Scandinavia Open Road Race
Stage 2 195.9 km
The rather long route may serve to help the classic riders with some stamina Skujins, Gesink and McCarthy may benefit from that, the length of the climbs I don’t think will help the true climbers much, maybe just a little.
The decisive moment will be the category 1 with summit just 5km before the finish line, we can expect to see the favorites fight it out here and no doubt Ponzi is the favorite to win on a short hard climb like that.
Beautiful weather in Sweden today sunny with on wind.
A KoM climb coming up right after the start provide for early action, 11 riders attack for the KoM, Anderberg, Fabbro, Ford, Gebremedhin, Giannoutsos, Hofstede, Janse van Rensburg, Lammertink, Martinez, Sagan and Wetterhall
Janse van Rensburg takes the KoM
After the KoM another 7 riders break free of the peloton and later joins the leading group, Bagdonas, Cruz, Neilands, Novardianto, Stash, Van Niekerk and Varga
But a group of 18 riders is too much for the peloton, Ranaweera, Kemboi, Bettiol, Silva and Egidio join forces and close it down.
The next KoM comes after about 47 km and we see a new attempt, Ford, Budenieks and Martinez
Ford wins the KoM
Virtual KoM
Ford6 Janse van Rensburg5 Budenieks 4
Martinez on paper the strongest puncher in the group, Ford the best rouleur. But Budenieks have good legs and time the two cat4 KoM sprints perfect, leading the KoM after this first section of climbs
Virtual KoM after the first four climbs.
Budenieks 14 Ford10 Martinez 6
The trio also fight it out for the intermediate sprint, Ford take it in front of Budenieks
Peloton at 3’50 with 100 km left
From here the peloton up the pace a little slowly cutting down the distance, Aramendía, Richardson and Ligthart carrying the workload.
Budenieks attacks for the cat2 and wins it.
Martinez seem just not to have the right day, and struggles on the climb.
Virtual KoM Budenieks 24 Ford18 Martinez 12
Two more catagorie 4 KoM’s, and now it looks like Ford’s skills as a stronger and more resistance rouleur comes into play he wins both.
Virtual KoM Budenieks 30 Ford28 Martinez 13
Meanwhile Martinez is back in the peloton, and also an attempt by Gougeard was neutralised.
With 56 km left, surprisingly we get a very early attack from much more competent punchers, a bold move if they are caught but brilliant if they make it to the final climb first.
Afonso, Barrio, Boily and
Quevedo
The duo in front has 2’12 to the peloton at this point reduced to 146 riders.
Group Afonso pick up the duo, over the intermediate sprint, creating a stage leader group of 6 riders, but the peloton have upped the pace led by Barbero, Mudarra and Landa and the distance is just 30” when the front group sprint it out for the bonus seconds.
Afonso wins the sprint in front of a now very exhausted Ford
Budenieks and Ford are reeled in shortly after the sprint
Group Afonso fight hard for it and extend the lead to 1’05, but now Hugo Boss get some needed assistance from Kumara, Dulanjana and Felline sealing the destiny of the breakaway, it is over with 20 km to the line.
No more attempts are made before we get to the final climb, as soon as it starts acceleration from Felline. Behind him Bobridge, Skujins, Dyball and Demare
9.1 km left.
This was on the early sections of the climb with gradient of 2.5-4.3 %, the acceleration from Felline probably mainly meant to position Demare, and they never get a serious gap to the peloton, but race favorite Ponzi never the less decides to accelerate and close the small gap.
They reach the much steeper part of the climb, and a new hard acceleration this time Skujins.
Bobridge quick to response and so is Ponzi, Demare and Felline seemingly not able to respond this time.
8.4 km to the line.
2.0 km to the top 7.0 to the line, slopes above 10%
In front Skujins still leading with Bobridge and Ponzi at wheel.
At 18” Lutsenko has attacked from the group behind him.
At 30” Felline, Demare, Kelderman, McCarthy Claeys Schreurs and Koretzky
At 1’01 Boswell
Peloton at 1’34 129 riders
1 km to the top, 6km to the line
The trio in front continues to extend the lead.
At 29” Felline, Demare, Kelderman have joined Lutsenko
At 1’04 McCarthy and Claeys Koretzky M. Schreurs and Boswell
At 1’48 Durasek and Dowsett have opened a small gap to the peloton, 126 riders at 2’05
Skujins continues to lead in front first over the top in front of Ponzi and Bobridge
Virtual KoM Budenieks 30 Ford28 Skujins16
At 38” Felline, Demare, Kelderman and Lutsenko
At 1’33 McCarthy and Claeys Koretzky M. Schreurs and Boswell
At 2’09 Durasek and Dowsett
Peloton at 2’30” 126 riders
Over the next 4 km up to the red kite not much to report, group Demare coming a little closer now at 30”, while every other group has lost additional time to the leaders.
Felline have lost contact with his group and so has Boswell
The peloton reduced to 55 riders in the climb.
Skujins still doing all the hard work in the leading trio
In the 2nd group it is img]https://pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png[/IMG] Demare in front of Kelderman under the red kite.
Ponzi wins the sprint for the stage in front of Bobridge
Skujins 3rd losing 9” over the last few 100 meters, but what an impressive stage he delivered doing all the hard work in the winning group from the start of the brutal climb up to the final sprint.
Lutsenko opens the sprint in the next group and they can’t follow, 4th in +32”
Demare 5th and Kelderman 6th both at +36”
With 700m left Felline have 15” to the group behind him, but he is completely drained, and they catch him almost on the finish line.
Schreurs 7th Claeys 8th , Felline 9th and Koretzky rounds of top 10, all at 1’30 also McCarthy 11th get the same time.
Back to back stage win for Simone Ponzi at the point hard to see him lose this race, but with Jack Bobridge at only 11” it is of course not over at all. Toms Skujins did all the hard work today and it paid off moving from 16th to 3rd in GC.
Simone Ponzi extended his point lead over Jack Bobridge to 10 points
With a great performance in the breakaway Kristaps Budenieks will wear the KoM jersey tomorrow.
Calvin Watson came in at 3’24 in the same time as his closest compeditors and keeps the Youth lead.
Team Puma – SAP took the team lead today.
