Tour of California
Stage 6: Folsom – South Lake Tahoe 202.8 km
The stage starts in Folsom city, founded in 1855 by Joseph Libbey Folsom as Granite City, after his early death just thirty-eight years old, the town was renamed to Folsom in 1856. The town is widely known for its high security prison founded in 1880, further popularize by Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues”
We finish at South Lake Tahoe, John C. Fremont & Kit Carson found Lake Tahoe in 1844 at the time only known by Native American tribes. South Lake Tahoe is a city created by incorporation several smaller communities in the area in 1965, to my knowledge the oldest being Bijou, founded by Almon M. Taylor in 1864.
The route is long and hard, the climbs seen one by one may seem rather innocent but the combined amount of climbing kilometers is gruesome, 4790m uphill. From Folsom we are heading into the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the first 130 km is basically all uphill, then we got about 40 km descent before the final 30 km over a hard climb to Daggert Summit before the summit finish at South Lake Tahoe.
The sun is shining, but may be a bit cold in the mountains more worrying though is the wind expected to be about 45 km/hour most of the day
Landa opens the race with Boonratanathanakorn at wheel, they are soon joined by another seven riders to form the morning breakaway, the others are Bostner, Edet, Grippo, Scheit, Van Niekerk, Vilela and Vinhas.
The best climber in the group is Vinhas (+18’01), best in GC is Van Niekerk 48th at 11’19”
Three riders most interesting in the mountain competision:
Vilela 4th (23p) Bostner 9th (15p) Boonratanathanakorn 12th (8p)
They don’t care about the intermediate sprint
Scheit opens the first KoM sprint, but Bostner takes it in front of Vilela
2nd KoM sprint, the more important cat.1 at Sly Park Rd, again it is Bostner first over the top, which will take him to the Top of the KoM leaderboard.
Virtual KoM:
Bostner37 Kastrantas33 Vilela33
Bostner also takes the next KoM further cementing his lead.
In the peloton it is Gazelle leading, mainly Hofland carring the workload. The distance at this point is 5’07”
After another 50 km mainly uphill, we get to the next KoM, Gazelle still leading, now mainly Furdi, he has cut the distance down to 2’14 almost single handed.
Up front Vinhas attacks and takes the KoM, Bostner as 2nd extend his overall KoM lead.
Virtual KoM:
Bostner55 Vilela43 Kastrantas33
Vinhas now continues alone, Bostner hanging behind when they get to the start of the next KoM, but with a surprising fast last km, he just passes in last second to claim another KoM win.
Over the top we also see attacks from the peloton, at first these groups pickup riders fallen back from the breakaway, but when we get to intermediate sprint in the vally between the climbs we have got one large group of 15 riders, 2’27” in front of the peloton, 31 km to the line.
Landa Boonratanathanakorn Bostner, Edet, Grippo, Scheit, Van Niekerk, Vilela, Vinhas, Zardini, Jeannesson, Latour, Rabottini, Fernandez and Declerq
In the meantime Puma – SAP have taken the lead in the peloton, Bol leading over the flat section.
Soon the reason for Puma’s acceleration become clear, the slope hit 6% and Herklotz accelerate.
Over the next 5 km, 7 rider drop from the leading group Landa Boonratanathanakorn, Bostner, Edet, Grippo, Scheit, Van Niekerk and Vilela
At the same time acceleration from Martin followed by Meintjes, Intxausti, Kwiatkowski, Arndt and Chevrier from the peloton.
Herklotz join the leading group with 18 km left.
Herklotz passes right trough the leading group, at first Zardini sits on his wheel for about a kilometer, but he is forced to let go.
Herklotz passes over Daggert Summit alone with 13.5 km left.
At 1’41” Declerq
At 1’47” Zardini
At 2’04 Vinhas, Jeannesson, Rabottini, Kwiatkowski, Martin
At 2’20” Meintjes, Arndt, Chiarello
At 2’48” 44 riders with Intxausti, Shikai, Reis, Olivier, GC 2nd Gastauer, Youth leader Mohoric
At 4’10” 9 riders with Race leader Ginanni
Herklotz hits the final climb, just the last 5.3 km left for him.
At 2’12” Kwiatkowski, Declerq, Martin, Meintjes, Zardini, Arndt
At 2’47”
Chiarello, Poljanski, Intxausti, Koch, Reis, Salinas, Rabottini, Jeannesson, Vinhas
At 3’51” 22 riders with
Shikai, Olivier, GC 5th Koretzky, GC 7th Roche
At 4’39” GC 2nd Gastauer
Youth leader Mohoric
At 5’55” Race leader Ginanni, GC 6th Kangert
Just as the 2nd group passes under the 5 km banner Arndt attacks
1 km left for Herklotz, let’s take a final look at the situation before the summit.
At 1’05” Arndt
At 2’32” Martin, Kwiatkowski, Meintjes
At 2’44” Chiarello, Reis, Poljanski, Intxausti, Koch
At 3’24 Salinas, Rabottini, Jeannesson, Vinhas, Zardini, Declerq
At 4’14” 35 riders, Shikai, Olivier, Brenes, GC 2nd Gastauer, Youth leader Mohoric, GC 5th Koretzky, GC 7th Roche
At 6’13” Race leader Ginanni, GC 6th Kangert
Herklotz wins in South Lake Tahoe, this was his first win in Tour of California, his best result to this date was (as far as my research go) 40th in 2016, not surprising he was very young back then.
At 45” Arndt has gained time on his teammate, anyway what a fantastic day for Team Puma – SAP
Martin 3rd at 2’21” in front of Kwiatkowski 4th at 2’24” and Meintjes 5th at 2’34”
Chiarello 6th at 2'52” in front of Poljanski 7th getting same time.
Reis 8th at 3’01”, Intxausti 9th at 3’06” and Koch at 3’16” rounds of top 10
Race leader Ginanni comes in as 78th losing 9’16”, with also Kangert losing 8’42” a very costly day for Gazelle.
Michal Kwiatkowski took the race lead, with just 5” to Silvio Herklotz, Herklotz being the slightly better TT rider the final ITT will be interesting. Nikias Arndt 3rd at +58 with just 53” down to Ben Gastauer again the ITT will be interesting between the two.
Francesco Ginanni and Michal Kwiatkowski now shares the point lead.
With impressive 50 points Jaka Bostner took the KoM
Team Puma – SAP now leads the team competition, Silvio Herklotz the youth.
