Stage 2 - Ivano-Frankivsk > Chernyk The traditional hilltop finish in Chernyk as the next key stage here. Obviously, it's the day, where the puncheurs need to gain time on the TT specialists. The hilltop finish is quite challenging and there's definitely a chance for bigger gaps. GC leader Coppel may still fancy his chances to limit the damage, while other riders like Cornu, Koren or Keizer may struggle against the best of the day.
Pluchkin had a strong prologue and just like Coppel, he will try to limit the losses against the likes of Lutsenko, McCarthy, Izagirre, Froome or Dowsett. Except of Izagirre, the best puncheurs definitely need to distance Coppel/Pluchkin by several minutes, as those top timetrial riders will certainly gain quite some minutes in tomorrow's 44km TT challenge!
Two riders (Frankiny, Pavarin) went clear right from the start and a few other riders tried to join them:
Roson, Bernas, Suryadi, Mestric.. as well as Rovny, Pasqualon, Eiking and Manfred.. they failed though and instead, it's two other riders joining the two early escapees with now 110km to go:
Frankiny
Pavarin (who takes the first of two mountain sprints ahead of Nzeke/Frankiny)
Nzeke
Khodayari
Pavarin would also take the first intermediate sprint, beating Khodayari and Nzeke easily..
Nzeke takes the second (and final) mountain sprint ahead of Pavarin and Khodayari though:
Provisional KoM Nzeke 10, Pavarin 10, Frankiny/Khodayari 2
There's still 16pts to be rewarded to the eventual stage-winner..
The peloton is led by Ayubowan!, Popo4Ever and Carrefour and those teams look in control of the race so far: 26km to go now and the breakaway is a minute ahead with the pack going for a steady pace in this pursuit.
The first riders have been dropped on the short climbs:
Robert (GC 8th)
Kovalev
Ghyselinck
Barth
Sergent
Golovash
Ford as currently the very last rider in the race!
While the breakaway group would also contest for the final intermediate sprint (Pavarin takes it again), their fight is over with now just 9km remaining:
Bettiol setting the pace at the front of the peloton, that is down to 100 riders in the meantime. A few more TT riders could not hang on anymore:
Atkins
Li
Schädlich
Bettiol is done with this work at the bottom of the final climb 'Horni Krupka' - a 5.9km ascent with average slopes of 8.8% abd a couple of steep sectors. The first big move comes with still 5.2km to go - and it's a well needed early move:
McCarthy already lost one minute in the prologue and he knows, he has to gain big minutes today!
A strong attack from McCarthy, who quickly established a notable gap about 40 seconds here:
Lutsenko as the next rider going clear from the pack, facing a 27 seconds gap on McCarthy with still 4.9km to the hilltop!
4.6km to go and a few more riders try to follow on those two strong moves: Lutsenko is already 34 seconds ahead of the pack now!
Pluchkin jumps behind..
Coppel follows immediately!
At the front of the pack, there's Jans working for Izagirre..
Ignatiev
Keizer
Cornu
Khodayari
Mehr-Wenige
Koren
Dees
Dowsett on the further positions at the front of the peloton..
Jans with some great work for Izagirre then, as he bridges across Pluchkin with now 3.9km to go:
Pluchkin
Jans
Izagirre
Coppel forming a new chasing group, 17 seconds ahead of the pack (where Ignatiev is doing the pace now)!
Lutsenko already 59 seconds ahead though, McCarthy further 22 seconds!
3.3km to go for the peloton, where we see some further attacks and another group formed:
Pluchkin with another acceleration from his group with Izagirre/Coppel!
26 seconds behind, a group of 7 riders went clear from the peloton (87 riders):
Bille
Bellis
Ignatiev
Dowsett
Mehr-Wenige
Koren
Bazhkou
McCarthy 34 seconds ahead of Lutsenko and with just 2.6km to the hilltop!
Pluchkin indeed opens up a gap on Izagirre/Coppel: 16 seconds, to precisive, with 2.9km to go! Jans can't help anymore, he drops back to group Ignatiev/Koren/Dowsett..
Izagirre tries to jump behind Pluchkin now!
At the front of the race, McCarthy has just 1.6km to the finish and he grows his gap to Lutsenko even further: 54 seconds by now!
2.2km to go for Pluchkin, who's 33 seconds behind Lutsenko..
Izagirre catches up to him and the gap on Coppel quickly went up to 52 seconds!
Coppel more and more suffers from his effort to stay with Pluchkin and Izagirre and he's now accompanied by Bazhkou, Ignatiev and Bille with still 2.4km to go..
A few seconds behind, a group with Koren, Bellis, Jans, Dowsett and Mehr-Wenige..
..and the peloton with Cornu, Keizer and Froome is further 24 seconds in arrears - with Barbin attacking now:
McCarthy still knows, that he has to gain as much time as possible and so does not celebrate his commanding victory today! He crosses the line as the well deserved stage winner, going clear from the pack with 5km to go and holding off a strong solo chaser like Lutsenko easily.
Lutsenko still has 600metres to the finish, as the gap to McCarthy has grown to 1'29" in the meantime! He struggles to raise his pace and Pluchkin/Izagirre come closer with now just 17 seconds disadvantage..
47 seconds further behind, Bazhkou rode away from the next group: Barbin and Ignatiev! Barbin with a great ride on the last few hundred metres, going past the chasing groups easily. He also goes past Ignatiev now, who does not look like he could counter this acceleration!
Bille 15 seconds in arrears and Coppel definitely struggles big time now, dropping back to group Koren/Dowsett:
+ 1'51" for Lutsenko and Izagirre
+ 2'00" for Pluchkin
So Izagirre almost caught Lutsenko and while McCarthy definitely rode an impressive stage today, it's been a good day for both Izagirre and Pluchkin, too! Also Lutsenko with a good 2nd place, of course, even though he might have lost more time on McCarthy, than he had thought of.
+ 2'52" for Bazhkou and Barbin
A sick ride by Barbin after attacking from the peloton rather late into the climb! But also a stunning ride from Bazhkou, who should definitely fancy his chances for a notable GC result eventually. Just like Izagirre and Pluchkin, he will gain quite some time on Coppel today!
+ 4'09" for a next group with Bellis taking a 7th place on the stage
Bille, Ignatiev, Dyrnes, Villella, Quevedo.. a few riders, who jumped away from the peloton late into the climb and going past some bigger names eventually..
+ 4'29" Froome
+ 4'39" Koren and Othman
+ 4'50" Dowsett
+ 4'57" for Coppel as 17th on the stage
He tried to hang on with the very best puncheurs, but eventually he paid the price by cracking on the final 1-2km of the climb! The gaps between him and guys like Izagirre and Pluchkin should be interesting now..
A few more smaller groups then and the peloton comes in with..
+ 6'29" for riders like Keizer, Cornu and Reus
Quite some heavy losses and they probably need a big day tomorrow then..
McCarthy finally celebrating his win on the podium! It's a great stage win for sure, but given the big gaps today, he may even hope for a notable GC result eventually:
1'14" on Izagirre as 2nd and 1'16" on Pluchkin as 3rd - that's probably not doable for McCarthy in tomorrow's long timetrial. Also Lutsenko as 4th (+ 1.37) is still within striking distance, as he's significally better in TTs than McCarthy!
Bazhkou (2.39) with a promising position as 5th.. Ignatiev (3.34), Coppel (4.12), Koren (4.13) inside the Top-10 as well.. so Coppel needs to gain three minutes on Izagirre and Pluchkin tomorrow: that's probably too much to fight for the GC win then, but he may at least aim for the podium and definitely the Top-5.
