Berlin – Berlin 215.7 km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/berlin/profile.jpg

It is a beautiful morning in Berlin, just a few clouds on the sky and just a light breeze.

A breakaway form already on the first small bump, after about 10 km we got pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Eiking, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Takenouchi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Tiller and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Vlasov leading with a bit more than 30”, but the pace in the peloton is still hard and they do not make it.

Another small hill before the stage flat out, and another attack pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Petrus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Rodríguez and again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Tiller

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/berlin/1.jpg

With some 140 km left, the trio have built up a lead of about 7’30”
Up to this point, we have mainly seen Iberia leading the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Brockhoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Bagdonas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Gallego Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Nych, but also other team have shown a bit of interest taking a few turns.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/berlin/2.jpg

After that many teams deside to take part in the chase, sending riders to the front. Most active in this period are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Azman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Bagdonas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Brockhoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Burghardt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Gallego Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Goldstein, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Nych, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Owen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Reckweg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Sirironnachai, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Walsleben

We now got just 40 km left and the distance is down to 2’07”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Ford attacks from the peloton but never get more that 20”

33 km left, distance 1’46”
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Ford attacks again and behind him also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Chatarunga accelerating.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/berlin/3.jpg

20 km left,
The peloton did not allow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Ford and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Chatarunga to get any substantial gap, after they were caught the peloton did slow down a little bit, anyway the trio in front has just a 1’11” gap left, so it is very unlikely that they will make it to the finish line, even though they have regained a few seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/berlin/4.jpg

We see a chance in the peloton, where Fablok - Bank BGZ takes over the lead with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png D. Ignatiev pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Nechita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Cohen, up to the 13 km mark.
After that is it riders from Iberia - Team Degenkolb and Kraftwerk Man Machine forming the pace line, first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Nych then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Kurth and finally pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Brockhoff , crushing the dream of the breakaway riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/berlin/6.jpg

It seems we never get the traditional long spearhead train we often see, it is more like two teams Iberia and Kraftwerk fighting for and changing position all the time, also Podium Ambition well placed with several riders.

3.5 km left, the situation is:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden...pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Gough..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/berlin/7.jpg

With 2,7 km left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado takes the lead for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb, now able to lay some distance to the Kraftwerk Man Machine train (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Gough, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Willwohl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Lander sitting clued to Degenkolb in a perfect position to make a great result.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss at Cavendish wheel.
SPAR – Shimano, (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Suryadi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Guerao) and Podium Ambition (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Nelson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ewan) on par with Goss.

Right now looking perfect for Iberia but a long way to the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/berlin/8.jpg

2 km left
The Iberia train has further distanced the competitors, they now have a clear gap.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden swings of and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado opens the sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Lander still clued to Degenkolb.

Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Gough has also swung of. We got three trains almost on par:
Right:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Willwohl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Van Asbroeck
Middle:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Nelson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ewan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Appollonio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Saber, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Roelandts
Left:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Suryadi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Guerao

Many not mentioned riders are still attached in a cluster behind Roelandts and might come back, but not likely for a top result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/berlin/9.jpg

The Iberia train is not as fast from km 2 to 1 and the competitors regain contact.
But it is still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Lander first under the red kite.

Almost on par with Lander, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Nelson for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ewan and right behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Suryadi for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Guerao.

Behind these two top sprinters, we have a lot of riders spread out over the road, all attempting to find the best position to make the best out of the last km.

This is the order of these riders, but they are very close, sometimes just a few cm in front of each other:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Appollonio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Willwohl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Saber, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Roelandts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Van Asbroeck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Granjel Cabrera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Gough, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Vanderbiest, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Rowe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png M. Ignatiev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png D. Ignatiev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Arashiro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Baugnies

Behind him a substantial gap to the next rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/berlin/10.jpg

500 meters to go.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado have done all he could for his team, he falls back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Lander has left the wheel of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb they now lead almost side by side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Nelson with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ewan now at Degenkolb’s well.

In next row behind Ewan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Guerao at the right side moving in on Merino Criado, at the left very close to Ewan pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Appollonio

The distances is still very short, next a cluster of 10 riders still perfectly in contact with the riders in front, the order is this: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Saber, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Roelandts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Granjel Cabrera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Vanderbiest, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Van Asbroeck.

Very open with these small gaps, but if you got something this is last moment to kick the throttle down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/berlin/11.jpg

300 meters to go
Between the first duo it is still the same, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb just a bit in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Lander

Nelson also done now, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ewan in 3nd position and have to be fast if he want to beat the two in front lacking more than a cycle length. In fourth position pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Guerao, very close at Ewan’s right side and surely still a podium contender.

Actually also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Appollonio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme could easily take a podium here if it works out for them and not for others.

In next row (in this order but so close) pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Saber, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Roelandts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni

After that all the previously mentioned sprinters still close, this is THE traditional mass sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/berlin/12.jpg

If you love a surprise win this was not the day, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Lander had used it all and fell back in the end, but as we will see he made a great result anyway, way above what could be expected from him.

Top favorite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png John Degenkolb very strong of the last 300 m, wins in Berlin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/HC/berlin/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_t3a.png Ewan 2nd in a close fight with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Guerao, photo decision between those two.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Lander 4th, as mentioned super race from him, just holds of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Saber 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Appollonio 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Vantomme 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Bouhanni 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Roelandts 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Goss rounds of top 10

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish 11th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_azt.png Granjel Cabrera 12th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Van Asbroeck 13th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Vanderbiest 14th and to round of top 15 pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs, I guess the most disappointed of everyone today.
