Tour d'Andorra - Stage 2
Vien
Tour of Andorra – Stage 2

We're back in Andorra for another stage in the mountains. Compared to yesterday's fairly short three-big-mountain-stage, this one's a bit easier on paper: I'd say two and a half climb, with the final being on the downhill of the second big climb. Which means a downhill finish, which has been known to sometimes give some very surprising results.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Panayotov will be defending his leader's jersey this stage. Will he be able to do so?

Judging by the favourites, he might be in for a diffucult task, a he's only at the bottom of the list. And just like yesterday, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Pinot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Pomoshnikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Kiserlovski are on top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/1/PCM0024.jpg

First attack of the day:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Mestric
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Hugentobler
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png De Marchi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png De Marchi is only 1'34 behind the GC, so it'd be interesting if the pack will let them go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0025.jpg

Unsurprisingly, five riders smell pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png De Marchi and want to go with him. The names?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Daspuntsag
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Moyano
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Lewis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Bugge
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Blums

None of them are ranked well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0026.jpg

A long cat-and-mouse game with the peloton then, as the pack is undecided if they should get this breakaway go or not. Even onto the first climb, it's still unsure if this will be the break of the day.

Due to this pace, the breakaway has also fallen apart, and it looks like they will be caught one by one. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Bugge is now the furthest ahead, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Blums and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png De Marchi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0027.jpg

Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Bugge still ahead though, but look at what's happening to the peloton. Only 62 riders left with almost 100 kilometres to go, thanks to the pace of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Hughes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Nakane! Surely this pace will have an influence on the final outcome of this stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0028.jpg

Poor pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Bugge is still trying his best.. One minute in front of the pack still, but at least it's rewarded by the first KoM sprint. 20 points for him, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Hughes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Cuming take second and third from the 53-man pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0029.jpg

Off to the second climb then. Right when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Bugge gets caught, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Campero attacks! And he's followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png König, who has some catching up to do after yesterday's performance. Let's see if this long-range attack has any chance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0030.jpg

Banco de Bogota is leading the chase, which means more and more riders get dropped from the pack. Among them – Yesterday's surprise pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Rodrigues as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Stancu. Their GC will likely be gone...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0031.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Campero wins the second KoM sprint in from of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png König. He has a small gap now, will he try to make it larger on the descent?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0032.jpg

He doesn't, and they will enter the final climb together.. But behind them.. Disaster for Adastra as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Panayotov gets dropped on the descent! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Bardet is desperately trying to get him back to the “peloton”, though with only around 5 kilometres to do so, he might have to start the final climb a bit behind.

Also in this small group – pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Pomoshnikov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0033.jpg

In the front of this peloton though, there's also a break! It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Suaza and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Pinot with a major coup on the downhill section. Already over 30 seconds on the peloton, with famous poor downhillers pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Anacona and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Ratiy in front of them. This gap can only become larger!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0034.jpg

Time for an overview at the start of the final climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Suaza and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Pinot are closing in on the leaders:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0035.jpg

What can't be seen in this overview hoewever is the poor positioning of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Kiserlovski. He will need a good climb to even get close to a good result today.

The four leaders also get together now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0036.jpg

On the top of the final climb, we can see that this group has also fallen apart. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Costagli is leading the chase to the leaders, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Anacona's cracking might cause another break in this group.

45 seconds between the leaders and this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0037.jpg

Over three minutes behind there's the group of riders who couldn't meet their expectations today. Inlcuding pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Kiserlovski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Pomoshnikov and (even about to drop from this group) GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Panayotov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0038.jpg

Another overview for your viewing pleasure, as the downhill now starts:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0039.jpg

No special activities on the final downhill, then. It seems like the four leaders are happy with their performance today already, and don't want to take even more risks for a few more seconds.

With bonifications on the line though, we might see a small sprint. Though with a kilometre to go, the final stage result already seems to have been set, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Campero has a bike's length over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Suaza.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0040.jpg

Never mind that, because with 300 metres to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Pinot is catching up quite fast! Who's going to win this...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0041.jpg

Holy moly, we will have to await a jury's decision here... Let's see what happened behind them first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0042.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png König obviously took fourth, and it looks like the group behind them stayed together, too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Grmay took 5th, in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Hacecký.

+59 seconds to the leaders.

Actually the only one who lost some time on them was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Ratiy. 22 seconds lost on this group in the final kilometre.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0043.jpg

And three minutes behind, what can be unflatteningly called the losers' group finishes with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Kiserlovski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Pomoshnikov and GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Panayotov.. At least the gap didn't get larger on the downhill, I guess.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0044.jpg

So who won this stage! Well, in the end it was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Campero who had just enough left in the tank to squeeze out the stage win! Very good win for him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Suaza managed to get second in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Pinot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0045.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Suaza hoewever took the leader's, green and KoM jersey. Surely he wouldn't mind on missing out on this stage too much then.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0046.jpg

The U25 jersey is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Henao. Compal takes the team GC too. Wow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Andorra/2/PCM0047.jpg

Get ready for more shakeups tomorrow? Or not? Ha!
