Tour of Bulgaria - Stage 1
Vien
Tour of Bulgaria – Stage 1

Finally, after yesterday's preview, it's time for our riders to start the Tour of Bulgaria! And what a treat to start with: 189 kilometres from Troyan to Ezereto Poprok, with three major mountains to climb.

Today's favourites to take the stage and leader's jersey are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Pomoshnikov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Kiserlovski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Ratiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png König. Behind them, a large group of riders hoping for an upset. Especially Pomoshnikov's racing will be interesting: Due to him having the worst time trial ability of the four top favourites, he will have to attempt to make up time in the mountains. Will he try to get a lead already today?

The thought of a leader jersey, as well as the many KoM points being handed out today, should attract the attention of a lot of riders who would want to join the breakway. The first main attempt was made by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Ford, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbo.png Lindau and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbp.png Rachid.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0003.jpg

Though interestingly, not a single attack follows. This means the three get over the first climb with a 1'56 lead, in this order: Lindau 16 – Rachid 12 – Ford 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0004.jpg

However, the reason for the lack of attacks may be the peloton's pace. As over the top of the mountain, a lot of riders are already minutes behind. On the very rear of the race, 5 minutes behind the peloton already is a group with some prominent time trialists and sprinters: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Kovalev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Johansson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Carsi.

Tough day for them for sure!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0005.jpg

Lindau wins the second climb too, though this was just a cat 3 climb. Ford gets second, Rachid third this time. 4 minutes for them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0006.jpg

Meanwhile the peloton, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Zaraliev, gets slower and slower. This allows everyone to join them back again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0007.jpg

The peloton sets a high pace on the second climb, then. Mainly thanks to Andorra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Rujano. The leaders have already almost been swollen up. Thankfully for them though, they last until the top, giving Lindau another 16 points for the KoM ranking. Anything can still happen, but it looks like the jersey will be his!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0008.jpg

Over the top, only 58 riders remain in the peloton. Two riders who should be there based on their stats are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbp.png Kulhavy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Woods. Saving themselves for an attack in a later stage perhaps?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0009.jpg

Onto the start of the final climb, then. 12 kilometres to go. It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Fumic setting the steady pace his leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Ratiy likes so much. Who is going to attack first?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0010.jpg

5 kilometres and all I can say is... No one? All favourites are positioned greatly, surely someone would want to make a move?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0011.jpg

Two kilometres, and are we looking at some sort of weird mass sprint? I guess this race has to be treated that way... Then leadout pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Hirschlein has put pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Kiserlovski in pole position. Behind them, Banco de Bogota has four riders with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Parra Bustamente on the left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0012.jpg

No top favourites in trouble, though of the “big four”, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png König is positioned the worst. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Panayotov is not far in front of him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0013.jpg

Even further behind is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Medvedev, who seems a little bit in panic about it. He'll hope there won't be any time gaps today, something that is shockingly possible!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0014.jpg

One kilometre to go and Hirschlein and Kiserlovski now have a gap! Pomoshnikov seems to be the only one able to bridge this gap – are we looking at a 1-2 for Andorra maybe?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0015.jpg

500 metres to go, Hirschlein cracks and now blocks Kiserlovski from finishing the job!!! This now opens a lot of opportunities for the riders on the left, and look who we have there: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Lehtinen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png König!

Pomoshnikov, Parra Bustamente and Panatoyov seems to have a chance at victory too..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0016.jpg

200 metres, Lehtinen is still ahead! Are we getting a 1-2 for Valio then?! They have to be careful, because Panatoyov is storming up too!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0017.jpg

Incredible! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Lehtinen takes the first stage of the Tour of Bulgaria in front of his teammate König! What a start for Valio!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Panayotov takes third in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Kiserlovski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Pomoshnikov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0019.jpg

Banco de Bogota's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Sepulveda takes 6th in front of his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Parra Bustamente. A very interesting result for Sepulveda, giving his TT abilities. We might see him in the leader's jersey after tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0020.jpg

Lastly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Ratiy finishes with a disappointing 17th place. Though no time lost, so still enough opportinities to improve his GC.

His teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Diaz finishes even further behind, 26th, + '44 ...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0021.jpg

Off to the GC then. 17 riders with the same time, though Lehtinen is obviosuly the leader due to the bonification seconds given. Also, all riders finished within the time limit, so we'll get a full lineup for the TT tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0022.jpg

Lindau gets the KoM jersey, though it's just two points in front of Lehtinen. This likely means Lehtinen got some points on the KoM sprints from the pack, too. Sorry I missed it!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/Bulgaria/1/PCM0023.jpg

That's all for today. See you tomorrow to find out who wins the TT, and who will wear the leader's jersey in the next mountain stage.
