Tour of South Africa - Stage 5
Vien
Tour of South Africa – Stage 5

Good morning fans of fireworks! At least that's what you must love, if you tuned in today. Because we are going to get a cracking stage!

217 kilometres of laps on and around a massive hill near Knysna. The only downside is that the finish is flat, but with such terrain it's very unlikely that the teams' leaders will stay together.

One team that probably hopes for that to happen however is Fablok, as they own the top 3 positions in the GC after yesterday's TTT: Ignatiev, Roche and Froome. Though neither of them are marked as a favourite for this stage, they all have what it takes to stay in the lead on a good day.

This stage's favourites though are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.pngFlügel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.pngKinoshita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.pngUlissi. Which proves what was already likely after seeing this profile: If you want a good shot at winning, you better have some good stamina!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0024.jpg

First time's the charm for five riders, who get to be in the breakaway after their first attempt:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Gunman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Cornu
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Stachowiak
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xnf.png Allonca
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Cuming.

Joined slightly later off-camera by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Agostini.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0025.jpg

Neither of them except Agostini has any KoM points, which means one of them will have to win one KoM sprint, and finish at least second at the other three to take the jersey from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xrs.png Kaislavuo.

Agostini on the other hand has 18 points, and therefore needs to win one KoM sprint, and tie another one, to tie him.

And the first one goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Stachowiak in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Cuming.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0026.jpg

He easily wins the second KoM sprint too, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Agostini. Only these two can still become the KoM after this stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0027.jpg

Agostini takes the third sprint. Current standings: Agostini 20, Kaislavuo 18, Stachowiak 16. Three minutes left for the leading group, 85 kilometres to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0028.jpg

Meanwhile, the peloton only has 64 riders left. And someone who doesn't belong to them is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Betancourt, who can say goodbye to his already poor GC now...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0029.jpg

And this looks like it will become a survival of the fittest-race. More riders now drop, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Zingle, GC 4th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Navardauskas and U25 jersey owner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Kung.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0030.jpg

Meanwhile, the breakaway has compeletely fallen apart. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Agostini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Cuming are the furthest ahead, and about to lap some other riders. Agostini also won the final mountain sprint, which means his KoM jersey is secured!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0031.jpg

The full situation now, with 40 kilometres to go:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0032.jpg

Just before the end of the second last climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Roche cracks! The Irish rider will have to find a way back to the pack on the downhill, or his GC will be in shambles. No disaster for Fablok though, as their other riders are still in front of the pack.

The leading duo now has a minute on them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0033.jpg

But Roche didn't even have a chance to get back. Right as the final climb starts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ulissi goes off and tries to bridge the gap to the two leaders!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0034.jpg

Pichon follows quite well, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kinoshita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Schreurs also try to join them. Behind them, it seems like Fablok has decided to keep the pace high instead of attacking themselves.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0035.jpg

The four have decided to join forces and chase Agostini, who has dropped Cuming. However, the top of the hill is rapidly approaching! 12 kilometres to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0036.jpg

Six riders are leading the chase on them now. The “final four” (Pichon hiding behind Ulissi) reach Agostini and looks like they are going to fight for today's win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0038.jpg

Sadly, with a lot of riders getting lapped, it's hard to know what's going on. So here's another time check: Seven chasers are getting closer!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0039.jpg

But it won't be enough! With 2,5 kilometres to go, the four still hold a 35-second gap over the chasing group, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Bystrom.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0040.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ulissi opens the final sprint under the red kite. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.pngSchreurs steps on the gas pedal, but the other two are having troubles following the acceleration! Are we going to get another time gap here?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0041.jpg

Schreurs closes in on Ulissi quite fast. Can he still reach Ulissi with 400 metres to go?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0042.jpg

The answer is no! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.pngDiego Ulissi wins the hardest stage of this year's Tour of South Africa, in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Maurice Schreurs.! Ulissi certainly showed that he was the strongest athlete here, winning the marathon on stamina and sprinting abilities.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0043.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kinoshita outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Pichon for third, a result he won't be too happy with considering he had some time to make up. Though the MGUCI was in his favour, as both him and Pichon still get the same time as the winner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0044.jpg

Behind them it's clear that all groups have completely fallen apart. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Flügel takes 5th, in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Bystrom and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Costa., 44 seconds behind Ulissi. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.pngIgnatiev follows not too far behind. Actually.. He gets the same time as Flügel! He will lose his leader jersey, but that was some nice damage control by him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0045.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Froome finishes 9th, and for some reason gets the same time too! What a relief for Fablok!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0046.jpg

10th is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Juul-Jensen in front of a group with all other main favourites. This includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Roux, who probably had hoped for a better result after his amazing start in stages 1 and 2.

Siskevicius can't keep up with this group on the final metres however, and loses an extra minute. Sad news for the CT team, as a top-10 finish for him will now be quite out of reach.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0047.jpg

And after all that, Nicholas Roche still has five kilometres to go. Ouch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0048.jpg

So, what does the GC look like now? Unsurprisingly, as a result of a great TTT and this stage win, Diego Ulissi is now up front. Pichon continues his overperformance due to his agressive riding and is in second, ahead of Schreurs, Kinoshita and Fablok's Ignatiev-Froome duo. Costa, a disappointing Flügel and Bystrom can still dream of a GC win, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0050.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Pichon takes the green jersey thanks to his constant top 10 performances. Though this ranking is far from decided.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0051.jpg

And as already mentioned, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Agostini is now the proud owner of a KoM jersey!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0052.jpg

And lastly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Paulus is back in the U25 jersey, while Nordstrom owns the team classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/5/PCM0053.jpg

One more stage to go.. Was this it, or will we see more shakeups? Only time will tell!
