Tour de San Luis - Stage 6
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/01.jpg

La Toma hosts the start of the sixth stage of the Tour de San Luis. The finish lays at the top of the Filo Sierras Comechingones, a very tough 16-kilometer climb à 7.8%. Some riders lost their place yesterday on the individual time trial, but hope to take back that time today. For other riders it's just a matter of survival.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/02.jpg

The first attempt consists of De Leon, Jim, Juodvalkis, Kangangi, Koch, Mancuso, Matte and Wahyudi. They were caught, but three riders attacked again and currently form the breakaway:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xva.png Koch desperately tries to make it to the breakaway, and eventually succeeds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Panayotov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vuillermoz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Zoidl did not get approval of the peloton, possibly because they are stronger puncheurs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/04.jpg

Juodvalkis takes the intermediate sprint ahead of Koch and Mansuco. The gap to the peloton is 2'47 with 100 kilometer to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/05.jpg

Because Koch is a relative danger for the GC (34th at +3'17), the peloton increases the pace to keep him under control. Eddie Stobart and Valio take the initiative together with Kulczyk, to defend pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Kaczmarek's youth jersey. The gap fluctuates between two and three minutes for the next period.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/06.jpg

The wind is quite strong today, so GCN and Compal make an attempt at a echelon with 35k to go. Unfortunately they forgot to include their main GC rider in the diagonal and they didn't get very far. The distance to the breakaway has been reduced to 1'30 though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/07.jpg

Juodvalkis is allowed to pick up the final intermediate sprint but the group is caught immediately thereafter. 15 kilometers to go, so we're on the early, easier slopes of the climb. The real fireworks should start at around eight kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/08.jpg

My fortune teller appears to have been correct. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier attacks around the eight kilometer mark. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer feels threatened and follows the Frenchman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/09.jpg

A group of seven riders come together:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ben Nasser
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Zaini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Vanendert
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Edmondson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Teklit

At 25 seconds the following riders:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kadri
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Venter
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Weiss
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Ziesler
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Hugentobler
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Othman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Belgasem

A small gap to:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xwa.png Rabitsch
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Bazhkou
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Gunman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Hategeka
who are just ahead of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/10.jpg

Ben Nasser attacks with 4000 meters to go, Gautier quick to jump on his wheel. Meyer is struggling slightly, he does not respond and remains at the back of the group. Venter almost makes the crossover the first group, while the others are caught by a larger group. The gap to the front is 40 seconds but only set to increase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/11.jpg

Edmondson leads the group and brings Zaini, Vanendert and Meyer back to Ben Nasser and Gautier. Teklit at 18 seconds, Venter at 36 and the peloton at over a minute. Rabitsch, Bazhkou and Gunman will likely lose their second, third and fourth place in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/12.jpg

The pace slowed down, so Teklit managed to rejoin. Hategeka jumps away from the peloton, chasing after Venter who is also getting closer to the front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/13.jpg

Edmondson now attacking for himself. Gautier, Vanendert and Meyer have an answer, but for Ben Nasser, Zaini and Teklit it's too much. They have to leave a gap which looks to be unrepairable. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Haas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Gonzalez Cortes have gone in pursuit of Hategeka.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/14.jpg

Flamme rouge, and Edmondson demonstrates his strength today. Only Gautier can follow, barely. Meyer and Vanendert with a bit of a gap, but the former is unlikely to lose the GC lead unless he implodes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/15.jpg

Gautier tried but Edmondson is just too strong.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Joshua Edmondson of BNZ Cycling Team wins the sixth stage atop Filo Sierras Comechingones! Strong performance from the Brit, who will also make a jump in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier runner-up, in the same time as Edmondson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Vanendert drags pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer over the finish line. No bonus seconds for the Australian but the gap is only seventeen seconds, hence keeping the leader's jersey. Vanendert and Gautier are second and third at 51 seconds, Edmondson from twelfth to fourth at +1'18.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/18.jpg

Next are Ben Nasser, Zaini and Teklit at 49 seconds. They finish fifth, sixth and seventh on the stage, and these are also their new positions in the GC.

Venter eight at 1'03.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/19.jpg

Hategeka and Haas complete the stage top ten. They responded too late to the early attacks, otherwise they might have had a better result

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/20.jpg

Weiss, Bazhkou, Gunman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Vichot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xfc.png Simon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Pibernik at 2'25. The Belarussian and the New Zealander drop to eight and ninth in the GC. The Slovenian reclaims the youth jersey from Kaczmarek.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S6/21.jpg

Rabitsch in the large group at 2'52. The Austrian is the biggest loser of the day, dropping from second to tenth in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xrs.png Kaislavuo in the same group, remaining KoM leader but conceding the points classification to Meyer by one point.

Everyone finished the climb inside the time limit.
