From El Potrero de la Funes to La Punta, stage four is another hilly stage. The main feature is El Mirador del Potrero with 12 kilometers to go, with a downhill final.
The names of the first breakaway:
Areruya (KoM leader, 22 pts)
Kopfauf
Hughes
A. Dahlberg
Vandewalle
Kiriakidis
However, they would be caught before the first climb of the day.
Kaislavuo attacks and wins the mountain sprint (Alto de los Puquids), ahead of Hughes and Areruya. The Finn now has 16 points compared to Rwandan's 24.
The names of the second breakaway:
Scotson
Mathis
Hughes
Kaislavuo
Koch
This one would last considerably longer. 2'12 with 88 kilometers to go. Eddie Stobart take the initiative in the peloton for GC leader Meyer.
Kaislavuo wins another mountain sprint (Alto la Florida) and brings his tally to 22, two behind Areruya. With a category two climb at the end of the stage, we might see a change in leadership.
Koch would take the intermediate sprint ahead of Scotson and Kaislavuo.
Into the final phase, 20 kilometers to go and the gap has been reduced from three to one minute. Kulczyk, Compal and GCN the driving forces behind the peloton lately.
And Kaislavuo achieves his goal, he is the first to cross El Mirador del Potrero and takes the KoM jersey. He even managed to distance the other four, who are about to be caught by the peloton. Surprisingly, the favorites do not battle on the climb.
The first movement from the favorites comes over the top and into the descent. Zaini goes for an attack, catching Mathis and Scotson in the process. There is no real reaction from behind.
5 kilometers for Kaislavuo, with Hughes and Koch at 1'13. Zaini 22 seconds behind them, but only 13 ahead of the peloton. Gautier, Edmondson took it on them to chase the Italian, even Meyer himself chased for a small bit.
Zaini caught Hughes and Koch, but the peloton caught them. Now 153 riders chase Kaislavuo. Salleh and Thorsen have been dropped, but most of the other sprinters are still in the peloton, albeit farther back than ideal for a mass sprint.
But it's not enough. Jesse Kaislavuo wins stage four from the breakaway! The second time this race a stage is won by a member of the breakaway. Very good result for an amateur team, RBC-Spidertech. He now leads two classifications, as he also takes the lead in the points classification next to the mountains classification.
1'08 later, Kadri the best sprinter amongst those at the front of the peloton. Geschke completes the top three, ahead of Kruopis, Favilli, Gradek, Cimolai, Martinez, Meyer and Ben Nasser. A mix of sprinters, punchy sprinter, GC riders and people who happened to be at the front. Pretty disappointing stage in terms of GC battle, as these riders did not seem interested in attacking today. Meyer therefore remains in the leader's jersey with the same gaps as before. Tomorrow's time trial should change that.
