Villa Mercedes hosts stage five, an individual time trial of just over 20 kilometers long. Most stage favorites start early in the race, while the GC riders obviously start at the end of the queue.
Renäng with the first time on the board: 27'08
Fellow Swede Johansson dives under that time by 39 seconds.
Third place at the moment for Kiriakidis, with +38. Scotson and Kukrle fourth and fifth at 44 seconds.
Dzervus +6 at the split, +12 at the finish for provisional second.
One second advantage for Sterobo at the intermediate, but managed to add a zero at the end: -10 seconds, new best time!
Zaraliev +53, provisional fifth.
Vandewalle very underwhelming, nearly a minute off Sterobo's time and even behind Kiriakidis.
Fourth place for Bookwalter, +29.
The stage is too long for prologue winner Chavanne, losing 1'33. Same time as Quintero.
Close call, Bouet only two seconds slower at the intermediate. This gap extends to fifteen at the end, which is third place for now behind Sterobo and Johansson.
Zoidl +39. He will move up in the GC from 57th to 49th, but that's still way too low for someone of his caliber.
+1'21 for Thill, not enough for a top thirty on the stage despite being amongst the best 10 Ã 15 time trialist in the race.
Another underperformance from one of the stage favorites: Christian already 28 seconds down at the split, and 47 at the finish to just place himself inside the provisional top ten. The conditions on the road may have worsened over the last hour or so, could be an explanation behind these times. But it did rain earlier in the day.
Haas disputes this theory, he is only one second slower than Christian despite being much inferior to him.
Pfingsten seems just fine as well, +35 for sixth place.
Omarsson, currently 26th in the GC, with a time of 27'11, 52 seconds slower than Sterobo (26'19).
Davison, currently 25th in the GC, four seconds faster than the Icelander.
Kaczmarek goes three seconds slower than the Omarsson, which means they are now tied in the GC but the Pole has the advantage on milliseconds. Davison ahead of both.
Teammate Gradek with a better time, and will move up from 22nd to 16th in the GC ahead of Davison, Kaczmarek, Omarsson and Haas.
Langeveld (+1'22) goes into the stage as fifteenth and leaves as thirteenth, five seconds ahead of Pfingsten who moves to fourteenth.
Simon with a better time (+1'06) and might even move into the overall top ten.
Not ahead of Gonzalez Cortes, who posts the eight time so far today at 44 seconds from Sterobo. Unlikely anyone left will beat the Dane.
Even better time for Gunman, who goes virtual sixth at exactly 30 seconds.
Bazhkou next in line, and also a very good time for him, four seconds slower than Gunman to defend his GC position.
Young rider classifiation leader Pibernik with a very tough task to defend against all these riders. He's already over a minute down at the split. +2'41 as one of the worst today, dropping to 24th in the GC and losing the youth jersey to Kaczmarek.
Teklit +2'10, going down from ninth to fifteenth in the GC.
Edmondson also not the best time trialist, and drops to twelfth with his +2'14.
Another rider who drops places at the expense of the more all-round riders: Hategeka. +2'11, enough to see him drop to eleventh.
Vanendert does better (+1'29), but does not manage to defend his GC position against Gunman and Bazhkou. He does stay ahead of Gonzalez Cortes and Simon.
Five riders to go. Gautier doing damage control (+1'54), but will see Bazhkou, Gunman, Vanendert and Gonzalez Cortes pass him.
Rabitsch is known to have a decent prologue and puncheurs skill, hence he's currently fourth in the GC. He is not known as the best time trialist, but outdoes himself today: +56 for a place just outside the top 20 on the stage, and the virtual GC leader.
Ben Nasser has nothing to answer to that. +1'57, which means he's tied with Gonzalez Cortes in the GC and seven seconds ahead of Gautier.
Zaini +2'25, thus making a huge plunge to ninth in the GC, barely ahead of Simon.
Meyer GC leader going into the stage. He has to finish within 41 seconds of Rabitsch to also leave the stage as GC leader. +1'18 from Sterobo, which is a very good 37th on the stage result. More importantly, it's only 22 seconds slower than the Austrian, and therefore he remains GC leader.
Now that every rider is finished, we have the confirmation that Rasmus Sterobo is the stage winner ahead of Johansson and Bouet. Meyer leads the GC as stated before, with Rabitsch now in second place at 21 seconds. Bazhkou third at 40 seconds, followed by Gunman (+47), Vanendert (+59), Gonzalez Cortes, Ben Nasser (both +1'13), Gautier (+1'20), Zaini (+1'38) and Simon (+1'40).
