Four laps and an uphill finish, this is where the GC contenders came for.

There were three attempts to form a breakaway before the first mountain sprint:
Attempt 1: Aguirre, Jim, Minoungou, Areruya, Mathis, Salas
Attempt 2: Koch, Brozyna, Aguirre, A. Dahlberg, Salas
Attempt 3: Koch, Areruya, Aguirre, A. Dahlberg, Salas

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Areruya takes maximum points at the KoM during the third attempt ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xva.png Koch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png A. Dahlberg. Equinor and Eddie Stobart would bring this group back as well.

Fourth time's a charm:

The local lap includes a small uncategorized hill, and after the first passage pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png L. Dahlberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Zaini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier create a gap. They join up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Salas, who tried to join the breakaway but failed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Kangangi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Meiler bring them back, but the hectic start means many riders are dropped from the peloton already. Only 93 riders left with 150 kilometers still to go. Most notable names not included are yesterday's stage winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Zaraliev, youth leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Beyer and local hero pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Diaz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/06.jpg

A battle between Areruya and Kaislavuo for the second KoM, but the Rwandan remains unbeaten. The Finn did win the previous intermediate sprint. The other four riders did not attack for the mountain points, and were caught very swiftly by the peloton of 71 riders. Kangangi took the remaining points. The gap to the leading duo is 2 minutes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/07.jpg

GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Chavanne is dropped as well under the fast pace of Valio, Campari, Compal and Kulczyk. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Wahyudi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Weiss pick him up to try and get him back in the peloton, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Gunman is now the highest ranked rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/08.jpg

Areruya makes it four out of four without challenge. The peloton slowed down and as a result most riders who were previously dropped returned, including Chavanne. 70 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Grmay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Bardet (who was dropped previously) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xwa.png Abelouache attack with 62 to go, when the gap to the break is reduced to 1'15. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Mahdar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Veilleux would follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/10.jpg

The five joined the two to create a breakaway of seven, with the peloton at 1'26. Sauber and Eddie Stobart chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/11.jpg

The group was caught on the penultimate ascent, where Kangangi took some more points by leading the peloton which now consists of 83 riders...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/12.jpg

...and without Chavanne, this time for good. Gunman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Kruopis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Bazhkou are the top GC riders remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/13.jpg

Another attack over the small climb, this time Bardet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Ziesler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Geschke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Othman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Hugentobler....

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/14.jpg

...nevermind, Melier and Kangangi pull everything back today (with help from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Thill this time around).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/15.jpg

5 kilometers to go, it seems like we're heading for an uphill sprint to the finish. Thill still leads, with riders from Valio, Campari and Kulczyk at the front. Behind them, the main contenders for the stage win, and the other riders in this 66 rider group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer leading the way, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Omarsson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Zaini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Langeveld, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ben Nasser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Gunman. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Edmondson a bit further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/17.jpg

Zaini attacks at roughly two kilometers from the finish line. Meyer and Ben Nasser are quick to react, while Gautier comes from behind but manages to go with them. Then a small chasing group with Edmondson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Vanendert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xwa.png Rabitsch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Hategeka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Teklit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Pibernik chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/18.jpg

Meyer attacks under the flamme rouge, as Gautier is struggling to keep in contact with Zaini and Ben Nasser. The chasers did not get closer, but are riding away from the group behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/19.jpg

The Australian has a small gap, and is set to win the stage. Gautier recovered and found his way back. Vanendert, Edmondson, Rabitsch, Hategeka and Teklit managed to retain their gap, with Pibernik and Bazhkou also clear from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Travis Meyer wins the third stage! He also takes the lead in the general classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/21.jpg

Zaini beats Ben Nasser and Gautier to second. Nineteen seconds is the gap on the stage, 31, 34 and 44 respective in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/22.jpg

Rabitsch with a very strong performance in fifth place at 35 seconds. With his advantage from the prologue he jumps to fourth place GC-wise, at 43 seconds.

Edmondson sixth, Vanendert seventh, Hategeka eight. All in the same time as Rabitsch.

Teklit +49 for ninth, Pibernik completing the top ten at +1'02, and becoming the new leader in the young rider classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S3/23.jpg

Bazhkou eleventh (+1'19), followed by a larger group including Gunman at 1'35. The remains of the peloton at 2'29.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Zoidl losing nearly five minutes, together with nearly the entire Sauber team who was called back to help Chavanne despite it being a mission impossible to keep him in the leader's jersey.
