Tour of South Africa - Stage 2
Vien
Tour of South Africa – Stage 2

Welcome to the second stage of the Tour of South Africa, from Maseru to Upington. The stage is quite similar to yesterday's stage, in which pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Bystrom took the win stage and the leader's jersey. However, the stage is a little bit tougher, so we might see some longer-distance attacks this time.

Nevertheless, the favourites are the same: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kinoshita as the big gun, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Flügel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Froome. Though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Schreurs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ulissi are still very notable names in case of a sprint.

The high amount of KoM sprints also means this classification will change completely. Therefore, we might expect a lot of riders trying to join the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0006.jpg

Actually, a breakaway was quickly formed:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xrs.png Kaislavuo, GC 122th (+”20)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Thomson, GC 177th (+12”33)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Lasinis, GC 175th (+12”33)

The latter two must've discussed this yesterday!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0007.jpg

Kaislavuo takes the first KoM sprint, ahead of Thomson and Lasinis, who struggled a bit on this hill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0008.jpg

Same results on the second climb, looks like Kaislavuo is on his way to a KoM jersey!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0009.jpg

Kaislavuo also takes the third KoM sprint, and drops Lasinis. That means he now has 18 points and is virtually in the KoM jersey!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0010.jpg

However that will be the final points he's getting this stage, as Repsol and Meiji already caught him and Thomson with 48 kilometres to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0011.jpg

Onto the final climb then, which consists of two parts, with 11 kilometres to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Sanchez Gil is setting a high pace for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Bystrom. He's going so fast that the two made a small gap!pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kinoshita has to get out of the saddle to follow them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0012.jpg

Kinoshita closed the gap, but a new gap has been created. The top 5 riders are now:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Sanchez Gil
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Bystrom
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kinoshita
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Ulissi
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Jallays!

Behind them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Dowsett is trying to lead the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0013.jpg

Further away are riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Betancourt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Pichon, who have some catching up to do!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0014.jpg

Dowsett clears the gap on the finish of the first part of the climb, and uses his speed to try and get away on the downhill! Bystrom tries to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0015.jpg

Kinoshita catches Dowsett and tries the same thing now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0016.jpg

He creates a gap of 20 seconds! Behind them, the peloton is still quite complete. Who is going to chase him in the final kilometres?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0017.jpg

It's Fablok, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Ignatiev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Froome. But things aren't going fast enough for Ulissi, as he tries to close the gap himself!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0018.jpg

The peloton (107 riders) seems to be together again. Kinoshita only has 8 seconds left with 4 kilometres to go. Bystrom fell back a bit, it's now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Ignatiev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Prevar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Dowsett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Roche and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Flügel near the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0019.jpg

Kinoshita and Ulissi officially get caught by Ignatiev with two kilometres to go, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Costa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Roux are storming up from the left for an early sprint!

A main group has now been created with 31 riders. No notable names have dropped so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0020.jpg

Under the red kite, Costa seems to have burned out, and Roux takes over the main position! Though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Navardauskas is trying to reach Costa's wheel... Was Costa just trying to lead out Navardauskas then?

Behind them, Ígnatiev – Prevar – Roche – Edmondson and Simon. The bigger puncheurs are all behind them, and likely won't get a victory here!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0021.jpg

Roux can smell the stage win already, though Ignatiev is coming up fast. Costa and Navardauskas don't seem to have the punch anymore. Schreurs and Kreder are coming out of nowhere on the left though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0022.jpg

500 metres to go. Ignatiev seems to be in pole position now! Roux went just too early, but will try to stay second.

Costa in third, but he seems to be very tired. Schreurs, Kinoshita, Kreder and Pichon all with very good speed, and can still snatch a victory if Ignatiev collapses.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0023.jpg

200 metres and Roux seems to have found some fresh air! He's gaining inches on Ignatiev again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0024.jpg

Yes, it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Anthony Roux after all!!! The Frenchman looked to have started his sprint too early, but no one managed to reach him in the end. He finishes in front of Ignatiev, who should wonder what would've been possible if he didn't close the gap to Kinoshita earlier for his leader, Froome.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0025.jpg

Laurent Pichon takes third, in front of Kinoshita and Kreder. All other puncheurs managed to finish in the first group, though GCN's leader Hategeta was one of the three riders in this group who took it a bit too easily near the end and lost 44 seconds due to a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0026.jpg

Anthony Roux also takes the GC and points jersey. All the others are still in striking distance though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0028.jpg

Jesse Kaislavuo is glad that no puncheur planned a long-distance attack here, as he takes the KoM jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0029.jpg

And Paulus is still leading the U25 classicifaction!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/SouthAfrica/2/PCM0030.jpg

That's it for today. Join us tomorrow for what could be the only mass sprint finish in South Africa this year!
