Tour of California - Stage 6
Tamijo
Tour of California

Stage 6: Folsom – South Lake Tahoe 202.8 km

The stage starts in Folsom city, founded in 1855 by Joseph Libbey Folsom as Granite City, after his early death just thirty-eight years old, the town was renamed to Folsom in 1856. The town is widely known for its high security prison founded in 1880, further popularize by Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues”

We finish at South Lake Tahoe, John C. Fremont & Kit Carson found Lake Tahoe in 1844 at the time only known by Native American tribes. South Lake Tahoe is a city created by incorporation several smaller communities in the area in 1965, to my knowledge the oldest being Bijou, founded by Almon M. Taylor in 1864.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S6/0.jpg

The route is long and hard, the climbs seen one by one may seem rather innocent but the combined amount of climbing kilometers is gruesome, 4790m uphill. From Folsom we are heading into the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the first 130 km is basically all uphill, then we got about 40 km descent before the final 30 km over a hard climb to Daggert Summit before the summit finish at South Lake Tahoe.

The sun is shining, but may be a bit cold in the mountains more worrying though is the wind expected to be about 45 km/hour most of the day

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S6/1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Landa opens the race with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Boonratanathanakorn at wheel, they are soon joined by another seven riders to form the morning breakaway, the others are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Bostner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Edet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Grippo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Scheit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Van Niekerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Vilela and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Vinhas.

The best climber in the group is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Vinhas (+18’01), best in GC is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Van Niekerk 48th at 11’19”

Three riders most interesting in the mountain competision:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Vilela 4th (23p) pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Bostner 9th (15p) pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Boonratanathanakorn 12th (8p)

They don’t care about the intermediate sprint

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S6/2.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Scheit opens the first KoM sprint, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Bostner takes it in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Vilela

2nd KoM sprint, the more important cat.1 at Sly Park Rd, again it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Bostner first over the top, which will take him to the Top of the KoM leaderboard.

Virtual KoM:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Bostner37

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S6/3.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Bostner also takes the next KoM further cementing his lead.
In the peloton it is Gazelle leading, mainly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Hofland carring the workload. The distance at this point is 5’07”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S6/4.jpg

After another 50 km mainly uphill, we get to the next KoM, Gazelle still leading, now mainly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Furdi, he has cut the distance down to 2’14 almost single handed.

Up front pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Vinhas attacks and takes the KoM, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Bostner as 2nd extend his overall KoM lead.

Virtual KoM:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Bostner55

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Kastrantas33

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S6/5.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Vinhas now continues alone, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Bostner hanging behind when they get to the start of the next KoM, but with a surprising fast last km, he just passes in last second to claim another KoM win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S6/6.jpg

Over the top we also see attacks from the peloton, at first these groups pickup riders fallen back from the breakaway, but when we get to intermediate sprint in the vally between the climbs we have got one large group of 15 riders, 2’27” in front of the peloton, 31 km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Landa pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Boonratanathanakorn pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Bostner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Edet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Grippo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Scheit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Van Niekerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Vilela, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Vinhas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Zardini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Jeannesson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Rabottini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Fernandez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Declerq

In the meantime Puma – SAP have taken the lead in the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Bol leading over the flat section.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S6/7.jpg

Soon the reason for Puma’s acceleration become clear, the slope hit 6% and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Herklotz accelerate.

Over the next 5 km, 7 rider drop from the leading group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Landa pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Boonratanathanakorn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Bostner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Edet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Grippo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Scheit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Van Niekerk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Vilela

At the same time acceleration from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Martin followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Meintjes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Intxausti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kwiatkowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Arndt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Chevrier from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Herklotz join the leading group with 18 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S6/8.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Herklotz passes right trough the leading group, at first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Zardini sits on his wheel for about a kilometer, but he is forced to let go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Herklotz passes over Daggert Summit alone with 13.5 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Herklotz wins in South Lake Tahoe, this was his first win in Tour of California, his best result to this date was (as far as my research go) 40th in 2016, not surprising he was very young back then.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S6/12.jpg

At 45” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Arndt has gained time on his teammate, anyway what a fantastic day for Team Puma – SAP

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/S6/17.jpg

Michal Kwiatkowski took the race lead, with just 5” to Silvio Herklotz, Herklotz being the slightly better TT rider the final ITT will be interesting. Nikias Arndt 3rd at +58 with just 53” down to Ben Gastauer again the ITT will be interesting between the two.

Francesco Ginanni and Michal Kwiatkowski now shares the point lead.

With impressive 50 points Jaka Bostner took the KoM

Team Puma – SAP now leads the team competition, Silvio Herklotz the youth.
