Haßfurt hosts the final stage of the Bayern Rundfahrt. 39 kilometers around town, an individual time trial to decide the winner.
Renäng with the benchmark: 52 minutes and 40 seconds.
Postlberger twelve seconds slower at the split, 26 at the finish.
Mottin thirteen seconds slower at the split, 31 at the finish. Renäng might actually have set a very high bar here.
Reigning champion and teammate Laizer does not replicate his performance last year. +46 for provisional fourth.
Robert 30 seconds behind Renäng, being the third best rider so far.
Michael Ford disappointed on the first time trial and does so again today. +1'02, not even a stage top thirty and beaten by William Ford as well.
After all these named failed to beat Renäng, you'd expect a Richardson to lose time as well? Nope! Two seconds faster at the intermediate! Unfortunately, he lost momentum in the final phase to go seven seconds down on Renäng, but enough for a virtual second place.
Sergent slots in behind both men at 16 seconds.
But Schädlich ends the Swede's dream of a stage win. He's already 13 seconds up on his time at the halfway mark, and posts the new best time: 52'22.
His reign doesn't last long, as Viviani bumps that to 51'52, half a minute faster!
A few outsiders following in rapid succession:
Stannard +1'11.
Kovalev +1'39.
Li +1'12.
Fominykh +1'39
Tennant +1'09
Marchewka +1'46
Even Zmorka struggles to reach Viviani's time. He's 14 seconds down at the checkpoint, manages to recover some time in the second part but not enough. +6, second place so far.
Reus just over two minutes down in another forgettable performance.
Slightly better for teammate Martin, +1'12 for a virtual tenth place.
Cornu 35 seconds slower, 5 seconds away from the virtual podium.
Rolland +1'20, not too bad.
While the riders continue to cross the line, the GC contenders make their way to the start. Here are the gaps before today:
8 Jerome Coppel Carrefour - ESPN + 1'35 7 Yevgeni Nepomnyachsniy Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff + 1'19 6 Sergio Luis Henao Montoya Philips - Continental + 38 5 Ryan Eastman Azteca-NBCSN + 27 4 Chen Shikai Meiji - JR East + 27 3 Fabio Duarte Novatek-Panarmenian.net + 24 2 Milos Borisavljevic Euskaltel - Elior + 13 1 Martijn Keizer Indosat Ooredoo - ANZ 9h26'29
Coppel lost the jersey yesterday, but is still close in the GC. He needs 1'35 on Keizer to win. He is also the main favourite for the stage win, demonstrating that by diving four seconds under Viviani's time at the split.
Up next is Nepomnyachsniy, 35 seconds down at the split which is more than the 16 he led over Coppel in the GC.
Henao Montoya with the expected drop, already 1'28 down on Coppel at the checkpoint and fearing for his top ten maybe.
Eastman 56 seconds down halfway. He can only lose 12 seconds in the second part, else Coppel moves past him as well.
Shikai with the exact same time as Eastman and also the exact same time as Eastman at the checkpoint. Literally inseparable.
Duarte +1'04, which means he's behind Eastman and Shikai and only seven seconds ahead of Coppel.
Can young Borisavljevic handle the pressure? 1'04 at the split, same time as Duarte. Marginally ahead of Eastman/Shikai, and still 18 seconds to Coppel.
Keizer sixteen seconds down to Coppel at the checkpoint. He has to crash or go in the wrong direction to lose the race here.
Virtual GC:
1 Keizer 2 Borisavljevic + 1'01 3 Shikai + 1'07 4 Eastman + 1'07 5 Duarte + 1'12 6 Coppel + 1'19 7 Nepomnyachsniy + 1'38 8 Henao Montoya + 1'50
The top twenty now make their way to the finish line:
20 Stefan Kung Generali - EDF + 4'10 19 Jakub Novak Repsol - Netflix + 4'06 18 Serghei Tvetcov cycleYorkshire + 3'54 17 Stefan Denifl SPAR - Shimano - SCG + 3'47 16 Lawrence Warbasse Andorra Project - InGamba + 3'28
Kung +1'43, might move him up a few places from 20th in the GC
Novak 1 second slower than Küng, but he had a four-second advantage in the GC so he stays ahead.
Tvetcov five seconds faster than Küng, also defending his GC position.
Denifl 2'31, dropping behind the three aforementioned riders.
Even worse performance from GC 16th Warbasse (+2'53), being passed by the four aforementioned riders.
Fifteen riders remaining:
15 Kristjan Koren Generali - EDF + 3'15 14 Magno Nazaret Euskaltel - Elior + 2'48 13 Tim Dees Generali - EDF + 2'35 12 Jorge Abreu Banco de Bogota + 2'33 11 Christian Meier Azteca-NBCSN s.t. 10 Ki Ho Choi Meiji - JR East s.t. 9 Matthias Brändle SPAR - Shimano - SCG + 1'45
Koren +1'37. Had hoped for a better stage result actually, but it's enough to defend his GC position.
He even climbs to 14th as Nazaret (+3'59) goes down the order to outside the top twenty.
He was passed by Dees on the stage. The Dutchman posts the fifth time so far at only 43 seconds from Viviani. Top ten in the GC might be possible.
Abreu and Meier were dead even going into the stage, but the Canadian is three seconds faster today (+2'14 versus +2'11). Both are overtaken by Dees in the GC though.
Choi +1'43, also falling behind Dees but staying ahead of Meier and Abreu.
Brändle +1'03 at the finish. Eight place so far today and the best GC time amongst the finishers.
But here comes Coppel for what will likely be the winning time: 51'46, six seconds faster than Viviani. Now we wait what else it will bring him.
We already established he beat Nepomnyachsniy halfway, the confirmation coming at the finish line. +1'12 is just outside the stage top ten but good enough to keep Brändle behind in the GC.
Henao Montoya +2'59, thus dropping behind Nepomnyachsniy, Brändle and Dees in the GC.
Eastman +1'53. 45 seconds behind Coppel in the GC, virtual second.
And would you believe it, Shikai also +1'53. Milliseconds will decide who finishes ahead in the GC. The jury needs to calculate the exact finishing time, correcting for possible chronometric imperfections.
+2'08 for Duarte. It's a close affair with Nepomnyachsniy, settled by only 1 second in the Kazakh's favor. Thus the Colombian drops four places in the GC, behind Coppel, Eastman and Shikai.
Borisavljevic was only a few seconds ahead of Eastman/Shikai at the split and could not hold on to his advantage. +2'11 drops him to fifth in the GC, four seconds behind the duo. The young Serb does win the youth classification, so he can look back on a successful race.
And right behind him is Keizer. He made sure he stayed upright and took the correct turns. +29 to Coppel on the stage for fourth place, which is well within the margin he could lose. Your 2018 Bayern Rundfahrt General Classification Winner: Martijn Keizer!
Stage win goes to Jerome Coppel, with Viviani and Zmorka completing the top three. The Frenchman also becomes runner-up in the GC and the winner of the points classification. Camargo wins the KoM classification and Generali takes the teams classification on the final day.
Third place is awarded to Shikai by milliseconds over Eastman. Borisavljevic fifth, ahead of Nepomnyachsniy, Duarte, Brändle and Dees. Henao Montoya completes the top ten.
