The last hilly stage of the race, tomorrow should normally be a formality. Meyer goes into the stage as GC leader, 51 seconds ahead of Vanendert and Gautier.
For once the first breakaway immediately becomes the definitive composition:
Areruya (2nd KoM, 24 pts)
Mundle
Panayotov
Puusepp
Anguilet
Jim
Fankhauser
Michely
Areruya needs eight points to overtake Kaislavuo in the KoM classification, with a maximum of 30 points available on five climbs.
Puusepp throws a spanner in the works by taking the first KoM sprint ahead of Jim and Michely. No points for Areruya.
Koch and Seibeb attack from the peloton in an attempt to bridge the gap. The German is third in the KoM with 14 points, while the Namibian is 27th in the GC at 5'41.
The duo succeeds in its mission, increasing the number of riders in the breakaway to ten. The gap is 3'39 with 110 kilometers to go, Equinor and Campari setting up the chase.
Michely undoubtedly the strongest at the second mountain sprint of the day. Koch seconds, Areruya third. 90 kilometers to go and the gap increased to seven minutes, therefore Seibeb is virtually in the green leader's jersey.
Another climb and this time Koch wins it by a huge margin ahead of Michely and Areruya. This leads us to the following virtual standings:
Kaislavuo32 Areruya28 Koch24
The gap dropped back to under 5 minutes with 75 kilometers to go. Meyer back on top of the GC.
Fast forward to the next mountain sprint, where Koch was leading until 200 meters to go before his legs simply refused to cooperate any longer. Michely and Seibeb manage to overtake him before the line. No points for Areruya, who just needs a first or second place at the final KoM (excluding points at the finish) to take the jersey.
Taborre with an attack at 35 kilometers to go, when the gap to the leading ten has been reduced to 2'30.
The final KoM of the day provided a similar story as the last one. Koch attacked but used too much energy early on. Michely and Seibeb overtaking him, with Koch just able to take third. Areruya too weak to participate. Kaislavuo will enter the final stage in the KoM jersey four points ahead of Areruya and Koch. There is only one mountain sprint tomorrow, worth six points. Michely fourth with 24 points, starting his assault too late.
The gap is now under a minute in the final ten kilometers thanks to the hard work of Eddie Stobart, Valio and Compal. Taborre has been caught, as has Mundle who couldn't follow the pace of his breakaway companions anymore.
Gautier, Ben Nasser and Zaini on the attack with 8k to go!
Gautier made it to E1, where Areruya has been dropped. Ben Nasser and Zaini are caught by a chasing group at 44 seconds:
Chérel
Meyer
Bugge
Teklit
Edmondson
Vanendert
Martinez
The remainders of the peloton a further 32 seconds back.
The breakaway is caught by the group behind, but Gautier carries on and has 20 seconds or so to this group. Hugentobler and Vichot try to bridge to this group from the group even further behind.
Edmondson, Meyer and Bugge try to take back Gautier. 25 seconds is the gap with 1500 meters to go.
Bugge blew himself up, but his teammate Teklit managed to join the pursuit together with Zaini. Gautier still in the lead inside the final kilometer, with Meyer doing the dirty work himself.
Cyril Gautier wins the seventh stage of the Tour de San Luis!
Meyer with a strong finish, +11 and and able to fend off the GC threat from Gautier. The Australian leads the general classification going into the final stage with Gautier at 32 seconds, but a miracle needs to happen if that's going to change.
Edmondson third on the stage ahead of Teklit and Zaini, 20 seconds from Gautier. With Vanendert not in the group, the Brit needs 27 seconds to take the final spot on the GC podium.
A very large group including most of the remaining top GC riders arrives at 1'16, so Edmondson definitely has his third place. Mygind with the best sprint for sixth place ahead of Kadri, Serry, Simon and Othman. Rabitsch eleventh, Seibeb best from the break in twelfth, then Hategeka, youth leader Pibernik and an underwhelming Ben Nasser.
Vanendert in the back of this group and lucky not to lose extra time due to splits, only finishing in 23rd place. He lost third place but just defends fourth place. Zaini and Teklit jump over Ben Nasser, who drops to seventh.
The biggest loser of the today is Bazhkou though, who is a group behind and lost 1'31. As a result he lost his eight place to Gunman, ninth to Rabitsch, tenth to Hategeka, eleventh to Simon and twelfth to Haas.
