Stage 2: Massaua - Massaua 139.5 km


The 2nd stage is a circuit race in and around Massawa.
Massawa developed into an important port city form about 600-700 AD onwards, reportedly having the oldest mosque in Africa build by "the companions" (aṣ-ṣaḥābah) of Muhammad. Massawa later became an important African outpost of the Ottoman Empire, captured in 1557.

The route is 10 rounds, containing a short hilly climb with 7-8% slopes, but seemingly flat enough to provide for a mass sprint finish as we also see from the favourite list, only containing top sprinters.

The sun is shining today, in Africa that means unbelievable hot. The domestics will have to get a lot of water for their team leaders.
