Tour of South Africa - Stage 3
Vien
Tour of South Africa – Stage 3

The broadcast is back in South Africa for the easiest stage of its Tour. Xero's Anthony Roux will be wearing the leader's jersey in a flat-rated, yet challenging stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Bystrom has the same time as him, and will be one of the many riders looking to take over the jersey with the help of bonification seconds.

The bookies aren't having much confidence in a mass sprint, despite the flat rating. Actually the only non-puncheurs in the list of favourites are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Kreder and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Redecker!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0001.jpg

The first breakaway attempt comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Hamilton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Rocchetti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xnf.png Sweeting. Eight riders try to follow them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0002.jpg

However, they got caught eventually. A second attempt was more successful, with around two minutes on the peloton with 100 kilometres to go:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Cosnefroy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xrs.png Stewart
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png D. Ignatiev
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Rocchetti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Hamilton once again.

All of them are 1'45 behind Roux, with the exception of Stewart, who is five minutes behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0003.jpg

Teams are likely trying to get Roux' teammates tired, as no one is helping Xero to catch the break! The lead is getting lower though, from a maximum of 4'50 to 4'00 with 60 kilometres to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0004.jpg

With 20 kilometres and two minutes left to close, WCC and Carlsberg are getting a little scared. They want a sprint for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Kragh Andersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Redecker. Even pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Juul-Jensen (in third) is trying to help!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0005.jpg

Meanwhile, the pace is making some of the pure sprinters drop. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Carsi being the first of them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xfc.png Kip is not far ahead of him. We won't be seeing a mass sprint today, that's for sure now.

Even more important though, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Edmondson drops back and decides to stay with Kip for the rest of the stage. That's a goodbye to the team's GC aspirations.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0006.jpg

9 kilometres to go and the leaders reach the final climb with one minute left. Will we see any attacks from the pack?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0007.jpg

Strangely, the gap widens on this climb, despite the effort of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Rodriguez Galindo. 1'24 now. Roux is getting scared to lose his jersey now, and he's taking a peek himself with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Daniel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0008.jpg

It's looking more and more like the breakaway will win now, 6 kilometres to go and almost two minutes on the pack. Ignatiev though is the first to get dropped from the leading group, thanks to the hard work of Hamilton!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0009.jpg

Looks like Hamilton has a chance for the stage win and even the leaders jersey as... Wait, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Pichon, what are you doing? He attacks from the bunch and drags Roux with him! Certainly the team didn't want him to close the gap with Hamilton?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0010.jpg

The full situation with three kilometres to go:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0011.jpg

Ulissi has to do some closing work though, while WCC are in the wrong stage I think, as they're forming a sprint train in the midst of all the fighting.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0012.jpg

Up ahead, the fight for the stage win starts. Rocchetti is ahead, with Hamilton on his wheel. Next to them, Cosnefroy and Stewart.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0013.jpg

In the meantime, Roux has been caught by the pack but Pichon is still trying to get a gap!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0014.jpg

Hamilton storms out of Rocchetti's wheel now and is looking for a great stage win. It seems like being able to climb is more inportant than being able to sprint after today's tough stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0015.jpg

Yep! Nic Hamilton wins the third stage of the Tour of South Africa, in front of Rocchetti, Cosnefroy and Stewart! A nice breakaway win for Nordstrom, though I don't want to be in the team bus once he hears what happened behind him...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0016.jpg

Pichon takes fifth, but we'll have to see if there's enough of a gap to make his attack worthwhile...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0017.jpg

Redecker easily wins the bunch sprint, in from of Sweeting, who actually tried to join the breakaway earlier! Ulissi, Ignatiev and Flügel complete the top 10. All other puncheurs finish safely in the pack, with the exception of Edmondson, who lost over 10 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/3/PCM0018.jpg

Okay, so the aftermath. Despite Pichon doing everything in his power to prevent it from happening, Hamilton takes the leader's jersey! Pichon actually moves up to 4th, only one second behind Roux and Bystrom. With the TTT coming up and a loss of the leader's jersey being inevitable, one could say that Nordstrom had the perfect tactics here I guess... But it didn't look like that for a long time, that's for sure.

Hamilton and Pichon also moved to second and third in the points classification, but Roux is still the leader due to his stage win. Cosnefroy takes the young rider jersey. But things are bound to change again tomorrow. See you then!
