Tour of Andorra – Stage 2
We're back in Andorra for another stage in the mountains. Compared to yesterday's fairly short three-big-mountain-stage, this one's a bit easier on paper: I'd say two and a half climb, with the final being on the downhill of the second big climb. Which means a downhill finish, which has been known to sometimes give some very surprising results.
Panayotov will be defending his leader's jersey this stage. Will he be able to do so?
Judging by the favourites, he might be in for a diffucult task, a he's only at the bottom of the list. And just like yesterday, Pinot, Pomoshnikov and Kiserlovski are on top.
First attack of the day:
Mestric
Hugentobler
De Marchi.
De Marchi is only 1'34 behind the GC, so it'd be interesting if the pack will let them go!
Unsurprisingly, five riders smell De Marchi and want to go with him. The names?
Daspuntsag
Moyano
Lewis
Bugge
Blums
None of them are ranked well.
A long cat-and-mouse game with the peloton then, as the pack is undecided if they should get this breakaway go or not. Even onto the first climb, it's still unsure if this will be the break of the day.
Due to this pace, the breakaway has also fallen apart, and it looks like they will be caught one by one. Bugge is now the furthest ahead, followed by Blums and De Marchi.
Only Bugge still ahead though, but look at what's happening to the peloton. Only 62 riders left with almost 100 kilometres to go, thanks to the pace of Hughes and Nakane! Surely this pace will have an influence on the final outcome of this stage.
Poor Bugge is still trying his best.. One minute in front of the pack still, but at least it's rewarded by the first KoM sprint. 20 points for him, while Hughes and Cuming take second and third from the 53-man pack.
Off to the second climb then. Right when Bugge gets caught, Campero attacks! And he's followed by König, who has some catching up to do after yesterday's performance. Let's see if this long-range attack has any chance.
Banco de Bogota is leading the chase, which means more and more riders get dropped from the pack. Among them – Yesterday's surprise Rodrigues as well as Stancu. Their GC will likely be gone...
Campero wins the second KoM sprint in from of König. He has a small gap now, will he try to make it larger on the descent?
He doesn't, and they will enter the final climb together.. But behind them.. Disaster for Adastra as Panayotov gets dropped on the descent! Bardet is desperately trying to get him back to the “peloton”, though with only around 5 kilometres to do so, he might have to start the final climb a bit behind.
Also in this small group – Pomoshnikov.
In the front of this peloton though, there's also a break! It's Suaza and Pinot with a major coup on the downhill section. Already over 30 seconds on the peloton, with famous poor downhillers Anacona and Ratiy in front of them. This gap can only become larger!
Time for an overview at the start of the final climb. Suaza and Pinot are closing in on the leaders:
What can't be seen in this overview hoewever is the poor positioning of Kiserlovski. He will need a good climb to even get close to a good result today.
The four leaders also get together now.
On the top of the final climb, we can see that this group has also fallen apart. Costagli is leading the chase to the leaders, while Anacona's cracking might cause another break in this group.
45 seconds between the leaders and this group.
Over three minutes behind there's the group of riders who couldn't meet their expectations today. Inlcuding Kiserlovski, Pomoshnikov and (even about to drop from this group) GC leader Panayotov.
Another overview for your viewing pleasure, as the downhill now starts:
No special activities on the final downhill, then. It seems like the four leaders are happy with their performance today already, and don't want to take even more risks for a few more seconds.
With bonifications on the line though, we might see a small sprint. Though with a kilometre to go, the final stage result already seems to have been set, as Campero has a bike's length over Suaza.
Never mind that, because with 300 metres to go, Pinot is catching up quite fast! Who's going to win this...
Holy moly, we will have to await a jury's decision here... Let's see what happened behind them first.
König obviously took fourth, and it looks like the group behind them stayed together, too. Grmay took 5th, in front of Hacecký.
+59 seconds to the leaders.
Actually the only one who lost some time on them was Ratiy. 22 seconds lost on this group in the final kilometre.
And three minutes behind, what can be unflatteningly called the losers' group finishes with Kiserlovski, Pomoshnikov and GC leader Panayotov.. At least the gap didn't get larger on the downhill, I guess.
So who won this stage! Well, in the end it was Campero who had just enough left in the tank to squeeze out the stage win! Very good win for him. Suaza managed to get second in front of Pinot.
Suaza hoewever took the leader's, green and KoM jersey. Surely he wouldn't mind on missing out on this stage too much then.
The U25 jersey is Henao. Compal takes the team GC too. Wow.
Get ready for more shakeups tomorrow? Or not? Ha!
