now easily leads this tour, in front of Rowe and Cavendish. Drapac heavily benefits from today's stage win and finds himself in 4th.

Meanwhile, Degenkolb now also leads the point classification, and Ewan, despite his poor results, is now the holder of the U25 jersey.

Wow, it's been quite a day... Somehow I hope for a more “normal” stage tomorrow to calm down a bit. But my cycling heart wants more action like this! We'll see how it works out! Have a nice day!
