Tour de San Luis - Stage 8
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/01.jpg

The eight and final stage takes us back to the city of San Luis for some relatively flat local laps. It is very unlikely the GC will see any change today but I don't want to jinx pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer. The King of the Mountains title is still up for grabs, with six, four and two points available on the only climb early on in the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/02.jpg

Eight kilometers to the mountain sprint, a breakaway already assembles a 2'49 lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Cominelli
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Schlegel

None of the protagonists in the mountains classification present, this might very well end in an anticlimax.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/03.jpg

Gradek, Taborre and Gogl take the points without challenge. This means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xrs.png Kaislavuo is the 2018 Tour de San Luis King of the Mountains.

There would be no battles for the intermediate sprints along the road as well. Cominelli and Gogl managed to win them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/04.jpg

Sauber, ENI and Eddie Stobart do most of the work for their sprinters. Swisslion has an added component in the threat of Eriksson, who is 4'34 behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Pibernik in the youth classification, though the gap never reached that far. Currently it's around 2'30 with 45 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/05.jpg

15k to go and the gap is still 1'30, will the sprinter teams miscalculate again, like they did on the second stage? Sauber does it absolute best by putting nearly every rider at the front to chase the breakaway, who might smell a success today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/06.jpg

Five kilometers and the breakaway is still out front, it looks increasingly more likely we will see another breakaway victory. Question remains: will the breakaway sprint amongst themselves or will we see attacks and pursuits?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/07.jpg

Gradek tries his luck with four kilometers to go. The others look at each other, and the Pole has a small gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/08.jpg

Taborre goes after him a few hundred meters later. The others simply don't have the strength or are playing a risky strategical game, with the peloton also closing in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/09.jpg

Speaking of the peloton, here is the formation of the sprint trains:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Hänninen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier

Both Meyer and Gautier mixing it in there, the difference between the two in the points classification is just two points in the former's favor. It depends on (parts of) the break being caught if they can battle for points today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/10.jpg

Taborre and Gradek reunite under the flag for the final kilometer. We're heading towards a sprint-à-deux.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/11.jpg

Virtually nothing separating the two.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/12.jpg

But with a final push of the bike pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Fabio Taborre takes the win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Gradek has to settle for second place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Blums sprints to third in the group behind, which managed to stay ahead of the peloton. Eriksson fourth, Gogl fifth, Cominelli sixth, Aguirre seventh, Schlegel eight and Yordsuwan ninth. No gap given to the two leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/14.jpg

And the peloton also receives the same time. Colbrelli wins the sprint for tenth place ahead of Von Hoff, Thorsen, Vanoverschelde and Bogdanovics.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S8/15.jpg

Three jersey weares crossing the line simultaniously. First pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xrs.png Jesse Kaislavuo who wins the mountain classification, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Travis Meyer who wins the general classification and the points classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier with second place in both the general and the points classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Luka Pibernik is the best young rider, BNZ the best team.
