Tour of Eritrea

Stage1: Mendefera – Dekemhare

The first stage of Tour of Eritrea starts in Mendefera formerly known as Adi Ugri, the town dates back to 5th century B.C., becoming an important city during the Aksumite Empire from 100 AD. Today Mendefera has a metropolitan area population of about 64.000 people. We finish in Dekemhare, a town developed during Italian colonization in the beginning of the 20th century.

The route is quite flat, but the final KoM climb although rather easy, finish with just 4.5 km to the line and may make it harder for the teams to organize a train and for the pure sprinters to get the perfect position for the coming sprint, may also be beneficial with good downhill ability.

The weather is unusual rough today, hard rain and winds at 40 km/hour on the startline.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Chatarunga opens the race after a few km, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Vlasov right behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Eritrea/S1/2.jpg

The duo do not fight for the sprint and more surprising not the first KoM climb either, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Chatarunga wins the sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Vlasov the KoM.

The peloton is taking it easy at this point the distance is 5’50” with 130 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Eritrea/S1/3.jpg

When the next sprint comes they may have received reprimand from the managers over the radio, at least this time we see some fierce fighting, before pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Chatarunga picks up the points and bonus seconds.

They build a lead of almost 8 minutes, then with about 110 km left the peloton starts the chase, it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Asgreen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Schoffmann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Banaszek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Palini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Gaudu pulling the bunch.

9 riders now forming the paceline and the distance is melting fast, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Asgreen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Schoffmann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Banaszek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Crncevic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Palini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Sanogo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Caruso, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Gaudu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Vincent

The breakaway again fighting for the sprint won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Chatarunga.
Distance 3’22” with 52 km left. The weather conditions absolute horrible, rain still pounding down and a 30 km/hour wind directly into their face.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Eritrea/S1/5.jpg

The final KoM comes with just 5km km to the finish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Chatarunga attacks but can’t get rid of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Vlasov who counters and takes the last KoM and the first KoM jersey.
The peloton is just 28” behind.

At the bottom of the downhill after the KoM, the chasers from the peloton swings off right, while at the left side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Caruso leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni gets a small gap to the riders behind, except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Lay sitting on the wheel of Bouhanni

Behind it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xer.png Tewelde trying to close up, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Boivin in 6th position in the group, behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van der Sande, at the left behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xva.png Westling, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Pelucchi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Feiereisen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Haddi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Appollonio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Perera in that order all in the rear end of this group of about 25 riders. Everyone else may struggle to get back in this, with a now very stretched out peloton.

3 km to the line, breakaway still at 20”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Eritrea/S1/7.jpg

2.2 km to the line and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Caruso is about to overtake the breakaway riders.

Just to mention at the right side the previous group of chasers are still almost on par with the Caruso group but unlikely to have much sprint left, they are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Sanogo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Le Gac, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Krigbaum, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petelin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Gaudin.

Back to the sprint, behind Caruso pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Lay now moved up at his right side, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xer.png Tewelde closing in just a cycling length behind Bouhanni’s left

Behind Tewelde some 6-8 meters down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Boivin with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van der Sande and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Pelucchi.
At Pelucchi rear left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Palini, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xva.png Pfingsten, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Stepniak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Juul-Jensen almost on line, behind Pfingsten, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xva.png Walscheid with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xva.png Westling, and on their right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Feiereisen with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petit, at his right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Appollonio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Eritrea/S1/8.jpg

1.5 km left.
With a 36 km/hour wind on his back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Lay use his exceptional acceleration passing Caruso with a stunning 77 km/h, suddenly opening a 6-7 meter gap, behind him we now have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xer.png Tewelde side by side, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Caruso in 4th still attempting to get a result for himself, and on his wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Sanogo last rider left from the peloton train.

Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Boivin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Pelucchi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van der Sande, and on their right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Krigbaum also from the peloton train.

Another 14 riders close behind, in this order they are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Vlasov from the break, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Stepniak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petelin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Le Gac, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Gaudin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Chatarunga from the break, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Feiereisen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Kvist, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Juul-Jensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Palini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xva.png Pfingsten, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Appollonio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xva.png Westling

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/Eritrea/S1/9.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Lay first under the red kite, looking very strong still with a nice gap, behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xer.png Tewelde is now clearly in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni

Coming a lot closer from behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Boivin still with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Pelucchi clued.

At their left rear young domestic pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Sanogo still hanging in, his mother much be so proud if she is watching. Further left also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Caruso still keeping up after his lead-out duties was over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van der Sande lost contact with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Pelucchi but seemingly about to overtake Sanogo and could still make a result here. At his left rear pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Stepniak.

Closing in fast at the right side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Feiereisen with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Kvist with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Appollonio, the two top favorites coming back now, but is it too late? Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Krigbaum in this group.

0,5 km left
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Lay still leading
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni had a good last 500 meters, now slightly in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xer.png Tewelde and they are also a few meters closer to Lay.

In 4th position pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Pelucchi have overtaken pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Boivin and also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van der Sande in 6th position moving up Boivin’s left rear.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Appollonio side by side have passed their respective lead-outs, now just 2 meters behind the above mentioned.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Feiereisen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Stepniak in their slipstream.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Kvist and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xva.png Westling together at 11 and 12 position 4-5 meters further back, another 2-3 meters down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Caruso, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Krigbaum and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Sanogo

200 meters left
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni very fast over the last 300m, now almost on par with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Lay

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xer.png Tewelde not able to keep up with Bouhanni still a few meters back.

Another 2-3 meters down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Appollonio who has caught up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Pelucchi.
In between those two pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petit lagging about 1 meter, and on par with him far left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Van der Sande and behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Boivin

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni wins the first stage of Tour of Eritrea in Dekemhare clearly outsprinting pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Lay (2nd) over the last 500 meters

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xer.png Tewelde 3rd holding a clear gap to those behind.

Then a relative close sprint for 4th, won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Appollonio in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Petit 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Pelucchi 6th,
