Stage 5: Stockton - Elk Grove 179.1 km

The stage starts in Stockton, an inland port city located on the banks of San Joaquin River. Central Stockton was originally occupied by a native village named Pasasimas belonging to Yatchicumne branch of Yokuts. During the California Gold Rush the city was founded in 1848 by German settler Karl David Weber, also known as Charles Weber, building a spectacular estate at Weber Point.

We finish at Elk Grove, a city in Sacramento Metropolitan Area about 30 km south of central Sacramento. The city was originally founded as a posting station for the stagecoach in 1850 by James Hall, from 1868 the Central Pacific Railroad made a stop in the town. Traditionally Elk Grove was an agricultural area with farms and cattle ranches only recently developing into a large modern city.

A rather flat route in the Central Valley with just one cat.3 climb up to Pardee Dam near Buena Vista, we can expect a mass sprint finish. It is sunny, with little wind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Burke initiates the original breakaway attempt, but the peloton is very active this morning and neither the first nor a couple of other attempts was allowed to get any substantial distance, this was the riders in breaks not getting anywhere: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Basso, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Boonratanathanakorn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Burke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Cherkasov,pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Hofstetter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Landa pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Laporte, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Nych, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ino.png Okbamariam, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Uchima, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Vink

After 30 km we get what seems to be the breakaway of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Laporte, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Margaliot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Nych, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Postlberger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Zingle

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Zingle best placed in the GC 54th at 13’00”, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Laporte on paper best suited for this kind of stage a fine rouleur with a good finish.

They don’t care for the intermediate sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/5/3.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Laporte attacks for the KoM winning it in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Zingle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Nych, but as they have no previous KoM points it won’t affect the leaderboard.

The peloton is very relaxed today, obviously saving energy for tomorrows hard mountains, about 100 km to go, distance 7’09”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/5/4.jpg

After the KoM the peloton speeds up, slowly cutting down on the distance, it is mainly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Senyenov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Zordan delivering most of the workload.
When the breakaway passes the 2nd sprint, the distance is 5’40” with 45 km to go.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/5/5.jpg

With 30 km left, the sprinter teams take over the pursuit, upping the pace to 55-60 km/hour, it is mainly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Edet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kamyshev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Lietaer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Restrepo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Schorn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Meintjes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Stannard working hard.

The distance is reduced to 3’27” when the breakaway passes under the 20 km banner, peloton now just visible in the background.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/5/6.jpg

14 km left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart attacks from the breakaway, peloton now at 2’05.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/5/7.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart first under the 10 km banner, but his former breakaway companions is just 11” behind him.
Over the last 4 km the peloton haven’t got any closer, it could look like it is the breakaway today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/5/8.jpg

5 km left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart first under the banner, at 15” pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Laporte, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Nych and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Postlberger

3 km left
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Laporte is now side by side with a much slower moving pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart

The 4 remaining breakaway riders at 16”

Peloton at 2’00”

2 km left, they have all just started the sprint
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Laporte leading with 11”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/5/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Laporte first under the red kite, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Postlberger now just 1-2 meters behind him.

Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Zingle moving fast some 4-6 meters further back is still in this.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/5/12.jpg

Yes it is exiting, but let’s take a look at the peloton first.
First under the red kite in this group is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Feiereisen with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero and just a bit further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Lutsyshyn have been leading for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Christophe Laporte wins in Elk Grove

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/5/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Postlberger 2nd in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart 3rd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eue.png Zingle 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/California/5/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Margaliot 5th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Nych 6th as last from the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh wins the peloton sprint as 7th in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero 8th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Reimer 9th andpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Willwohl rounds of top 10.

The transition stage doesn’t change anything Francesco Ginanni still leading in front of Ben Gastauer and Matej Mohoric, all other classifications also unchanged
