Tour of South Africa - Stage 6

Tour of South Africa – Stage 6

Welcome to the sixth and final stage of the Tour of South Africa. Having had three hilly stages before, the main question is: Will we get more of the same, or something completely different?

The profile is slightly less exciting on paper than yesterday. Actually it's a downgrade in most aspects, except that the finish is uphill. A small bunch sprint this time can't be ruled out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Schreurs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Flügel are mentioned as the biggest favourites this time. Kinoshita and Schreurs have already quite proven their worth, and will try to attack GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ulissi. Flügel has mainly disappointed so far and needs to move up in the GC to avoid a disappointing performance by Kraftwerk in this Tour.

GC's 2nd Pichon gets unmentioned, but his agressive racing has proven to be very valuable already. Can he seal the deal and get a great result for Nordstrom?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0054.jpg

Not too many teams are looking to join the break today. This means the first attack already gets two minutes within a few kilometres. The names:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Debesay
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Jallays
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Konovalovas
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Sinkeldam
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Sanchez Gil

Some very interesting names! Though none of them are ranked well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0055.jpg

Popo4ever and WCC leading the pack. Certainly not the teams you'd expect to do so. Weird stuff.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0056.jpg

Not much happening after that, really. The peloton has been toying with the leaders, never allowing them more than two minutes. 1,5 of them are left with 20 kilometres to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0057.jpg

Popo4ever and WCC still leading the chase. Did Generali give them money to do so?

Anyway, if someone wants to try a long-range attack, it has to happen soon. If not, the list of potential GC winners is getting smaller and smaller.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0058.jpg

There we go! 12 kilometres to go and it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Ignatiev trying to take back his crown! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kinoshita quicky follows, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Kung is trying to bring the peloton back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0059.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Kung manages to do so all by himself. 10 kilometres to go, and despite all this, still a minute on the breakaway!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0060.jpg

Speaking of which, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Debesay attacks! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Jallays can't keep up the pace and drops, while the others are still holding a steady pace and try to not let him go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0061.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kinoshita is leading the pack now and has a rapid pace! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Pichon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ulissi follow him immediately. No gaps seem to have been made yet, but if one person cracks, the riders behind them will be in trouble.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0062.jpg

Yes, a gap has been made! The 11 riders who split from the peloton are, in order:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kinoshita
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Pichon
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ulissi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Froome
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Schreurs
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Ignatiev
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Bystrom
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Roux
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Dowsett
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Prevar
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Juul-Jensen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Betancourt (finally)
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Kreder.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0063.jpg

Two riders that should belong to this group, but aren't there, are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Costa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Flügel! And it's the other Costa who's desperately trying to get them back there!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0064.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Froome won't let it happen and attacks from the group! Can he get a gap?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0065.jpg

Doesn't look like it! Actually the group loses speed now, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Flügel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Costa now have the chance to come back and reposition themselves.

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Debesay still over a minute ahead over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Konovalovas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Sinkeldam and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Sanchez, with this group around 20 seconds behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0066.jpg

Attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Betancourt with 4 kilometres to go! He uses the three breakaway riders to make a jump. Did he save enough energy in the first stages to do somethign great now then?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0067.jpg

1,4 kilometres to go and the pack, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Betancourt still leading, is closing in onpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Debesay rapidly! 50 seconds should be enough for him to win the stage, but he needs to keep doing to bring in the points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0068.jpg

We're under the red kite now; 1 kilometre to go. And it looks like the peloton has started the sprint already. And there's no real favourite in front. Actually, it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Prevar in front of Debesay's teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Roux and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Betancourt! At least Popo4ever and WCC's tactics are becoming more understandable now.

Still 38 seconds for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Debesay!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0069.jpg

Behind these three, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Flügel seems to be leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Kreder, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Dowsett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Ignatiev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ulissi right next to them.

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Debesay can't be reached anymore, right? Right???

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0070.jpg

He can't! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.pngMekseb Debesay wins the sixth and final stage of the Tour of South Africa! A good prize after Roux' disappointing stage 5!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0071.jpg

Behind him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Roux actually comes very close to a 1-2 for Xero, but the finish line is just too early for him; second place goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Prevar! Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Betancourt takes 4th in this stage. I don't think that makes up for the rest of his racing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0072.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Kreder then convincingly wins the sprint for 5th place, in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Ignatiev.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0073.jpg

Dowsett, Ulissi, Juul-Jensen and Dyrnes complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0074.jpg

And before we are going to check out the final GC, let's appreciate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Debesay's stage win once again by giving him a great round of applause!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0075.jpg

And now for the GC. No changes in the top 10 compared to yesterday. This means that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Diego Ulissi is the winner of the Tour of South Africa! The Italian learned from his mistakes last year, stuck with his team in the TTT and struck in stage 5, the stage that suited him the most. Congratulations to him and his team, Generali.

Second place is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Laurent Pichon. What a great race by him, with stage 6 being the only stage in which we did not notice him. Hopefully we can enjoy more of his type of racing this season.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Maurice Schreurs finishes third. A decent result for Novatek, he simply lacked that little bit of extra to fight for the race win.

Fourth is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kinoshita, the pre-race favourite. Kinoshita lost some time in the TTT compared to his rivals and lacked the tricks up his sleeve to gain back time on them in the hills. Bummer, though not a complete disaster for Meiji.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Ignatiev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Froome then bringing in the points for Fablok, in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Rui Costa and disappointment pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Flügel. This result certainly shouldn't help them in their relegation race.

Stage 1 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Bystrom takes home 9th, and stage 2 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Roux is 10th. Both results they probably would've accepted before the race started, though things looked a lot better for them at first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0076.jpg

Speaking of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Roux, he actually wins the points classification by one point, in front of Ulissi and Pichon! That's something nice to show off for sure!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0077.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Agostini wins the KoM, as there were no sprints today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0078.jpg

Finally pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Paulus secures his U25 jersey. At least that's some points for Kraftwerk. And Nordstrom wins a well-deserved team ranking.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/6/PCM0079.jpg

That's all for this year's coverage of the Tour of South Africa. We hoped you enjoyed being here, and we hope to see you back next year!
