We head to the Bavarian Alps today for a 168-kilometer long stage from Freilassing to Reit im Winkel. Finish at the Winkelmoos-Alm ski resort, with a short climb at the end. Question is: can the mountain specialists gain enough time on the time trialist ahead of tomorrow's deciding time trial?
Eleven riders form the morning breakaway:
Camargo
Kulhavy
Dzhus
McKenna
Krizek
Chhetri
Paulus
Molano
Fankhauser
Mai
Solinski (KoM leader)
Not so good news for the KoM leader, as he is dropped on an early, uncategorized hill together with Molano and Fankhauser. The peloton keeps things tight, the gap is 1'30 at the moment.
And so we are left with eight riders in the breakaway. Camargo wins the intermediate sprint ahead of Mai and Paulus. Solinski/Fankhauser/Molano were caught by the peloton, who slowed down afterwards and allowed the gap to increase.
16 points on the first category climb Hochschwarzeck. Camargo takes them ahead of Paulus, the only two who seem interested. Kulhavy, Dzhus, Chhetri, Mai and Krizek take the remaining points. The peloton picked up the pace again at the hands of Novatek, Indosat and Carrefour, the gap being 2'30. Only 89 riders remain in the peloton, with Coppel (leader), Shikai (sixth) and Cornu (ninth) from the GC top ten present.
McKenna couldn't follow the pace in the breakaway and dropped back, still being somewhere between E1 and the peloton, which is down to three minutes again. Krizek takes the intermediate sprint while Azteca joins in on the chase.
Kulhavy takes the second KoM for ten points, in front of Mai, Camargo, Chhetri and Dzhus. This makes Camargo the virtual KoM leader with 22 points, followed by Kulhavy and Solinski at 20. The last KoM points will be given at the finish, where there are 16 available for the winner. McKenna was caught and the gap is reduced to 1'30. Unlikely we'll see a breakaway victory today. 41 kilometers to go.
The third and final intermediate sprint at 24 kilometers from the finish is won by Chhetri. The gap remained constant for the last few kilometers, still at 1'30. Kraftwerk, Indosat and Carrefour with lead in the peloton, where Signorini is the most notable rider dropped. So no support for Keizer from him.
15 kilometers to go, the prelude to the final climb. The road goes slightly uphill but the real climb is yet to start. Indosat nearly caught the breakaway, where Kulhavy and Krizek try to postpone the inevitable and attack.
The real climb starts at 9 kilometers from the finish. Kulhavy leads by 21 seconds over Krizek and 1'09 to the peloton, the other five former members of the breakaway caught. Coppel near the front of the peloton, and looking quite good actually.
Here we go! Henao Montoya and Nazaret, two of the riders with the worse time trial, attack early on the climb, hoping to gain a lot of time this way.
At 5k the duo passes Kulhavy. Anacona and Elissonde are the first to counter-attack and have a small gap over the peloton, with Coppel still amongst the front. Krizek has been caught.
Duarte is next to attack, and passes Anacona and Elissonde with ease. Eastman follows and the duo goes in pursuit of Henao/Nazaret. Koren leads the peloton with Coppel in second place and Keizer in third.
Kulhavy is caught. Keizer attacks together with Nepomnyachsniy, and Borisavljevic moves up in the background as well. Coppel now in the middle of the pack.
Back at the front, Henao drops Nazaret and goes solo. Duarte and Eastman can see them, but they're still a long stretch behind.
Coppel breaks. The Frenchman will definitely lose the jersey, but if he limits his loss he might be in for a good GC classification. Shikai, Denifl and Brändle waited a long time but are now attacking, to form a short-lasting sixtet with Anacona, Elissonde and Kulhavy.
Final kilometer for Henao Montoya. 28 seconds to Nazaret, 52 seconds to Duarte, 1'05 to Eastman, 1'44 to Keizer/Nepomnyachsniy/Borisavljevic, 2'12 to Shikai/Denifl/Brändle and 2'50 to the peloton.
Sergio Luis Henao Montoya wins on the Winkelmoos-Alm and does exactly what he has to do, gain time on the mountain stage to compensate for his weak time trials. He needs 3'51 to Coppel and 2'51 to Keizer to take the leaders jersey.
Good result for Nazaret, who came just short of the stage win. 32 seconds to Henao in the end. The gap to the riders behind is smaller though, so he won't rise in the general classification as much as he might have wanted.
Duarte completes the podium at 53 seconds. Eastman arrives at 1'09. The Colombian passed the American in the GC by three seconds. Henao fourteen seconds behind his countryman in the GC.
Keizer, Nepomnyachsniy and Borisavljevic at 1'53. The Dutchman is the new GC leader. Borisavljevic is now the surprising second at 13 seconds, and also the leader in the youth classification. Nepomnyachsniy jumps to seventh place.
Brändle, Denifl and Shikai complete the stage top ten. 2'35 the difference to Henao. Shikai is now fourth in the GC in the same time as Eastman. Henao sixth. Brändle also moves inside the top ten, while Denifl moves just inside the top twenty.
Elissonde crosses the line in eleventh place. The next group at 3'34 contains Dees, Choi, Tvetcov, Anacona, Ndayisenga and Pantano Gómez. Choi now tenth in the GC, in the same time as Abreu and Meier who were in the groups behind.
Coppel finishes the stage in 28th place at 4'28. Good climb for the Frenchman, who only drops to eight in the GC. 1'35 on Keizer might be a bit too much but he's well in the race for a GC podium.
No KoM sprints remaining this race, so Camargo is declared King of the Mountain ahead of Kulhavy and Solinski.
