Tour of South Africa – Stage 4

We've finally reached the main novelty in this stage race: A 35-kilometre team time trial from Whales Rock to Knysha. The profile features a climb before the first checkpoint, and a downhill after the second one, which may shake up the intermediate times a lot. Nothing will be sure before all teams have finished! Oh, and did I mention it will rain, too?

With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.pngNic Hamilton in the lead thanks to a successful breakaway, two things will be important in this TTT. The first one is obvious: Which team will win? But the second is more important: Which ones will finish with their puncheur, not making him lose time on their rivals?

Generali, Fablok and Euskaltel are the favourites to win this TTT. But once again, a strong TTT team may actually mean their puncheurs will not survive. Therefore their leaders pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ulissi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Froome, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Roche and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Zingle are in for a hard day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0001.jpg

The report will mainly focus on the final kilometres, due to the many leaders that can be dropped. So first a small look at the standings after the first checkpoint:

Quite some small gaps here right now. Fablok is leading with just one second over Repsol and Philips. No top team seems to suffer yet, the only small disappointment is Euskaltel, 9 seconds behind now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0006.jpg

More gaps already appear after the second check. Fablok is now leading quite heavily, looking to upset Generali! Nordstrom is actually doing quite well too, though it might be because of their strength on the hills. Will be interesting to see if they keep up or fall back.

A bit further down the situation of Meiji is a bit worrying. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.pngKinoshita has to come up with a plan, or he's going to lose the GC today...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0015.jpg

And now over to the final kilometres!

Euskaltel, one of the bookies' favourites, finishes with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Zingle. But U25 jersey leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Cosnefroy can only be seen in the background! 45'05 now, easily the best time, 22 seconds ahead of the best team so far, Festina.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Costa obviously having no trouble staying with the team's best riders. Philips sets a new provisional best time of 44'37!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0004.jpg

Meiji decided to take it easy so that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.pngKinoshita wouldn't get in trouble. Not the best time, but not a disaster due to their safety – third, +'39 off Philips.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0005.jpg

Generali seems to have learned from last year's failure. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ulissi stays safely with them, though they lose some speed because of it: Second, four seconds behind Philips!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0007.jpg

Oh, there's our first problem! It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.pngBetancourt who drops from WCC's train with one kilometre to go. He won't lose a lot of time from it, but it's still a bad sign of what's to come. WCC finishes third for now, +24 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0009.jpg

CT team DK Zalgris finishes with their top puncheurs, though the time is very weak – over a minute lost at the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0010.jpg

Netia on damage control too, +40...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.pngAnthony Roux is safely covered by Xero riders too. And they did quite well actually, third place, 20 seconds behind. Roux is still a potential GC winner!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0012.jpg

Another small casualty at Kraftwerk then, As pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.pngKreder (GC 12th) gets dropped. Nothing too bad, and I'm sure they wouldn't mind as lons as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.pngFlügel gets the best possible time.

Only 16 seconds behind Generali, which means four seconds gained on Roux. Not too shabby!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0013.jpg

Novatek's puncheurs are safe too, though strangely pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.pngMichael Ford got dropped. IT's probably a sign that this stage's hill was harder than expected, leaving puncheurs feel better than time trialers. Anyway, nothing too special here for now. Seventh place for them so far, 31 seconds lost on Generali.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0014.jpg

Popo4Ever finishes with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.pngPrevar too. Honestly, it's quite the trend this race. Looks like this race won't be as much of a shakeup after all, at least not final GC-wise. But only time will tell. 8Th, +32!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.pngJuul-Jensen is leading Carlsberg's team with two kilometres to go, trying to squeeze out every possible second for himself. And 7th with +29, once again around the 30 second-mark.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.pngDuchesne drops from Repsol's machine, though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.pngBystrom is fine too. 6th, +26, damn this is getting repetitive.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0018.jpg

Fablok actually has everyone but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.pngSagan with them in the final metres, and their TTT depth seems to have made a huge difference. Can they beat Philips and Generali, like they did at the final checkpoint?

Yes they can, by 7 seconds! With only Nordstrom yet to finish, it looks like we have a winner!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0019.jpg

Now off to Nordstrom.. And hey, are we missing something?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0020.jpg

Yep, it's the yellow jersey! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.pngNic Hamilton has been dropped by his team. Though with no chance of maintaining their jersey anyway, Nordstrom finishes on a very respectable 5th place, 24 seconds behind today's winner Fablok. Having the leader's jersey must've given them wings!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/4/PCM0021.jpg

So once again Fablok wins the TTT, in front of Philips and Generali. But if you were looking for leaders flopping and dropping... Honestly, you will probably leave this report a bit disappointed. All big guns are within a minute from the new GC leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.pngIgnatiev. The only significant dropout was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.pngBetancourt, who is now 22nd, 1'30 behind Ignatiev . Poor WCC.

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.pngKung takes the U25 jersey, at least for one day.

See you tomorrow for the queen stage!
