the so-so: the system was stupid
the bad: we're back to a stone age system that will be worse in the long term.
the good: there is none. cycling is screwed

PAU, France, July 15 (Reuters) - All ProTour teams are to leave the International Cycling Union’s elite series, the 17 teams said on Tuesday. “It has been decided unanimously not to renew the ProTour licences for the 2009 season,” the teams said in a joint statement.
The ProTour, which started in 2005 under the jurisdiction of the UCI, guaranteed the top teams a place in the leading races. |

What about the teams who already has a license for 2009? Are they leaving too? (I presume so)

So what exactly will be the point of racing if there will be no ProTour? There's nothing to aim for, no rankings, no sense of acheivement. Cycling will just turn into an activity rather than a sport. Without ProTour there will be no sense of competition...

This leaves two issues:
What top level championship can we have now? The ProTour have been tried and found too hard, does this mean we will go back to the World Cup or wont there simply be a championship?
And, what are we gonna call PCM now? I mean, it became PRO Cycling Manager when the ProTour started. No ProTour no Pro?

It's time to turn back to Trade Teams, as it was when the World Cup was set up in the early nineties... |

I wouldn't be surprised if the thought of racing in Russia and the added cost of doing so has made the teams practically throw up. Then the invitation to the Worlds View Challenge possibly did it all in.
That of course on top of everything else. |

I don't think this is a good thing.
UCI had its problems... but the Pro Tour was a good idea. ASO and UCI's feud pretty much killed it... but that doesn't mean the idea was bad.
I'm not sure if I'm any happier with ASO largely calling the shots

I hope the "new ProTour" will have more teams than 20 or 22
Garmin deserves a PT place also Barloworld
I think 24 or 26 PT Teams would be good , so the teams are looking for good riders and that will result in a hard concurrence
Also the 2005 PT Calendar wasn´t enough
The Peace Race for example is dead thank of the PT , no good stat = not much interest = no sponsor = no race
I hope some small races like the Henninger Turm will be added and the Organisators of the races will invite the teams , not a system (like at the PT) |

You really can't have it both ways.
Either you have a series of races that can admit or deny admission to whoever they want... or you have a "league" in which all members of the league have a right to take part in all the races offered.
This may be a bad analogy for you european folks... but Nascar is probably the model cycling should follow.
The races pay to be part of Nascar. Each race counts toward the championship... but teams (instead of individual cars) are not required to take part (but they've payed for the right). Wildcards can be invited by the race to their hearts content.
Nascar is very popular in the US.
The alternative is to turn into what running is (road racing... not track). You have a few "big" races that people pay attention to (Boston Marathon, NY Marathon), then you have a few races of local or regional interest (Peachtree Road Race). Other than that nobody pays any attention at all to the sport. The races are in control in that scenario.
The races controlling things simply isn't good for cycling... not if you want to see it grow. |

the ProTour was a bad idea because it gave UCI too much power, the UCI decided which teams raced which races. Also it forced teams like Euskaltel and Saunier Duval to ride races like the Paris - Roubaix, a race where they've got absolutely nothing to do in. |

I just read on a Norwegian cycling page that the Pro Tour might survive, but only if they change rules and structure. |

Are you kidding me. Now the race organizers have to much power [cough]ASO[/cough] that means that next year Sanier Duval wont be able to race in a lot of races and ASO will have too much power.
