Tour of Andorra – Stage 1
Welcome everybody to the coverage of the Tour d'Andorra! We're off for five consecutive days in the mountains, in which the best climber of the Continental Tour will be crowned.
The first stage takes us from Vielha from Envalira. 161,8 kilometres in the saddle for those who survive, finishing off with a 25-kilometre climb that gets steeper and steeper up to the finish line. Who will take the lead?
The bookie's favourites to do is are Pinot, Pomoshnikov and Kiserlovski. Though surely riders like Suaza and Kiserlovski must be looking forward to this too!
If you have blinked once since the race started you've probably missed it, but a breakaway has already been formed just after the starting line:
Manfred
Taborre
Helme
Manfred easily the best climber of them on paper, though you can't rule out daily form.
And as expected, Manfred easily takes the first KoM sprint ahead of Taborre and Helme
Onto the second climb, ENI-MOL slowly starts chasing the breakaway. Six minutes for them right now.
Manfred also takes the second KoM sprint. With 32 points for him and 25 up for grabs for thie winner of this stage, it means his KoM jersey is now almost secured!
Taborre and Helme finish second and third. Actually they have 7 minutes now, meaning ENI-MOL is just trying to control. Though with the very long climb still ahead, it's still quite easy for the pack to catch them, it feels.
Actually, before the steeper parts of the final climb happen, there's only two minutes left for the break. Which means a pure climber will be in the leader's jersey tomorrow!
12 kilometres to go, and ENI-MOL is going Sky mode; 77 riders left in the peloton, due to the high pace of Stancu. Who will be the first to attack?
No one yet under the 5-kilometre banner! Stancu is still putting up a great pace, and it looks like we'll get an explosive end of the stage... Or are the favourites just saving their legs?
Wow, a break in the pack! Who needs attacks if that happens!
The names up front are
Stancu
Diaz
Pomoshnikov
Ratiy
Panayotov
Kiser
Pinot
Elissonde
31 seconds for them.
Rodigues gets them back for his leader Anacona. Meanwhile Suaza doesn't seem to care much, might be the calmest of them all, and could be on the attack soon, judging by his positioning.
Two kilometres to go and there's still 27 riders left in what can be called the peloton, which includes all favourites. Oberfranken is now in the lead, with Diaz leading out Ratiy. Kiserlovski looking good behind them too. Is anyone still going to attack?
Yep, there we are! Just before the red kite, five riders attack and are looking for the stage win now:
Kiserlovski
Panayotov
Hacecký
Suaza
Stancu
Behind them, Oberfranken is trying to get diesel Ratiy back with them!
Also, a bit further behind, König seems to be having a very bad day. Up to him to keep the time loss as small as possible.
400 metres tyo go and it's now Panayotov in front of Hacecký! And unless one of those two break, it looks like the stage win will go to one of them!
Suaza is trying to not let that happen though...
But everyone is dead tired, meaning Panayotov is taking the first stage of the Tour d'Andorra! A big win that means his overperformance this season continues. Will be interesting to see if he can keep this up.
Hacecký and Suaza take second and third.
Kiserlovski manages to keep the time gap as small as possible: 0 seconds! Behind them though there's a small gap to Rodrigues, 17 seconds. Diaz finishes 6th, also 17 seconds behind the winner.
ENI-MOL quite disappoints then with only 7th and 8th for Stancu and Pomoshnikov. They might have to re-write their plans for tomorrow. Though the top 14 all finishes with Rodigues' time.
Elissonde and Medvedev complete the top 10.
Top stage favourite Pinot only manages to finish 12th. Looks like he has some overthinking to do, too.
Atapuma and König are the biggest losers today for sure though. With almost two minutes lost, their GC is in shambles!
Off to the podium then. Let's take a look at Panayotov one more time!
Meanwhile, Manfred was simply the best of the breakaway and takes the KoM jersey as a reward.
And Lehtinen takes the U25 jersey. At least that's something for Valio!
See you tomorrow, in which we will see... Well, we all know what we're going to see. Mountains. Have a nice day till then!
