Tour of Bulgaria – Stage 4

If you're bored of all the stereotypical mountain stages on the calendar, you've come to the right adress. Because today, the peloton of the Tour of Bulgaria will race a 74 (!)-kilometre stage from Sofia to Zlatitsa. Apart from the short length, there are also three hills that can't be underestimated, and the final few kilometres are downhill. With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Kiserlovski in the lead, we can expect super high top speeds to be reached there for sure.

Thee scenarios are the most likely for this stage:

1 – We will see a mass sprint. If so, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Ulanowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Carsi are the favourites by a long shot.

2 – The hills will make these sprinters drop and slightly more complete sprinters will get a shot at victory. In this case, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbr.png Brus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Krasnov should have a good shot at winning!

3 – A breakaway will win. Not that hard to think, with this type of stage being so unknown to the peloton.

Right from the start, five riders try to get away from the bunch:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Mestric (with a hella sweet moustasche)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Helme
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0cpl.png Velits
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Wirtgen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Zaraliev.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0003.jpg

Right as I was about to confirm them as break of the day, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbp.png Coronel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbo.png De Decker try to make a jump.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0004.jpg

They make it to the breakaway, and with 50 kilometres to go, the breakaway can now safely be confirmed:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Mestric
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Helme
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Velits
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Wirtgen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Zaraliev
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbp.png Coronel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbo.png De Decker.

2'35 for them. Quite a lot, given the length of this stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0005.jpg

It's BNZ and Bianchi trying to reel them in. No sign of Andorra or other GC teams chasing at the front, with no dangerous GC riders in the break. This could be good news for the breakaway riders.

2'15, 43 kilometres to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0006.jpg

2'22 with 21 kilometres to go, and BNZ has given up already. This is going to be one for the break!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0007.jpg

Time to focus on the breakaway then. No one decided to attack on the final mountain of the day. The 12 flat or downhill kilometres after the climb must've scared them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0008.jpg

Some drama at the pack though, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbr.png Herrada has a flat tyre!pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbr.png Conti is waiting for him. He has 1,5 minutes to make up with 11 kilometres to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0009.jpg

First attack by the breakaway with 4 kilometres to go, and it's quite an explosive one by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Wirtgen! The PCT rider is trying to give his CT and amateur companions a taste of his talent!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Velits and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Zaraliev try to respond. The others are crawling back more slowly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0011.jpg

Though it seems like Wirtgen is gone! 12 seconds over Zaraliev and Velits, who are counted as a group, though Zaraliev seems to be the only one with power left in his legs. Can he close this gap with 1,5 kilometres to go?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0012.jpg

Not even close! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Wirtgen wins the fourth stage of the Tour of Bulgaria, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Zaraliev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Velits! I doubt breakway wins will be common for him in the future, so this wone will certainly be one to remember. A good choice by CycleYorkshire to let him develop here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0013.jpg

Coronel gets fourth and almost even catches Velits. Seems like he had a lot left in the tank. He finishes in front of Helme, De Decker and Mestric.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0014.jpg

2,5 minutes later, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Carsi easily wins the bunch sprint for 9th, helped by a 3-man BNZ sprint train. Behind them, we can see some breaks in the peloton... Will we see any time gaps?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0015.jpg

If so, that would be terrible news for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbr.png Herrada, as he's only just gotten back contact with the peloton. And also for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Topchanyuk (GC #23), as he's only a few positions ahead...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0016.jpg

Good news for them though, as no time gaps are being given! That means a few more teams would enjoy watching pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Wirtgen on the podium. He also moves up to second in the points jersey classification, but GC-wise, nothing has changed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/4/PCM0017.jpg

And that ends the coverage of the fourth stage of the Tour of Bulgaria! Tomorrow features another mountain stage. Knowing how different stages 1 and 3 went, it's a hard one predict. But a lot of disappointing favourites will be looking to move up the rankings, while the surprises are looking to consolidate. So tune in for more exciting racing tomorrow!
