Tour de San Luis - Stage 2
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/01.jpg

Stage two, where the sprinters are likely to battle for victory. An early KoM will decide the first leader in the mountain classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Areruya wins the mountain sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xrs.png Buckosky and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xva.png Koch. 6, 4 and 2 points for them, the first KoM classification. They temporarily formed a breakaway with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xwa.png Schlemmer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xfc.png Rodriguez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Salas, which did not succeed.

There were more attempts which were brought back by Sauber and ENI:
Attempt 2: Cominelli, Zaraliev, Kaislavuo, Blums, Dina
Attempt 3: Dina, Blums, Stewart, Minoungou
Attempt 4: Vandewalle, Scotson, Stewart, Minoungou, Eriksson, Blums

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/03.jpg

The reason these teams chased so viciously is the upcoming intermediate sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Chavanne beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Vanoverschelde. Five bonus seconds for the Swiss to extend his GC lead. Technically the car and the motorcycle were first to cross the line but we'll ignore that. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Beyer third for one second.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/04.jpg

Now the teams do allow a breakaway to be formed:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vandewalle (GC 9th, +18)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Zaraliev (GC 21st, +22)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xrs.png Perry
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Min

Two strong rouleurs in the group, who might be dangerous for the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/05.jpg

The second intermediate sprint is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vandewalle ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xrs.png Perry and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Min. With these seconds the Belgian jumps a few places in the GC. He is also the virtual GC leader, because the gap to the peloton is 5'24 with 92 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/06.jpg

Valio and ENI do most the work in the peloton, sprinter teams Sauber and Eddie Stobart sit back. The gap reached six minutes max, but is on the way down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/07.jpg

15 kilometers to go, 1'17. Eddie Stobart and Sauber brought out the trains to make the final catch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/08.jpg

That would prove to be more difficult than anticipated. There is some good cooperation and they manage to keep to gap just above a minute with 10 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/09.jpg

Vandewalle feels there might be more to gain here and attacks with 5k to go, where the gap is still 50 seconds. A breakaway victory becomes even more likely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/10.jpg

The Belgian couldn't get clear, now it's Zaraliev's turn to attack. This attempt looks a bit more promising.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/11.jpg

Meanwhile, in the peloton:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Martinezpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Chérel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Cimolaipcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Thorsenpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Hugentobler

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Manan
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Colbrellipcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xfc.png Kip
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xwa.png Haussler

Chavanne, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Guillén, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Bogdanovics, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Mezgec, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Kruopis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Korzh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Vanoverschelde positioned further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/12.jpg

Perry goes after Zaraliev. Vandewalle and Min are caught by the peloton. The Stobart train lost its final carriage, Thorsen, but the locomotives continue to make pace. Then come Weiss and Manan, with Von Hoff and Kip interfering ahead of Salleh. Bogdanovics and Guillén found their way back forward, as did pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Habtom.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/13.jpg

500 meters, Perry closing on Zaraliev but will it be enough? Will they stay ahead of the peloton? Cimolai and Manan lead out Thorsen and Salleh, with Von Hoff and Colbrelli behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/14.jpg

Thorsen leads Salleh, but that will likely be for third place. Colbrelli and Van Hoff closing in. Then Haussler, Habtom, Kip and Guillén.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/15.jpg

Victory for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Stanislav Zaraliev! Great win for the Bulgarian! He might even become the new GC leader if the jury decides to give a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/16.jpg

Perry just stays ahead of Thorsen and Salleh. Great result for the young Canadian and the RBC amateur team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2/SanLuis/S2/17.jpg

Colbrelli completes the top five ahead of Von Hoff, Habtom, Kip, Haussler and Bogdanovics. Guillén eleventh.

No time gap was given, so Chavanne remains in the leader's jersey. Zaraliev now second at 6 seconds, Vandewalle from ninth to sixth.
