Tour of Eritrea
Stage 6: Dekemhare - Mendefera 178.7 km
Today stage will take place in the Debub Region (also called Southern Region) in the area surrounding the region capital Mendefera.
Archaeologic evidence have proved that Mendefera (formerly Adi Ugri) have existed at least back to 5 century B.C. and evolved into an city during the Aksumite Empire ( from 100 AD to about 900 AD)
Like many other locations in Eritrea, it was just a relative small town when the Italians arrived in the 1800’s, but grew into a city in the 1930’s with Italians establishing small industries, and transportation networks. Today the Metropolitan area houses about 60.000 people.
The hilly stage will include a maximum of 40 KoM points, which could in theory be collected by a single riders, making it very important in the final KoM result.
It will be a hard and long stage, with constant hilly climbs and a 2.5 km uphill finish with slopes above 10% may also provide for some serious gaps that may shake the GC.
A sunny day, but wins at 10-15 km/h.
Villella kick off the morning breakaway followed by Dall'Oste Le Gac Pedrero Robov and Venter
The six riders build a lead of more than two minutes, but then another group of four riders attack from the peloton Bissinger, Grippo, Hibatullah and Larsen
With 5 km to the first KoM sprint the two groups unite, distance it this point 2’44
Best placed amongst the 10 riders are Dall'Oste 26th at 13’16, Pedrero 30th at 14’34 and Venter 32nd at 14’57
Best in KoM Grippo 2nd with 31 points and Bissinger 4th with 23 points.
At this point also KoM leader Vlasov attacks from the peloton
Bissinger attacks for the KoM and splits the group, but Grippo got more power and eventually he takes it.
Virtual KoM
Grippo37 Vlasov34 Monsalve24
Vlasov join the breakaway between the first two KoM climbs, while Hibatullah is really struggling and never gets back, hanging with more than a minute when the 2nd KoM climb starts.
Peloton at 4’29
Grippo also takes the 2nd KoM
Virtual KoM

Over the 50 km before the next KoM climb, it is mainly Ayubowan! taking the workload in the peloton, slowly bringing the gap down, Chatarunga and especially Bettiol pulling. Also Nordstrom - BioWare ( Boivin), World Cycling Centre ( Lay) showing some interest in controlling the stage.

Larsen lose almost a minute in the climb.
Virtual KoM
Grippo61 Vlasov37 Dall'Oste34
Grippo have secured the KoM win.
In the peloton it is Ndayisenga leading in this period.
Again we have seen a split on the climb, the bunch reduced to 65 riders, best placed victim GC 21th Gilanipoor
New attack from the bunch, initiated by Juul-Jensen , behind him Barrio Betancourt Gougeard Palini Pichon and Stuyven
At this point the breakaway has 1’34”, 17.4 km left.
13.5 km left
Dall'Oste attacks from the leading group, this is the situation:
At 12” Grippo Le Gac Robov Venter
At 49” Barrio Betancourt Juul-Jensen Pichon
At 1’31” Palini Stuyven
At 1’50” Gougeard Larsen
At 1’59 peloton, 58 riders.

Dall'Oste was reeled back by the pursuit, the first group has now grown to 9 riders: Dall'Oste Grippo Le Gac Robov Venter Barrio Betancourt Juul-Jensen Pichon
First Roche and soon after Roglič attack from the bunch.
6 km left, only the last descent and final climb to the line left.
Juul-Jensen attacks from the leading group, with Betancourt at wheel.
At 40” Roche Palini
Stuyven
At 56” Roglič
The Peloton at 1’10”
GC 2nd Berhane now in trouble at 2’12”
5 km left.
Roglič was reeled in.
Pinot lost contact, now 46” behind the peloton, Berhane 1’17”, Ji 2’59”
Juul-Jensen and Betancourt was caught.
3 km left,
Roche Palini
Stuyven have caught up with the first group, 12 riders now in the lead.
Just as the group is about to start the final climb, Juul-Jensen attacks again.
With 2.5 km left only Juul-Jensen got 16” to the peloton, everyone else was reeled in.
Now just 33 riders left in the bunch, most important now also GC19 Poljanski was dropped.
First under the red kite is Juul-Jensen, he got 24” to the group behind.
This is the order of the riders making up the favorite group.
Yates in front of Talansky Betancourt, Ndayisenga in front of Kudus Pichon Honkisz Robov Krizek Silva Kiserlovski Roche Roglič Kwiatkowski De la Cruz Barrio Cerny Caruso Monsalve Stuyven Le Gac Moscon Palini Zingle Nardin Dall'Oste Venter Senni Grippo Bennett
500 meters left for Juul-Jensen, he got 25”
The front of the group behind (21 riders), Yates still leading for Talansky
Kudus moving forward fast, now between the two Podium Ambition riders.
Behind him Ndayisenga and Betancourt almost side by side.
Silva have cought up to Ndayisenga’s wheel.
Them a small gap down to Pichon, Stuyven, Kwiatkowski
Most significant development at this point, race leader Monsalve have been dropped, now sitting in a group at 1’01”
With 21” to the next rider, Juul-Jensen has plenty of time to celebrate this win.
In a close uphill sprint Kudus 2nd in front Betancourt 3nd, Talansky 4th and Yates 5th all at 22”
Silva 6th, Kiserlovski 7th, Kwiatkowski 8th, De la Cruz 9th and Honkisz round of top ten, these and another 13 riders all at 34”
Monsalve comes in with a group at 1'57, he will lose the race lead and fall to 3rd, behind Merhawi Kudus and Michal Kwiatkowski
This was Christopher Juul-Jensen first stage win in Tour of Eritrea, his only participation as far as I can tell.
Without any stage wins Merhawi Kudus won the 2018 Tour of Eritrea by avoiding any significant time losses on the three difficult stages.
Last year’s winner Michal Kwiatkowski 2nd, only the time bonus Kudus got today preventing him from this third race win in Eritrea
Yonathan Monsalve with a great day in the mountains was looking so strong, even today he was seemingly able to keep up on the hard punchy route, but on the final kilometre he was done. Third though is not bad with a stage win and days in the leader jersey.
Nacer Bouhanni took the points lead, (nice to see that go to a sprinter) and Chiaffredo Grippo with a very good day in the breakaway took the KoM lead.
To top the race win Repsol - Netflix also 1st and 2nd in youth with Merhawi Kudus and Valens Ndayisenga
World Cycling Centre won the team competition
